For YEARS I recommended these to everyone and anyone within ear shot. We breed, raise, train poodles and Bernese mountain dogs. These dogs can be anywhere from 1000-5000 a piece however the pain my family is feeling from this completely avoidable losses no amount can fix. We have not lost just one family member but seven senselessly. It wasn’t till a vet tech advised me in line at our Petco not to buy this product that this was what was making dogs sick! Our puppies and adults all dogs all wore these and experienced vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, spontaneous abortions, chemical burns and the worst death. My family’s heart is broken, it was to the to the point that we were drowning our pets medical bills. The pets in our house receive love in frequent Caresses', Brushings, Gardens for play and Special beds for sleep. Above ALL, they receive New Seresto Collars on Valentine's day each year ! Oversight Subcommittee Report Reveals EPA Failed to Protect Pets, Owners From Dangerous Flea and Tick Collar

Washington, D.C. (June 15, 2022)—Today, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, released a staff report entitled “Seresto Flea and Tick Collars: Examining Why a Product Linked to More than 2,500 Pet Deaths Remains on the Market,” which details the findings of the Subcommittee’s 16-month investigation into the safety of the Seresto flea and tick collar. The report reveals that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under previous administrations was aware of the dangers of the Seresto collar as early as 2015 and failed to take action to protect pets and their owners. Scientific experts, a former EPA official, and pet owners will testify about the dangers of the Seresto collar and the findings of the Subcommittee’s report at a hearing this afternoon.

“It is unacceptable that the EPA has been aware of the Seresto collar’s safety concerns for years and has continued to allow Americans to unknowingly put their pets in danger by using a product they have been led to believe is safe,” said Chairman Krishnamoorthi. “While I am pleased by the EPA’s new commitment to revisit the incident data, I urge the agency to initiate formal Notice of Intent to Cancel proceedings to determine whether the Seresto collar should be removed from the market, including a comprehensive cost-benefit review of its serious risks. Following the Subcommittee’s disturbing findings, I believe the EPA must expand its data collection standards and more strictly follow its scientific review process to ensure that dangerous products are not permitted to stay on the market and threaten the welfare of pets that so many Americans view as family.”

The Seresto flea and tick collar received EPA approval in 2012 and was introduced to the market in 2013. Since then, Bayer—the original brand owner of the collar—and Elanco—which purchased the product in 2020, have sold more than 30 million collars. Pet owners embraced the convenience of the product, which provides 8 months of flea and tick protection for dogs and cats for under $70, and which is widely sold by pet specialty stores, online pet pharmacies, and large online retailers.

The Subcommittee launched its investigation into the collars in March 2021, following the publication of an investigative report which revealed that, as of June 2020, there had been more than 75,000 incidents and approximately 1,700 pet deaths linked to the Seresto collar. Since then, the reported numbers have increased to more than 98,000 incidents and 2,500 pet deaths.

The Subcommittee reviewed emails from the EPA, as well as documents from Bayer and Elanco, that showed the EPA was aware of these incident numbers and the dangers caused by the collar yet failed to act. Documents and communications obtained by the Subcommittee reveal:

