I had bought this a week ago in store. I'm so happy with the progress my dog has already made using this. He used to bolt out the gate but now hes always right by my side, checking in on me and making sure I'm keeping up with him. I knew about this product for several weeks, but I delayed in getting it. I thought I'd give the puppy a chance with regular training methods (treats, praise, verbal corrections) before I started futzing with a special collar and have to buy it in two sizes. That was really stupid. I wish I would have bought it sooner and spent the money on the two sizes. I got this one in a size Medium and it fits perfectly with just an easy adjustment of the buckle. Our little man is a Labradoodle, now at about 32 lbs and expected to reach a 60-ish weight probably. He is VERY high energy, very strong and very smart, but our little darling is no longer little and I have been finding myself struggling with his 32 lb self pulling on the walks. I cannot imagine when he is full grown, so I decided finally to nip this in the bud and I ordered the gentle leader. It arrived today and I was amazed at how he has NO power to pull AT ALL. I even noticed that in many situations like when he would normally lunge at something, he didn't, maybe that is just from the novelty and will eventually wear off, but for today, it was as if he had a total attitude adjustment. It was like magic. He is none too pleased about the new situation, for sure, but I am pleased as punch. Will take a few days of working with him to get used to it so he stops trying to pull it down with his paws, but even when he was trying he couldn't get it off successfully unless I let off on the tension to the leash altogether which I was able to correct for easily enough. I have an 18 month old standard poodle. I’ve had her since 9 weeks old. She’s full of energy and gets super excited. I’ve trained her well on a typical lead but I was having issues controlling her when she would get excited by people and animals. I have arthritis in my hands and wrists, I have shoulder problems as well. Every time I walked her I’d be in so much pain trying to pull her back. I had high hopes for this collar as my older dog has a chronic condition and we are all very tired of his cone bumping into all of us and the whole house, and so is he. But, despite measuring and it appearing to fit exactly as described in the instructions, he had NO TROUBLE getting to the growth on his underside. Complete waste of time and money. He may as well be wearing a sock. We tightened everything to the point of it being uncomfortable for the dog and still he just reaches around like its nothing. The Bite Not collar slowed my pup down from licking his neutering surgery, but didn’t entirely stop it. He is very flexible, so could wrap himself around to lick. The collars are very well made. I had to use one size larger to control his movements better than the right sized one. We bought two, one for our larger dog. Use the cone of shame in his cage for the night. Oh my goodness! I am just about to purchase a Canny collar from VetnPet after borrowing a friend's to trial. We both have Dobermans, both pull like crazy and consequently we both have sore left shoulders. After 4 walks on the Canny collar my Dobe is a breeze to walk. Before the Canny, my arm was ALWAYS extended whereas now I have NOT had to extend my arm once. It is as if my Dobe is stuck on my left knee. The past 4 walks have been so enjoyable and easy we are walking an extra half to one hour each morning. Cannot believe the difference. Another advantage using a Canny is all the control is from the back of the head/neck and not to the side like some haltis. Nice collar, good quality webbing and buckle. I do not find it as easy as shown to wrap the loose webbing around my dogs neck , when letting my dog run free, only because I find the clips fiddly and have to put my glasses on. In theory it sounds good but I have a persistant pulling springer and it doesn't'work on her like the videos I've watched. She doesn't mind the band across her nose as she has previously worn a halti, although sometimes she manages to get it off. I've looked up about persistent pulling whilst using the canny collar and I'm now trying the long lead and turn method. I feel more in control by holding the head but it doesn't stop pulling instantly . I think with my dog this is going to take time and patience to crack this. I can't say whether I would recommend this collar, as it hasn't worked for me as shown yet.chelle53

Had high hopes and was kind of let down by the overall design. The loop thats used to pull out slack and get the right size for your dogs neck has no way of being flush to the shape of the collar. I want to give these a 5 star but I can’t for a few reasons. Pros and cons below… Pros: – quick shipping – overall quality is great, but what it’s made out of is not good; explained below. Cons: – product has rubbed my chocolate labs neck raw to the point of him having to be put on antibiotics. I’m not sure if it’s what the collar is made of, but it was bad. The collar was on loose, not tight, and my dog has not been in water due to the winter (so it’s not like this has something to do with it). Spent a good amount on this collar to have it end up costing me more for a vet bill. Veterinarian even said it’s likely WHAT the collar is made from is what caused the infection.

I have to admit that I was very impressed with the quality of the Backcountry collar. The material is a thick rubber that is both soft and strong. It doesn't have the sticky feeling most rubber has (especially when wet) so it doesn't pull or rub on the hair. The inside of the collar gets a greasy film that builds up after a while of wearing, however, one of the best things about this collar is how easy it is to clean! Soap and water is all you need and it dries immediately so you don't have to wait to put it back on your pup. It has a durable clip and slides easily when adjusting it to size.Brittany

