Excellent opening size for our pet who is 18 lbs. I purchased the Medium opening. Our sliding door is a custom height of 12 FT, not a normal height, so using the extension included with the patio panel still doesn’t reach the top of the sliding door, which of course is not the problem of the manufacturer of this product. We remedied the problem by using and cutting to size a disposable hard foam cooler, fitted with a foam edge window and door sealer in order to eliminate cool and hot air from coming in and out. It’s not perfect, but works for our pet and for our use.Grace
I currently own 2 doggy door slider inserts from a competitor brand. I got this PetSafe insert to replace one of my inserts that is worn out, and I am so glad I did! At first glance you can see that the PetSafe is far superior to my competitor door. Upon quick exploration, I could feel that the PetSafe door was much better quality. The PetSafe door itself is more substantial and heavy duty just off the bat. I like that spring-loaded panel at the top of the door is taller (than my competitor brand) so that it can accommodate more sizes of sliders. I have multiple different heights of sliders at my house so that gives me more options of doors for me to place the insert in. This is beneficial to me when I have a party for example because I can give my dogs indoor/outdoor access to a secluded part of my house when young children are over. The second part I really like is the extra security with the locking panel to close the doggy door. Whereas my competitor version only has a plastic lock that could easily be broken into by potential intruders, the PetSafe has a very secure metal pin lock. Third, I appreciate that this insert has a slight tint to it. My competitor version does not. When I open the doggy door in the early morning in my bedroom I "hook" my curtains around my original slider handle for my dogs to access the door and I go back to sleep. The tinting on this insert is at least some attempt to block out the daylight. Finally, I like that they include some weather striping to help combat some unwanted drafts. Although I would recommend to combo the weather stripping provided with foam weather stripping to really complete the seal. Overall, I highly recommend this PetSafe doggy door insert, their attention to detail is prevalent making their door superior to competitors.MamaBear34
I'm giving it three stars because it is working but for the price, I expected a higher-quality item. In some ways this unit is too thin for my patio door track and is floppy, and in other ways – specifically the attachment brackets and the door "latch" – it is too wide. I had to come up with another way to fix the panel in place, then insert foam tape because it kept flapping when the door was used or the wind blew too hard, and then buy separate security bars for the patio door. Not ideal. And I also plan that I will need to remove it if I leave for an extended period of time, as this thing is a serious security vulnerability in the home's perimeter now…not that most adults don't already fit through an extra large pet door opening. I wish this had a full closure panel – aluminum, hinged. Maybe I should have just made something custom since I can't cut a hole in the wall of my rental house for an electronic security dog door.Julie D

But not together at the same time…let me finish. So I have a wonderful rotund cat but I don't let her out, so no go for her. However, If you have a portable A/C and need a way to expunge the hot air though a sliding glass door, here you go. Just put the robot arm through and you're good. The only other thing I added was weather stripping on both sides, so I'd have some padding between the door and frame. I am in the middle of having a sliding glass door installation, and even though it isn’t quite done (trim work etc.) I was able to pull down the tension part on the PetSafe door and slip it in the track. The tension alone held it securely. I was able to easily slip it back down and take it out when they needed to work more. Obi, my mini schnauzer, was hesitant, but I am taping the flap up and using treats and he runs in and out the open flap. He is a smarty pants, and will get the flap soon. Excellent opening size for our pet who is 18 lbs. I purchased the Medium opening. Our sliding door is a custom height of 12 FT, not a normal height, so using the extension included with the patio panel still doesn’t reach the top of the sliding door, which of course is not the problem of the manufacturer of this product. We remedied the problem by using and cutting to size a disposable hard foam cooler, fitted with a foam edge window and door sealer in order to eliminate cool and hot air from coming in and out. It’s not perfect, but works for our pet and for our use.Grace
I currently own 2 doggy door slider inserts from a competitor brand. I got this PetSafe insert to replace one of my inserts that is worn out, and I am so glad I did! At first glance you can see that the PetSafe is far superior to my competitor door. Upon quick exploration, I could feel that the PetSafe door was much better quality. The PetSafe door itself is more substantial and heavy duty just off the bat. I like that spring-loaded panel at the top of the door is taller (than my competitor brand) so that it can accommodate more sizes of sliders. I have multiple different heights of sliders at my house so that gives me more options of doors for me to place the insert in. This is beneficial to me when I have a party for example because I can give my dogs indoor/outdoor access to a secluded part of my house when young children are over. The second part I really like is the extra security with the locking panel to close the doggy door. Whereas my competitor version only has a plastic lock that could easily be broken into by potential intruders, the PetSafe has a very secure metal pin lock. Third, I appreciate that this insert has a slight tint to it. My competitor version does not. When I open the doggy door in the early morning in my bedroom I "hook" my curtains around my original slider handle for my dogs to access the door and I go back to sleep. The tinting on this insert is at least some attempt to block out the daylight. Finally, I like that they include some weather striping to help combat some unwanted drafts. Although I would recommend to combo the weather stripping provided with foam weather stripping to really complete the seal. I'm giving it three stars because it is working but for the price, I expected a higher-quality item. In some ways this unit is too thin for my patio door track and is floppy, and in other ways – specifically the attachment brackets and the door "latch" – it is too wide. I had to come up with another way to fix the panel in place, then insert foam tape because it kept flapping when the door was used or the wind blew too hard, and then buy separate security bars for the patio door. Not ideal. And I also plan that I will need to remove it if I leave for an extended period of time, as this thing is a serious security vulnerability in the home's perimeter now…not that most adults don't already fit through an extra large pet door opening. I wish this had a full closure panel – aluminum, hinged. Maybe I should have just made something custom since I can't cut a hole in the wall of my rental house for an electronic security dog door.Julie D