EPA Rushed Seresto’s Approval Through a Flawed Scientific Review Process: An EPA Risk Manager wrote in 2016 that the agency “rushed” the Seresto collar’s registration so that the CDC could use the collars in a study. The California Department of Pesticide Regulation found that key studies that tested the Seresto collar on adult dogs and cats were not acceptable because the studies “greatly under-estimated the exposures” to one of the collar’s active ingredients. Great flea and tick collar for cats. Collar is a cute light grey color and is much slimmer than other collars I have seen which is really nice since my cat was not a big fan of wearing a collar. The little can the collar comes in has easy to follow instructions as well as these wonderful reflective clips you can add to the collar to hold down the end part if it sticks out too much or if you want to see your sweet kitty goes outdoors and you want to be able to spot them at night (thinking of when they cross a street and a car is coming). The most important though is how really well this collar has worked to keep fleas and ticks off my cat. Within 24hrs my cat had serious relief from the critters that were bothering her and making her scratch herself. She was so bothered by fleas and/or ticks that she was loosing hair on her lower belly. Now she significantly has decreased her scratching. I haven't seen any fleas on her (and she goes on daily adventures outside). Her lost hair is now growing back as well. I am super happy I bought this collar. I had hesitated because it is pricey but oh is it worth it! I had tried the monthly liquid flea products you place in between the cat's shoulder blades and that was torture as my cat would absolutely hate it and it would cause her to scratch and lick the area I placed the product and she would also lose hair there too. But not with this collar. Not only does she not seemed bothered by it but it has had no negative side effects of hair shedding. * Still an early review Have two inside cats and fleas have been a problem for awhile now. I've been giving flea baths every two weeks and Advantage once a month along with vacuuming furniture. I keep seeing the scratching and nibbling so decided to give the collar a try. Within an hour fleas were falling off everywhere they'd sit. I have linoleum and hardwood so I could spot the fleas easily. What made me notice initially was one of the cats sat in my lap and I noticed 5 or 6 dying fleas on me. They don't scratch their faces anymore and sleeping seems to be better. Bought the Adams flea & tick plus as it came two in a Pkg & we have two small dogs. There was no warning on product that small dogs could suffer side effects more so than larger dogs, I found out online when my baby (the smaller of our two at 11 #'s) started acting very strange. He couldn't be still, yet at bed time he was so tired he would try to lay down & there was involuntary twitching & muscle movement, he couldn't be still. Morning & no difference, so it occurred to us only thing new was the flea collar! Took it off & called my vet. She said long as he hadn't eaten it, he should be ok but to monitor & if he didn't improve he would need pet urgent care. I love my little boy so much! I was in tears, but as day went on he did improve some and that night he was able to sleep right up next to me with some twitching, but not nearly as bad. End of second day, he is much better but I can't imagine the damage done if we hadn't put it together & removed the collar!

I bought collars for 2 of my cats, Maggie and Cosmo, as they were being irritated by fleas. Maggie was particularly causing concern as she was getting scabs around her neck and tail end from flea allergy dermatitis. The collars worked *very* quickly, as within a few days I noticed that both cats were scratching less, and I didn't find any fleas when I ran a flea comb through their fur. Until then I'd been at my wit's end, using flea product after flea product on both the cats and my house, to try and get rid of these pesky, and very persistent, unwelcome house guests! A great result, and the collars definitely do work. However – there's one thing I think it's important to know if you're planning to use this collar on your own pet. The nature of the collar design (stepped/ridged on the inside) *can* cause some light abrasions in places around the neck, so for the first few weeks at least I'd recommend routinely checking all round your cat's neck (parting the fur if you can) to make sure there are no irritated areas of skin. After about 4 weeks of use Maggie had a tiny area on her neck that looked like a light graze, and a few slightly scabby-feeling patches of dry skin. I took the collar off for a few days to let her skin recover, then put the collar back on. I'll repeat the process if it happens again. In summary, these collars definitely do work, and I like that I don't have to worry about applying spot-on treatments (which the cats hate). However, I recommend putting the collar on as loosely as you can, so that it's not pressing on your animal's skin too much and potentially irritating it. I also recommend checking the skin every few days and briefly taking the collar off to let any grazed area heal. If you keep an eye on things your pet should be fine 🙂Christine H

I received the collar and opened it to put on my cat. I immediately noticed the pleasant smell of the collar and how soft and flexible the collar was. It went on with ease and was simple to put on. The purple color was a nice contrast as well. The cat is leaving it alone and when I pick her up that light scent was very nice and not over powering. I highly recommend the color for comfort, style and I really like that the effectiveness is for 7 months. Before using the collar I had a situation were my other pet who is a dog woke up one morning and couldn't walk and was in pain. As it turned out he had contracted lymes disease from a tick. He is doing better but was on medication for a month and a very expensive hospital visit for him. My decision was to get collars that I can trust and be confident in. That is why Hartz was the choice for me. It lasts 7 months and I don't have to worry about any of my animals for the season. With it being so easy to put on and having it last long is a bonus. I put this on my 62 pound Pittie the very first day I received it. I did have a little trouble getting the end through the buckles but luckily, my dog is very patient. I haven’t noticed any adverse effects on his skin nor scratching where the collar is. I do have some very tall grass that he likes to run and play in on a regular basis and I typically use some sort of OTC drops from the store. They both weigh under 8 pounds. i went to pet smart and purchased 2 seresto flea and tick collars for small dogs, but on the front it says small dogs up to 18lbs. so my question is, could i use them on the puppies or return them and get for smaller dogs, or maybe cats. thanks for your time.Michael S.