We've used this collar for a few weeks and have definitely seen improvement. When our 130 lb Asian Shepherd tries to lunge at a passing car we simply put tension on the leash and she stops. We have tried every type of no-pill harness out there, and had given up. When I went to my locally owned pet shop to buy a new collar for my girl, I saw this harness and decided to give it a go. What a difference. She didn’t like it at first, but it only took a couple of days for her to stop pawing at it. Fitting the harness was so easy as is putting on for a walk. It’s very lightweight, and with the additional padding on the nose loop combined with the heat-cut ends of the straps being sewn so that they do not touch her fur means no chafing and no sore spots. I can’t remember exactly what year we would have gotten our first gentle leader, but I’ll always remember the doggo we got it for and what a life changer it was!! He was 120 pounds of pure muscle and we.had.tried.everything. Group training, private training, and all the types of collars I would never use today even if I didn’t have this amazing option (choke, pinch, shock…). Our vet had even recommended having a horse halter made for him. And then a friend suggested a gentle leader. Overnight, we went from dreading the walk and only taking them when the strongest in the family was available, to myself, the kids and even my parents being able to EASILY, with one hand and no strength required, walk this dog who literally dragged me across a soccer field once when I slid on wet grass but didn’t want to let go of his leash. It was probably right around twenty years ago, and sadly Bear has long ago been to the rainbow bridge. But we’ve had a few other large, strong pullers since and thankfully we knew from the beginning how to make walks fun and bearable for everyone. I only wish it hadn’t taken SO long for there to be some collars with a little design and color other than the same solid colors for so many years. And I can’t lie, I sure wish there were more choices than there are. But thankfully the gentle leader is still available. I’ve worried at times when it’s been hard to find at stores in our area – but no matter how many other harnesses I’ve tried (and there have been quite a few – mostly looking to try to raise the fashion game a little or avoid the initial struggle to get it off), nothing has worked like the gentle leader and I always just get another one. This collar is no where near as wide as the photo makes it appear. My dog will have this thing broke in less then a month. Absolutely worthless collar for a large dog. They claim it is for a large dog, but, I guess they never meet my large doge. His current collar is twice as wide and at least twice as thick, is less then 9 months old and he is tearing it. That is why I ordered a new one. NEVER again. I will drive 85 plus miles one way to find a pet smart or other store that has what I need and I will shop and buy in person.larry

I purchased this collar maybe 3 months ago and the buckle now pops open when my dog pulls on his collar, whether it be on his leash when he sees a squirrel or at the vet while they are just holding him into place. My dog is 55lbs and barely pulls on his leash, only when he sees small animals. Not impressed the buckle! I really liked the collar but I would prefer it if the buckle didn't break or if it was more like the belt style.Grace
I purchased this collar or one very similar for my dog last year and it ended up rubbing off his hair on his neck area and leaving an irritated raw patch. As a pet owner I was very concerned sense the collar wasn't very tight at all, I don't want this happening to anyone else's baby. I did reach out to Carhartt to inform them of this defect and they seemed concerned and offered to replace it with a better collar. They ended up not replacing it and continued to give us the run around. We also did send photos in to show how harmful it was. I loved there product but it's super disappointing they don't stand by there word. Carhartt is more expensive then most clothing so it's just frustrating I payed good money For a product that is supposed to be durable and safe. Just don't understand.Stella
Stylish and good-looking collar. Unfortunately, it's not as durable as we had hoped. The buckle/clasp is half plastic and half metal which causes it to fail over time. Ours worked great for a little over a year on our 45 pound hound, and then began to fail if our dog applied tension to it against his leash which would cause it to fall off of him. I knew about this product for several weeks, but I delayed in getting it. I thought I'd give the puppy a chance with regular training methods (treats, praise, verbal corrections) before I started futzing with a special collar and have to buy it in two sizes. That was really stupid. I wish I would have bought it sooner and spent the money on the two sizes. I got this one in a size Medium and it fits perfectly with just an easy adjustment of the buckle. Our little man is a Labradoodle, now at about 32 lbs and expected to reach a 60-ish weight probably. He is VERY high energy, very strong and very smart, but our little darling is no longer little and I have been finding myself struggling with his 32 lb self pulling on the walks. I cannot imagine when he is full grown, so I decided finally to nip this in the bud and I ordered the gentle leader. It arrived today and I was amazed at how he has NO power to pull AT ALL. I even noticed that in many situations like when he would normally lunge at something, he didn't, maybe that is just from the novelty and will eventually wear off, but for today, it was as if he had a total attitude adjustment. It was like magic. He is none too pleased about the new situation, for sure, but I am pleased as punch. Will take a few days of working with him to get used to it so he stops trying to pull it down with his paws, but even when he was trying he couldn't get it off successfully unless I let off on the tension to the leash altogether which I was able to correct for easily enough. Obedience lessons, vibrate collars, halters, treats… but JRTs are very independent minded and unless you spend THOUSANDS on training, forget it.I have disabilities so walking my beloved pups was a challenge most daysMy male is still adjusting. He doesn't like it.However, he will fight a bit but once he puts the one part where the clasp connects to leader and then believes he's walking himself, then he prances down the sidewalk as if he's in control again.Our female is very good with it. You can tell she's not too happy about it, but walks very well now and I don't struggle with them barking ridiculously at bikes, dogs, SQUIRRELS!, etc.She was always running on her halter and now ~I~ WALK my dogs, they don't pull me.I didn't even watch the training DVD.
