Four months ago we picked up a 3 year old yellow lab at a shelter near Denver. The dog is lovable, has had some hunting experience, but was WILD when we got him. It was necessary to keep him tethered at all times, or he was GONE for 20 minutes pursuing some scent in the nearby forest (we back up to public land). I purchased this device in the hopes I could control him. To my surprise I discovered he must have had some time with a similar device. He instantly responded to the Tone/Vibration mode. When he would start to take off, one tap on that mode made him instantly come back. Only if he chased a deer on hikes did I have to "tingle" him a little. He would immediately drop the chase. The 435 X series is really nice and has a small remote control that fits into my hand (I am only 5'4). The XS series is stronger (for large dogs that can be stubborn) and was too much for my need… that's why I really wanted the X series. The 825 X is the same as the 425 X except is has a longer distance reach (1/2 mile) but the remote is a little big bigger. Works great…. make sure you read the manual for the different settings and understand that this is not a training tool per say but a corrective tool (meaning your dog has to know and understand commands BEFORE using it)…Do NOT use as a punitive tool. The nice thing is this item allows you to choose either tone, vibration, or static mode. 99% of the time I only need to use vibration for my dog to get his attention (he cN get sobfocused on a scent that he doesn't pay attention to my commands). He sometimes takes off after a rabbit/wild pig etc. and that's when I have to use the static mode to quickly get his attention away from his chase. I really like that it is waterproof (my dog swims into ponds and rivers)…some other brands claim to be waterproof but really mean to say water resistant! I have tried everything I knew with this dog, built a relationship with him, treats, toys, praise and I wasn’t able to find anything that would motivate him to actually follow the commands that I knew he knew. I was afraid to use a “shock collar” because I thought it was going to be cruel but it had been 5 months where this 3 year old pit was with me and there seemed to be no progress. I really was not able to find something that worked. I was at a loss and willing to try just about anything. I watched some of the training videos on sportdog’s page. I ended up buying this and I charged it up like they said. I then tried it on myself first. I was very surprised, it reminded me of a tens machine that the chiropractor uses, not what I thought it was going to be at all. It’s been 3 days since I started to use this collar (425XS) and he is responding to voice commands now and the “beep” function on the collar. My dogs have never been better. It only takes a couple of shocks to get them to obey commands while in the beginning of training. After the first week, they mostly respond to my voice command but I still use an occasional vibrate to remind them who is in charge. I bought this product about a month ago and it has made a huge difference in obedience, field training, and overall performance of my chocolate lab. He is currently 7 mo. old and this product has truly made a difference so far (obeying commands consistently, etc.). While at the ranch, the 500yd range capability is certainly a plus. I have been having problems with my younger male dog jumping on my old, crippled female dog when I walked them. They always seemed to be just out of my reach when he would jump on her. I worked with him for weeks trying to get him to quit jumping on her and biting her neck. I put the training collar on him and corrected his behavior in two or three days. I had to correct him several times with a stronger correction the first day I put the collar on him. After the first day, he responded quickly to a nick. Now I use the tone to remind him to leave her alone. We finally have a peaceful walk in the wood each morning.51kmiller
Provides great versatility for settings and strengths in order to find the perfect one for both your dog and you. I loved that I could quickly change the level of stimulation on the dial, even in front of the dog, without having to pry the back of the remote open and drawing attention to the device. I do wish that I could change the levels of vibration more but, I can still slowly increase the levels of stimulation. I tried it on my hand between vibration and stimulation and level 1 was higher than I expected but, still appropriate. The positive is that there's a half second small stimulation option that is also included in the vibration and tone setting. You can safely increase to see what your dog responds to (without the dog yelping). Regardless, I was able to go from vibration to a half second small stimulation which would be suitable for a more sensitive dog however; did not phase my more dominant, less sensitive dog and found that I even had to increase the longer lasting stimulation with him in a safe way. If you wish to change modes/settings on this device, you do have to go away from the dog for this but, with the table the book provides, that part was easy. (I did have to use mechanical pencil for this – using buckle adjuster did not work for me). I HIGHLY recommendto NOT use these collars unless you know exactly how to properly use them (by an actual dog trainer). These collars have to be used very precisely with little to no room for error. It seems to be working fine. One feature lacking, which my original model had, is the ability to turn the collar receiver on/off while on the dog (button is on the side of receiver between the two electrodes touching the dogs skin). The on/off button is a bit difficult to activate even when the collar is not on the dog. The tone seems faint, but my dog has no trouble hearing it. Had no way of checking range. I guess they made the collar very stiff for durability, but I have significant difficulty bending it just right to pass the pin of the buckle through the correct hole.numuno