Ordered 3 of the flea collars. Two of the dogs had no problems. But our 15 lb Shitzu had terrible reaction. Only had the collar on for about 6-8 hours. Restless, anxious, eyes swollen and itching. Immediately removed collar and started giving Benadryl every 6 hours. Washed face and around neck area. That night started whining and shaking head. Finally gave bath with baby shampoo. Learned valuable lesson. Going to research more before putting something on this little fellow.Sweetnanadonna

They last 3 months. It’s 1 collar per package to last 3 month’s. My senior mix breed pit/boxer/springer, is 10 year’s old. Her skin is sensitive to topicals. And I live in the woods. She stays close to home now. And and additional fleas I noticed. Is because I’m getting signs I need to treat my grounds outside my house. I use a granular pesticide in a seed spreader every 6 feet rows (keep away from tree’s). Just before a rain fall, to wash into the ground. And cut my grass first. So my pet’s don’t eat it. I keep this away from my pet’s. After a good rain. Their good to go potty outside. And I don’t have to worry about them bringing in fleas or ticks (twice a year, spring and mid summer). I use a flea & tick spray every couple of weeks. Is good enough. A little on back, and tummy. I rub it in with my hands. Around to spread it out. Then wash hands. Never over use pesticides products on pets. I don’t use flea & tick shampoo except maybe 3 times a year. And don’t use spray with shampoo. That’s too much. One or the other. Then I put back on my flea collar after bath, when dry (best results). I’m in NW Arkansas, in the Ozark’s Mountains.Chichewa

One of my dogs can not tolerate the chemical topical flea and tick treatments. He had terrible, large, scabs on his skin where it was applied. I tried these collars last year on him, and never saw a flea or tick. They have that great powdery scent, so he is able to cuddle with me and not stink me out with that bad chemical smell. Directions for Use: It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling. Remove collar from package, unroll and stretch to activate insecticide generator. Do not use on puppies under 12 weeks old. Do not unroll collar until ready to use. Place the collar around the dog's neck, adjust for proper fit, and buckle in place. The collar must be worn loosely to allow for growth of the dog and to permit the collar to move around the neck. A properly fitted collar is one that, when fastened, will snugly slide over the pet's head. Leave 2 or 3 inches on the collar for extra adjustment and cut off and dispose of the extra length. This collar is intended for use only as an insecticide/IGR generator. The collar will begin to kill fleas, ticks and flea eggs and larvae immediately. Its full protection against harder to kill ticks will be built up within a few days after being placed on the pet. For continuous protection under normal conditions replace the collar every seven months. Under conditions where pets are exposed to severe flea and tick infestations. it may be necessary to replace the collar more frequently. Wetting will not impair the collar's effectiveness or the pet's protection. If the pet goes swimming or is out in the rain it is not necessary to remove the collar. The collar may be worn with a regular collar. Storage and Disposal: Do not contaminate water, food or feed by storage and disposal. Pesticide Storage: Keep this product in its tightly closed original container, when not in use. Store in a cool, dry (preferably locked) area that is inaccessible to children and animals. Pesticide Disposal: If empty: Nonrefillable container. Do not reuse or refill this container. Offer for recycling if available. If partly filled: Call your local solid waste agency for disposal instructions. Never place unused product down any indoor or outdoor drain. Read entire label before each use.

