I ordered this martingale collar to replace an older one that I had just lost on the beach. I searched for martingales online hoping to be able to find one that functioned as well as the lost one. I had moderate expectations regarding the collar, because it seems, all too often, in today's marketplace merchandise is often only just acceptable. This collar greatly exceeded my expectations! The materials, and craftmanship are exemplary. Due to the quality of the collar, I don't believe it will need replacing for years. I rescued a 70 lb lab who is leash-reactive to other dogs. This presented a huge issue as we live in a very dog-friendly complex and we would come across numerous dogs anytime we went out. After he pulled me down 3 times (injuring my wrist and ribcage) I decided to give this a try. I had no idea if I needed a 1 or 1.5 inch collar but decided to err on the side of the wider one. I've been looking for a collar that can handle my super strong dog for months. I ordered a collar from Amazon and he literally snapped the cheap metal where his leash was hooked. I bought the London Furberry martingale collar for my greyhound Milo. He's partly brindle, partly white so I thought these colors would look good on him. I have a 15lb 15 year old Jack Russell Terrier. This is the only style and brand collar I have used for 13 years! I started with the harness from artful canine but it would come off as my dog's head is smaller than his body. This martingale is perfect! First, the collar that I received is different than what is pictured. Had it not been for the second problem, I would have kept it because it was still an attractive collar. The second problem is that the collar is doubled behind the tag holder and it is NOT adjustable so it is unclear to me what purpose is serves. It doesn't sit flat so it creates a loop which I felt is potentially a safety hazard because my dog could get it caught on something when he is out running around. It should also be noted that this collar does not have a buckle and has to be slipped over the head. The previous collar that I bought from this company had the buckle. It was my fault for not noticing that, but I find having the buckle is much nicer than slipping it over my dog's head. There is no safer collar than Premier's Martingale to use on new dogs in our rescue or for dogs going on a transport. I will not ship a dog on any transport without this collar. Traveling is stressful, even going to the vet is stressful for a country dog who finds itself in traffic after a ride in a strange vehicle. Regular collars often slip off the necks and heads of a frantic dog. This collar will not! When I get in new strays who don't have a clue what a collar is I can't risk them getting loose. Again, I depend on this collar for control and for the dog's safety. When I taught dog obedience in the Public sector, the Martingale and the Gentle Leader were the collars I sold to my students and they quickly had their dogs in control and training was swift while the dogs' neck's were protected. I have used the Premier Martingale since 2000. It is my basic collar of choice. Regular collars: I don't feel safe using them.
The functional design of this collar is beyond superior. However, it also has a feature (or lack thereof depending on how you look at it) that is extremely important to me that most people likely don't think about…..the amount of metal that comes in contact with my dog. You see, I live in AZ where the heat is extreme four months a year, even in the shade. When you can't wear sandals or sunglasses with any metal design features, hanging earrings that may brush your neck, and are always conscience of how close your bare leg is to those keys hanging from the ignition…….one thinks twice about what one puts around the beloved pet's neck (and paws). We have used this collar on our dog since we got her over 1 year ago. Today, while she was playing with another dog, the other dog got her jaw stuck in it. They claim it is for a large dog, but, I guess they never meet my large doge. His current collar is twice as wide and at least twice as thick, is less then 9 months old and he is tearing it. This collar is absolutely adorable. We ordered the collar with a 3/4" width, 10"-14" length, and in the pattern "Lucky". This collar is definitely built to last. It is on the stiffer side in the beginning, so take note if you have a sensitive dog. It wasn't enough to phase our puppy, he absolutely loves the collar. Plus, the pattern looks great on him, especially in time for the holiday! P.S. If you do have a sensitive dog, check out Lupines "Basic Solids" collection. They are super soft and durable as well.
I’ve been using Lupine for years and I love their products. But I really wish a lot of the designs that used to be available in 1 inch width would still be available in that size( Panda land, unicorn micro batch.) It would be pretty cool if such designs would not just be for smaller dogs.
We recently received the unicorn martingale and matching leash. The set is pretty yet durable! I love martingales because my dog is easily startled and I know she cannot back out of it. It’s also great for brushing up on her leash manners. I purchased one collar four years ago, and just recently purchased the same in a different color. The only reason I’m giving a 4 is because the newer collar seems slightly different… cheaper and thinner almost, and the metal clasp is fading in less than six months. We recently started training our two pups–one is 2.5 and the other only 6 months. These collars were recommended by our trainer and they work great! The dogs respond to them, but never seem to be in distress or uncomfortable. Plus, they look very tough evne when their tongues are hanging out! Love this collar. Looks nice and functions perfectly. I'm not too sure about the sizing. I've checked and rechecked, measured and remeasured. It fit my dog's 18" neck too loose and I purchased the small. I'm handy and just removed some stitching and re-stitched it much shorter and it works much better now. Yes, this is a training collar and not a tie out or yard collar like I've heard some folks doing. And yes, I would buy another one!EB
