For YEARS I recommended these to everyone and anyone within ear shot. We breed, raise, train poodles and Bernese mountain dogs. These dogs can be anywhere from 1000-5000 a piece however the pain my family is feeling from this completely avoidable losses no amount can fix. We have not lost just one family member but seven senselessly. It wasn’t till a vet tech advised me in line at our Petco not to buy this product that this was what was making dogs sick! Oversight Subcommittee Report Reveals EPA Failed to Protect Pets, Owners From Dangerous Flea and Tick Collar

Washington, D.C. (June 15, 2022)—Today, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, released a staff report entitled “Seresto Flea and Tick Collars: Examining Why a Product Linked to More than 2,500 Pet Deaths Remains on the Market,” which details the findings of the Subcommittee’s 16-month investigation into the safety of the Seresto flea and tick collar. The report reveals that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under previous administrations was aware of the dangers of the Seresto collar as early as 2015 and failed to take action to protect pets and their owners. Scientific experts, a former EPA official, and pet owners will testify about the dangers of the Seresto collar and the findings of the Subcommittee’s report at a hearing this afternoon.

“It is unacceptable that the EPA has been aware of the Seresto collar’s safety concerns for years and has continued to allow Americans to unknowingly put their pets in danger by using a product they have been led to believe is safe,” said Chairman Krishnamoorthi. “While I am pleased by the EPA’s new commitment to revisit the incident data, I urge the agency to initiate formal Notice of Intent to Cancel proceedings to determine whether the Seresto collar should be removed from the market, including a comprehensive cost-benefit review of its serious risks. Following the Subcommittee’s disturbing findings, I believe the EPA must expand its data collection standards and more strictly follow its scientific review process to ensure that dangerous products are not permitted to stay on the market and threaten the welfare of pets that so many Americans view as family.”

The Seresto flea and tick collar received EPA approval in 2012 and was introduced to the market in 2013. Since then, Bayer—the original brand owner of the collar—and Elanco—which purchased the product in 2020, have sold more than 30 million collars. Pet owners embraced the convenience of the product, which provides 8 months of flea and tick protection for dogs and cats for under $70, and which is widely sold by pet specialty stores, online pet pharmacies, and large online retailers.

The Subcommittee launched its investigation into the collars in March 2021, following the publication of an investigative report which revealed that, as of June 2020, there had been more than 75,000 incidents and approximately 1,700 pet deaths linked to the Seresto collar. Since then, the reported numbers have increased to more than 98,000 incidents and 2,500 pet deaths.

The Subcommittee reviewed emails from the EPA, as well as documents from Bayer and Elanco, that showed the EPA was aware of these incident numbers and the dangers caused by the collar yet failed to act. Documents and communications obtained by the Subcommittee reveal:

