There is no safer collar than Premier's Martingale to use on new dogs in our rescue or for dogs going on a transport. I will not ship a dog on any transport without this collar. Traveling is stressful, even going to the vet is stressful for a country dog who finds itself in traffic after a ride in a strange vehicle. Regular collars often slip off the necks and heads of a frantic dog. This collar will not! When I get in new strays who don't have a clue what a collar is I can't risk them getting loose. Again, I depend on this collar for control and for the dog's safety. When I taught dog obedience in the Public sector, the Martingale and the Gentle Leader were the collars I sold to my students and they quickly had their dogs in control and training was swift while the dogs' neck's were protected. I have used the Premier Martingale since 2000. It is my basic collar of choice. Regular collars: I don't feel safe using them.
The functional design of this collar is beyond superior. However, it also has a feature (or lack thereof depending on how you look at it) that is extremely important to me that most people likely don't think about…..the amount of metal that comes in contact with my dog. You see, I live in AZ where the heat is extreme four months a year, even in the shade. When you can't wear sandals or sunglasses with any metal design features, hanging earrings that may brush your neck, and are always conscience of how close your bare leg is to those keys hanging from the ignition…….one thinks twice about what one puts around the beloved pet's neck (and paws). We have used this collar on our dog since we got her over 1 year ago. Today, while she was playing with another dog, the other dog got her jaw stuck in it. As I previously stated I bought two of these harnesses in two different sizes. A small and a medium as I was not sure which would work. The small is a great fit for my 13 lb Shih Tzu. But this is summer and she is shaved down. I am going to use the medium size for winter to go over her sweaters and coats. I rescued a 70 lb lab who is leash-reactive to other dogs. This presented a huge issue as we live in a very dog-friendly complex and we would come across numerous dogs anytime we went out. I use the Black Dog head halter and the Halti brand and they each have their merits. I work with a lot of dogs and use them interchanegably. The Black Dog one is less restrictive and allows the dog to pant (much better for big / anxious dogs especially in summer months) and it's more comfortable and bothers the dog less..the goal being that the dog only feels constructed when they are performing the wrong behaviour (eg leash pulling) but the downside is that if the leash is not connected to the loop, then the dog can chew it and destroy it in three seconds. The halti ones are closer to indestructible when worn , whether a lead is connected or not as they clip to the collar and are more restrictive. Saying that, the restriction limits how far their mouth can open. This again has its pros and cons – good for aggressive dogs as it's almost a partial muzzle – can't do much damage to other dogs when wearing them. If training is completed correctly with a head halter, doing stepping-up / trust building exercises and being very strict on head rubbing / pawing at mouth behaviours, then it's a very useful tool for certain dogs. But the goal of any head halter should be to not need it anymore. You should use it in conjunction with your voice etc so that the dog learns to listen to YOU and not the head halter itself. If you have a very feisty, pushy dog who is all over the place throwing a thousand behaviours out there in ten seconds then yes I recommend this behaviour as a starting tool to teach calm and connect with me. But otherwise Black dog all the way.
I have used the Halti brand for years. I first used one on a German shepherd dog which constantly pulled. It even developed a throat problem. Put it on a Halti and after 15 mins of protest she was great. She also accepted the halti and got excited when she saw it as she knew it was walk time. I now have a English cocker who is exactly the same, after months of trying to get her to walk correctly I fitted a halti and it is instant calmness. I have used cheaper alternatives on my German shepherd but they really do not fit the face of the dog correctly and when the dog pulls it twists their face and it must have been uncomfortable for the dog. But Halti product fits the face of the dog correctly and gives the dog no discomfort so its a good win for everyone including the dog.noxas123
These DO work well, full stop. HOWEVER, considering the ease of knockoff product availability, and probably cheap material using overesas labor, the price is questionable, ESPECIALLY since the metal rings wear through the nylon. It is not as bad with this exact design, but I think Coastal branded Halti headcolars have 2 more metal rings. If you ever have to go through a metal detector, the metal is an issue. BUT the added safety strap to clip to another collar or harness, which includes a metal spring clip is important for when the metal ring cuts through the nose-band. Also check the nose-band often as when the padding rubs away, your dog will get a rub. Again the price could be better and there are fiber-reinforced synthetic hardware alernatives to the metal rings. But, overall this is a good product.onelonecowboy1886

I had high hopes for this collar as my older dog has a chronic condition and we are all very tired of his cone bumping into all of us and the whole house, and so is he. But, despite measuring and it appearing to fit exactly as described in the instructions, he had NO TROUBLE getting to the growth on his underside. Complete waste of time and money. He may as well be wearing a sock. We tightened everything to the point of it being uncomfortable for the dog and still he just reaches around like its nothing. I have to admit that I was very impressed with the quality of the Backcountry collar. The material is a thick rubber that is both soft and strong. It doesn't have the sticky feeling most rubber has (especially when wet) so it doesn't pull or rub on the hair. The inside of the collar gets a greasy film that builds up after a while of wearing, however, one of the best things about this collar is how easy it is to clean! Soap and water is all you need and it dries immediately so you don't have to wait to put it back on your pup. It has a durable clip and slides easily when adjusting it to size.Brittany
this is a different material than any collar that i have ever used. it is a flexible plastic. at first i was dismayed but it sure makes it easier to clean than others that i have had. also, it is very strong. even the buckles and where they are attached. fortunately, my dog isn't a strong puller so i am not sure how strong it would be if he were more aggressive. he weighs 22 1/2 lbs and is poodle/bichon. the small fit perfectly.artc
This silicone collar is rad because it doesn't tatter over time, so it basically still looks brand new even after a couple of months of wear. I’m writing this review after just realizing that I bought this product well over two years ago, and it still looks brand new! My water-loving golden has put this thing through what I can only describe as the world’s best torture test, and it looks the same as the day I bought it. Had high hopes and was kind of let down by the overall design. The loop thats used to pull out slack and get the right size for your dogs neck has no way of being flush to the shape of the collar. I want to give these a 5 star but I can’t for a few reasons. Pros and cons below… Pros: – quick shipping – overall quality is great, but what it’s made out of is not good; explained below. Cons: – product has rubbed my chocolate labs neck raw to the point of him having to be put on antibiotics. I’m not sure if it’s what the collar is made of, but it was bad. The collar was on loose, not tight, and my dog has not been in water due to the winter (so it’s not like this has something to do with it). Spent a good amount on this collar to have it end up costing me more for a vet bill. Veterinarian even said it’s likely WHAT the collar is made from is what caused the infection.

Leashes and collars are high quality and put together really well. We bought the ECO line, and I wondered how soft and pliable they would be. They are better than anything I've ever bought. The clasps and hooks are easy to work which is important with my arthritic hands. I do have a leash chewer, but so far I haven't had to try the guarantee. Showed them to our Agility instructor and she was impressed. I will order more come puppy time.