Do not use this product on animals simultaneously or within 30 days before or after treatment with or exposure to cholinesterase inhibiting drugs, pesticides, or chemicals. However, flea and tick collars may be immediately replaced with new collars. First Aid: Contains an organophosphate that inhibits cholinesterase. If Swallowed: Call a Poison Control Center or doctor immediately for treatment advice. Have person sip a glass of water if able to swallow. Do not induce vomiting unless told to do so by a Poison Control Center or doctor. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. If on Skin or Clothing: Take off contaminated clothing. Rinse skin immediately with plenty of water for 15-20 minutes. Call a Poison Control Center or doctor for treatment advice. If in Eyes: Hold eye open and rinse slowly and gently with water for 15-20 minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present, after the first 5 minutes. then continue rinsing eye. Call a Poison Control Center or doctor for treatment advice. Have the product container or label with you when calling a Poison Control Center or doctor, or going for treatment. You may also contact 1-800-275-1414 for emergency medical treatment information, twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week. I received the collar and opened it to put on my cat. I immediately noticed the pleasant smell of the collar and how soft and flexible the collar was. It went on with ease and was simple to put on. The purple color was a nice contrast as well. The cat is leaving it alone and when I pick her up that light scent was very nice and not over powering. I highly recommend the color for comfort, style and I really like that the effectiveness is for 7 months. Before using the collar I had a situation were my other pet who is a dog woke up one morning and couldn't walk and was in pain. As it turned out he had contracted lymes disease from a tick. He is doing better but was on medication for a month and a very expensive hospital visit for him. My decision was to get collars that I can trust and be confident in. That is why Hartz was the choice for me. It lasts 7 months and I don't have to worry about any of my animals for the season. With it being so easy to put on and having it last long is a bonus. They all smell wonderful and you can be at ease knowing they are protected. I love Hartz Ultra Guard for my cats and my dogs! I have received the Hartz ultra guard collar in exchange for my honest opinion. After using it on my cats for awhile I did buy additional ones for my dogs as well. I bought the Ultra Guard Flea and Tick collar for my two cats. On Wednesday both cats were brought to a professional pet groomer. They came home and were all clean. I put their flea and tick collar on Wednesday evening. My younger cat had no problems. By Saturday our older cat had an allergic response to the collar. All of her skin under the collar was swollen and scabbed. She hadn’t been scratching it. She didn’t have the redness, swelling or scabs any where else on her body.
We treated it like an allergic response and are waiting to see what happens. We trimmed her neck hair, carefully cleaned it, applied an antibiotic ointment with hydrocortisone ointment.Roxann Boysen

This is the Hartz Ultra Guard ProMax Flea Tick collar for puppies dogs 12weeks or over that of which I received in exchange for my honest opinion. I couldn't exactly tag my identical product as it's literally very recently been released.. Overall tho I totally loved this flea collar by Hartz that's absolutely comparable to Soresto! Comes in one size fits all secure dual buckle system that keeps it safely secure for up to 6months of protection! I live in Ohio where fleas ticks are usually only active 4-5 months of the year so that's perfect for my fur babies. It additional offers protection from mosquitoes and prevention of flea eggs from hatching. It offers full body protection as well seems to live up to it's advertising so I'd say 5/5 product from Hartz! DO NOT PUT THIS ON YOUR DOGS. Bought 3 for my babies when we moved to an area we were told had problems. They were only on for less than 18 hours when I noticed my babies scratching and whining. When I checked them, my chiweenie and my male shih tzu had raw and bleeding burns where the collar rested!!! My female had reddened areas also. I'm so angry!!😡😡 And these were supposed to stay on for 6 months😡!!! Threw them away immediately and will never try again!!Linda Kershner

My vet recommended these to me three years ago when I noticed my adopted dog had cresks in her legs when she stood up. Her left leg goes pop from the hip a bit, but it is very slight. I've given her these just about every day for the past three years without incident. I no longer hear regular creeks and I attribute the maintenance to Glycoflex. My vet said that this was the only glucosamine product (except maybe Cosequin) that tests show has the actual amounts of the active ingredient in it.