EPA Rushed Seresto’s Approval Through a Flawed Scientific Review Process: An EPA Risk Manager wrote in 2016 that the agency “rushed” the Seresto collar’s registration so that the CDC could use the collars in a study. The California Department of Pesticide Regulation found that key studies that tested the Seresto collar on adult dogs and cats were not acceptable because the studies “greatly under-estimated the exposures” to one of the collar’s active ingredients. I bought collars for 2 of my cats, Maggie and Cosmo, as they were being irritated by fleas. Maggie was particularly causing concern as she was getting scabs around her neck and tail end from flea allergy dermatitis. The collars worked *very* quickly, as within a few days I noticed that both cats were scratching less, and I didn't find any fleas when I ran a flea comb through their fur. Until then I'd been at my wit's end, using flea product after flea product on both the cats and my house, to try and get rid of these pesky, and very persistent, unwelcome house guests! A great result, and the collars definitely do work. However – there's one thing I think it's important to know if you're planning to use this collar on your own pet. The nature of the collar design (stepped/ridged on the inside) *can* cause some light abrasions in places around the neck, so for the first few weeks at least I'd recommend routinely checking all round your cat's neck (parting the fur if you can) to make sure there are no irritated areas of skin. After about 4 weeks of use Maggie had a tiny area on her neck that looked like a light graze, and a few slightly scabby-feeling patches of dry skin. I took the collar off for a few days to let her skin recover, then put the collar back on. I'll repeat the process if it happens again. In summary, these collars definitely do work, and I like that I don't have to worry about applying spot-on treatments (which the cats hate). However, I recommend putting the collar on as loosely as you can, so that it's not pressing on your animal's skin too much and potentially irritating it. I received a Hartz® UltraGuard® Flea & Tick Collar for Dogs – White in exchange for a review. I loved the fact that there is enough length in the collar that it would fit multiple size dogs. I put this on my 62 pound Pittie the very first day I received it. I did have a little trouble getting the end through the buckles but luckily, my dog is very patient. I haven’t noticed any adverse effects on his skin nor scratching where the collar is. I do have some very tall grass that he likes to run and play in on a regular basis and I typically use some sort of OTC drops from the store. My dogs go to the groomer for their baths every 6 weeks and I was shocked when they told me my german shepherd had a few fleas on him and the groomer informed me that fleas were bad this year because my dogs have never had fleas., so in a rush, I ordered these flea collars and they seem to work but I also use a spray bottle with 1 cup of apple cider vinegar mixed with 2 cups of water and spray it on my hands then rub my dogs down before they go outside in the mornings first of day then I spray their beds a spritz of it and voila!!!! no more fleas!!!!!! Great flea and tick collar for cats. Collar is a cute light grey color and is much slimmer than other collars I have seen which is really nice since my cat was not a big fan of wearing a collar. The little can the collar comes in has easy to follow instructions as well as these wonderful reflective clips you can add to the collar to hold down the end part if it sticks out too much or if you want to see your sweet kitty goes outdoors and you want to be able to spot them at night (thinking of when they cross a street and a car is coming). The most important though is how really well this collar has worked to keep fleas and ticks off my cat. Within 24hrs my cat had serious relief from the critters that were bothering her and making her scratch herself. I keep seeing the scratching and nibbling so decided to give the collar a try. Within an hour fleas were falling off everywhere they'd sit. I have linoleum and hardwood so I could spot the fleas easily. What made me notice initially was one of the cats sat in my lap and I noticed 5 or 6 dying fleas on me. In our family, we have previously only used these for our dogs and they work amazingly well so we tried one for our cat and the results were better than we expected. i have a 3 month old and a two month old teddy bear…Bichons. They both weigh under 8 pounds. i went to pet smart and purchased 2 seresto flea and tick collars for small dogs, but on the front it says small dogs up to 18lbs. so my question is, could i use them on the puppies or return them and get for smaller dogs, or maybe cats. thanks for your time.Michael S.

These collars are ineffective! I have found multiple attached ticks on my dogs, right next to the collar. I have used Adams Flea and tick products for foster dogs/cats before, and they seemed to work well. So although I prefer not to use poisons, thought I would try on my own dogs after a mild winter and ticks are appearing in this area (Central NH) more and more. Very disappointed. The Adams Flea Tick Collar for Dogs are my go-to tick collars for my four-legged babies!! They really work great and very inexpensive. I bought the Ultra Guard Flea and Tick collar for my two cats. On Wednesday both cats were brought to a professional pet groomer. They came home and were all clean. I put their flea and tick collar on Wednesday evening. My younger cat had no problems. By Saturday our older cat had an allergic response to the collar. All of her skin under the collar was swollen and scabbed. She hadn’t been scratching it. She didn’t have the redness, swelling or scabs any where else on her body.
We treated it like an allergic response and are waiting to see what happens. We trimmed her neck hair, carefully cleaned it, applied an antibiotic ointment with hydrocortisone ointment.Roxann Boysen