Have had this door for 3 years and it's still going strong. was easy to install, but I have to replace the seal strip every year or so. Big enough door for my husky, but not too high for my miniature collie to get through. I have only encountered one problem, the flap is a bit on the loud side. First off, I bought the medium sized door (11×8), which is claimed to be for medium pets weighing up to 35 pounds. There would be no way a pet weighing that much could fit through the door. This size door is more for small pets (cats, which I have that weigh 10 to 15 pounds). So I made the right choice by going bigger. It's the perfect size for them, and they get through the door comfortably. A small door would have been a tight squeeze. I installed this pet door against the patio door that doesn't slide. That was the only way that made sense, and would also provide some form of security. Installing this against the sliding door would not work, would not seal, and would not lock. Buy yourself some extra weather stripping (the soft stuff). The hard weather stripping provided with this door is useless. Be prepared to improvise and buy extra hardware to actually make this door fit securely and work with the patio doors. My extra expenses were $35. All in all, I'd recommend the door, but be prepared to do a fair amount of work to make it fit securely. But still this is not buglar proof. It will be an easy access point for someone to break into your home. I don't see how this, or any pet door, could be made completely secure.Mensa8

It's functional – but takes away a good 4-6 inches in clearance space from the arcadia door. If you don't have a tremendously large arcadia sliding glass door – don't buy this. You're dog will have more room to get through the door than you do. Also, some of the pre-drilled holes weren't machined correctly and were too small for the screws that came with it. We had to drill them out a bit. Nothing huge, but could be very frustrating to someone who isn't handy with a drill/tools. The instructions could use some tweaking as well. The box comes with two (2) different sets of instructions. One looks to be a supplement to the other, and yet they don't cover all of the nuances. There's a third resource (YouTube video) to use as well – but that too doesn't warn you of perils should you attach the top half-backwards. Again, nothing huge and easy to realize/fix – but time consuming nonetheless. It's the little things like that "great" instructions benefit consumers. And the biggest peril – have two people! They show in the video and written manual a (presumed?) average housewife putting the door together. Mind you – this product is TOP HEAVY and mostly GLASS! You should have two people just for sheer safety sake when putting this together. It doesn't take much of a miscalculation to have that thing slide down the wall or forward/backwards if you're not careful. This item is so flimsy that it cannot in any form be regarded as secure. I had to screw it into place because the twist tabs were not strong enough to hold it at the right height. We still didn't think it was strong enough so I bought a melamine panel to replace it. Thought at least I could sell it for $20. Alas no. As I took the screws out, it slid down so fast that the base snapped off.Tessa
First one I bought was faulty out of the box. The locking screws didn’t work. Bunnings replaced it and the second one the flap dropped off on my dogs back after 2 weeks. Awful product. Not worth the cost. Should have just purchased the more expensive version. Flap is tight and difficult for my labradors to fit through, no option to close of the flap if needed to lock the dogs out, the required extension is an additional cost and it doesn't sit flush in the door at all. The door is well made and easy to install. we bought the large bronze. Only problem we have is that we have 3 dogs and one is a pug, other two are big 80lb even though rated for 100lb dogs and I measured them, for out dogs was a little short., I fixed by adding a small block under raising it an inch. but the 4-5' rise really does work for small dog. The XL version may have been better. But only came in white and more expensive. Been a couple weeks now and the bigger dogs are doing great. Pug, we open the slider for him. Overall well made and works well. Just a matter of getting sized right. May not work as well when you have a mix of small and large dogs.RichardJ