Product initially worked well. Combination of tone, vibration, and shock works well for training. My golden retriever responded well. Unfortunately the second time I went to charge the collar, the connection between the collar and the charger would not make contact. I chatted with cabelas and asked if they could send me a new charger dongle and they said I wanted that option I would need to work directly with Garmin. They gave me the option to return by mail, but I didn't want to be without the collar for that long. Instead I drove to the store to exchange it but they did not have the model available in the store. I returned it at the store and ordered a replacement on line. I bought this collar about a year ago, and it is still just as effective and powerful today. This has all of the capabilities I need for training and enjoying my time with my dog. With the multi-collar functionality, it’s also great for people who own multiple dogs as you would just need a new collar and program it to a different color code switch. We bought this a couple months ago! Best investment we ever made! Our dog doesn't like the neighbours dog and would bark like crazy every time he was out in the yard. put the ecollar on him and only had to use the shock button a couple times and it stopped the bad behaviour in its tracks! Love it! The only thing I noticed was the collar became unpaired from the remote after we took him to the lake to swim. I have always been apprehensive of shock collars, but my dog was back-tracking on her training. She has always behaved very well on a leash, just to forget that training when the leash comes off. In only 2 weeks of use, this collar has worked like a charm! I have only had to shock once- the vibration and beep modes are enough to correct her. Both the collar and remote batteries are still charged after 2 weeks – I haven't had to recharge yet. I had a waterproof beeper before. I learned quickly after drowning it. It is not submersible. Now. I know the difference. And this one is a keeper. I love its freedom. I purchased this collar for a new puppy I am training. I am very pleased to have the Tone/Vibration stimulation before going to shock. I have owned several collars over the years and purchased this to replace a Tri-Tronics XLS. The construction is lightweight, yet durable. Button placement is thoughtful and gives me quick control of the stimulation and beeper. I like the flexible configuration; even though, I had to call SportDog tech support to get it set the way I wanted. (they were very helpful and spent some time with me to understand how I wanted to use the collar before walking me through the setup) I would recommend this collar. It takes some setup, so be ready to read the manual or call for help.LongSage
The e collar portion works great, the audible location beacon is far from what I expected. It was money wasted. The point function is always on, so if the dog stops for 10 seconds it goes off. I called Sportdog and they told me that’s how it’s supposed to be. It’s too bad because as a located it would be great but it is always going off when the dog takes drinks, pauses, and cannot be worn unless full out hunting.Klassch
I am disappointed that the collar receiver (shock/vibrate) portion does not respond to the tone. I thought that there would be tone, vibrate and shock capability of the shock portion of this collar. The tone button only works the beeper which is useless if the beeper is not on the dog. Also upset that the locate function of the beeper does not have the capability to change the tone from the tone that is already in use on the dog. I would like the locate to be able to have a louder tone than the tone beeping on the dog that I already can't hear.johnostrum

I purchased an orange one and a black one. The orange one is fine and works great. The black one is clearly a refurbished piece of garbage. It was nice being able to confirm that because I purchased two (a burden that should not be in any consumer with only one dog). The beeping (during noise only function) is at a significantly lower decimal than the orange one. AND…the stimulation is much weaker. They will not send me a new item. It is not user friendly. The icons for the dog and your location are too small and the contrast on the screen makes it hard to see the little icons in sunny conditions. The collar that came in the box is not bright green as it shows on the box. It is a medium green, harder to see on the dog than the bright green I thought I was getting. I have two dogs and both are on the Stay and Play wireless fence. So far I have replaced the collar strap 3 times in the two months I have had the system. They need the option of a thick collar with solid clasps because while the shock part is great, the collar is a frustrating joke. I bought this collar about a month ago. I was worried that it wouldn't fit my dog because she weighs about 125 lbs and has an incredibly thick neck. The replacement collar fit her with plenty of room to spare and was inexpensive. Before I looked at the PetSafe website I had looked at Walmart, Petco, Petsmart, Amazon, & Tractor supply… I had a hard time finding a 3/4 inch collar long enough to fit her.Jess903