I couldn't exactly tag my identical product as it's literally very recently been released.. Overall tho I totally loved this flea collar by Hartz that's absolutely comparable to Soresto! Comes in one size fits all secure dual buckle system that keeps it safely secure for up to 6months of protection! I live in Ohio where fleas ticks are usually only active 4-5 months of the year so that's perfect for my fur babies. It additional offers protection from mosquitoes and prevention of flea eggs from hatching. It offers full body protection as well seems to live up to it's advertising so I'd say 5/5 product from Hartz! The Salvo Flea & Tick Collar for Dogs come is different sizes. The size I received is Small/Medium. It fits necks up to size 20". This is for a dog 11 to 25 pounds. Just cut off whatever you have that is left over. It does not cause a problem. It has a really smooth feel to it. So it is not rough against your dog's neck. It is a thin collar so it is out of the way. It has a triple clasp so the collar will not fall off. That would be a bummer. I would be so upset to buy this and then it falls off. Well, they thought of that for us. Thank goodness. It is an off white color. There are two of them. Use one of them and then six months later put the other one on for the next six months. Can't beat the price for twelve months protection. I didn't know I was getting two collars. I was shocked when I opened it up and found two. But it makes sense. The chemicals can only last so long. By the way, I read up on the active ingredient Deltamethrin and found it to be safe. My dog is my family and I treat him as such. I would not use this product if I didn't feel it weren't safe. My dog's name is Oliver and he is my life. It is up to me to keep him safe and happy as I feel it is up to you. Some dogs are sensitive. If your dog is sensitive then wash him or her with mild soap and lots of water. Wear gloves when you put this on your dog. The collar is waterproof. The collar uses Time Release Technology and works with your dogs natural oils. My Oliver is a Bichon Frise. I have to groom him every two months because his hair grows so fast. I don't know if this is going to keep the collar from doing it's job because of him having to be bathed often. It said it works with the dogs natural oils. I like that this flea and tick collar is affordable and long lasting. Im always surprised at how much these collars cost but I consider them to be a necessity in protecting my min pin. I had first heard of this brand from my neighbor who swears by it. Her energetic dog loves to roll in the grass and root in the brush and is frequently exposed to fleas and ticks. I decided to try it on my little dog and am happy with the results. The first thing I'd like to point out is this product is half of the cost of the leading flea collar. The tin contains 2 collars with each being effective for 6 months so one tin will get your pet a year of protection. The collars are time released so they should be just as effective at the end of their use then in the beginning. Since I recently got these I couldn't say whether that's true of not. One thing to remember with all flea collars is these contain pesticides so it's important to keep an eye on your pet to check for any potential reactions. I noticed when reading other reviews for their opinions that some people were having trouble getting the collar to stay on. On the packaging it states the collar has a proprietary 3 clasp system which I think people don't understand how it works. I took a picture of the underside of the collar to show it has a system of grooves and slots which when pulled through the clasp area with lock the collar in place. It is extremely strong as I tested it pulling very hard and it did not budge. It also has a peel away strip for your dog's comfort. The directions do not say what to do with this so I'm assuming some people aren't pulling it off which they're supposed to. This could be the reason for the collar not staying. on their dogJAD12

DONT BUY. Found a tick on my dog (havent been in the woods prior or anything) and so I bought this as a cheaper alternative to all the other collars and its 11pm and I just pulled off an engorged tick from the sammmme dog in the same spot and it didnt come off right away… it expoded in my grasp and was disgusting and still was stuck on. Smelled like the collar which was funny…not. When I put the collars on both the dogs the collars were dry too not sure if that means anything or not but just saying that was probably not helpful. Our pup has been scratching bald his forehead and behind the ears. Been applying sprays for hotspot and bathed with antibacterial and antifungal shampoo. Nothing works until I put this on. I have left it on for a couple days to monitor the effects, and my dog is still gathering fleas. It may repel some, but it definitely does not repel ALL. The only positive thing I can say is that it smells good. Do not waste your money.Renee

My vet recommended these to me three years ago when I noticed my adopted dog had cresks in her legs when she stood up. Her left leg goes pop from the hip a bit, but it is very slight. I've given her these just about every day for the past three years without incident. I no longer hear regular creeks and I attribute the maintenance to Glycoflex. My vet said that this was the only glucosamine product (except maybe Cosequin) that tests show has the actual amounts of the active ingredient in it. I give the Joint Treats to my puppy for support, but I don't think he needs them. I won't be switching to Joint Treats.2dogsandacat

Our 9mo old puppy was having her back knee caps pop out of place several times a day. Once she started taking the Glyco Flex 1 twice daily, her problems stopped. She has been taking them for about 6 months now and her problem completely stopped. Excellent product!!!Tracey K.

Packaging . No directions how to OPEN 😤 product. As the Dosage package looks like every other product of this type human or canine two different sides one of which looks like has to be peeled off to have the dispenser come out. COULD NOT FIND ANY DIRECTIONS TO THE CONTRARY.🤔 Well trying to peel off white layer the liquid spewed out all over me and the counter.Dorothy Groesbeck