I ordered this Ideal Pet Door from Walmart.com to replace the same model Ideal Pet Door originally installed over 10 years ago. Walmart.com had the best price and ordering from their website is convenient with fast shipping. This Ideal Pet Door is the same model with slightly different modifications which makes it a better door than my first one. Removing the old door was very easy to do. Replacing the new door was just as easy. All I needed was a Phillips head screwdriver and my fur~kid supervising me. BTW, The original installation took an hour and was placed into a glass storm door with a solid lower panel. The Pet Door is sturdy and comes with a panel that slides into slots on the inside to block the pet door opening. It can be used when travelling or when you want to keep your pet in or out. It has a magnetic strip on the bottom part of the frame and one on the bottom of the flap which keeps the flap closed. I have never had an unwelcome guest come through the door. The Ideal Pet Door is a great value, construction is flawless and replacement parts are available. It has lasted through years of two rambunctious very bad black labs and I am replacing it by choice. It can be installed in doors, storm doors, sliding patio door inserts and in brick walls. Ideal is well know for their quality pet products and has been in business for decades. Extremely easy to install.* Looks and functions better than expected in an interior door. The screws were a bit long considering the width of the door. I would suggest using shorter screws because they were hard to screw in completely, and I was using a drill to drive the screws! Overall, the door is an excellent value and I would buy another one if needed. I went with a slightly larger door than typically recommended for cats. One reason is that we are expected one cat to grow large. (We think he's a Norwegian forest cat. Before that we guessed Maine Coon.) Also, there are steps immediately on one side of the door, so I figured extra clearance would help. The smaller door would probably work OK for normal sized, fit cats. (*I traced the part that slides through the door, drilled holes where the screw posts fit through, and just cut along those lines with a jig saw. It fit right through perfectly the first time! I had a moment of minor shock when I wasn't sure if I oriented the door properly since the middle screw posts are not centered. I did, but it would have been a correctable mistake.)shuumai

Live in Ohio colder climate and door doesn't flap back into place after our dog goes in and out. The magnet doesn't see strong enough to hold after entry or leaving if there are winding conditions. Great idea but if its windy the door flap will just keep blowing open as its to light to shut during windy conditions, so this leave cold air blowing in for hours if you are at work or sleeping causing higher heating bills. Love the idea but just wont hold in a windy cold environment. The door will have tons of condensation causing water to drip on the indoor floor in the winter months.Alboy
As other reviewers have stated, you will need to fully attach/install this to the door frame for any security. I'm currently using it only for summer, so I take it in/out as needed. When it is in, there is no way to lock or secure your door (unless you do a full install). My pup is a trim 67 lbs and it's a tight fit for her but she has quickly learned that squeezing through means freedom in the backyard! Might be difficult for a chunky/larger dog. Despite the shortcomings, it is perfect as a temporary solution. I do not think it would be a good solution for extreme climates even as a permanent install because it is not a tight fit even with included the weather stripping .ElvisNBama

Had one of these for about ten years and bought a new one. One of our dogs damaged the old one by trying to run in when the panel was inserted to keep him out while a worker was in the house. This broke two of the screws away from the plastic frame. Even though it says aluminum pet door, the only aluminum part is the white door frame. The brown frame around it is plastic as is the wall tunnel. Since we now needed to replace the flaps, it costs just as much to get a whole new one as it did to replace the flaps. Now for the new one – Had it installed for less than a month and spring loaded knob on insert panel is broken (called for free replacement under one year warranty). Door panel flap lengths are adjustable, but don't seem as thick (and durable) as old ones. If this hadn't been a replacement project of an existing one, not sure if I would have decided to install this one or look at other options.AZTom
I am on my 3rd PetSafe door. I started with a smart door but I got tired of constantly changing batteries. I have 4 dogs. I got the double flap door. After about 1.5 years the plastic piece that holds the flaps started to break (little pieces at a time). There is no replacement part for this so I had to purchase a new door. PetSafe did give me a reduced price. Now, I have gorilla tape holding my one remaining flap on this door,since the same part is breaking once again. This part is cheaply made and I feel like you should at least offer a replacement part. Now, I'm facing buying another door…again.Crazydogmom
This is a great dog door for a medium size dog. It is a deluxe unit with dual flaps for maximum weather protection. It also has a slide-in closing door with a secure lock. It looks stylish and it fits (one of our main concerns) through the section of the house that has brick. We had a professional install the unit, unfortunately, it was a little higher on the outside than the dog would have liked (see picture above) which hindered her from going back into the door. I solved this problem by ordering something called the Ten-Eighty Mini Launch Ramp for about $30. It is designed for skate boards and bicycles but it will also work in this application. I needed a little modification to sit flush with the wall and I had it carpeted so the dog wouldn't slip in cold weather. Now the dog goes in and out of the door effortlessly. I hope that this idea helps others in consideration of this great dog door.norman3670

This is my second purchase of this door for my cat. Overall, a decent product. First one, the cover was rather loose, but worked. The second one, the cover was too tight, could NOT get it off, not even by prying all around the flap area and edges. Finally, in frustration, I called Petsafe to see if I'd done something wrong. Was told there have been some complaints, that I could try cutting it off and they are sending me a new cover. Hung up and looking at it thought hm, could pushing on the middle while lifting on the flaps help. Guess what….it snapped right off.Dodi78years
I bought a petsafe pet door fourteen years ago. I live where it gets to a hundred and ten or more in the summer. After seven years the plastic flap warped and so I bought a replacement flap. It has been another seven years and again the flap is warped but they no longer make the replacement flap for the xlarge classic door. I found this at newer version at petco for seventy four bucks and bought a discount gift card so I was able to just replace the whole dog door for sixty two dollars. I figure its good enough and will outlast my dog.cami62
