My dog loves this mat – at first he was a bit stand-offish about it, but soon he went over and laid down on it and it was immediate acceptance. It is a bit slick to the touch, and I think that was what he didn't like at first. We spend a fair amount of time outside on the deck and in the back yard this time of year, and it gets hot out there. I put this pad under a table for some shade and the dog heads for it every time we go out there. I also tested it myself – it is cooling to the touch, and I put it in my living room chair to try out it's ability to deliver on it's claim of being a cooling pad. Normally after a couple of hours watching TV this chair gets very warm, but not this time. It stayed cool and so did I. This works – and your dog will thank you for it.CrashTester
The cooling mat is a good idea, but I think most dogs won't like that it is stiff plastic. I have a boarder collie who gets very hot and loves the coolness of the tile floor. However laying on the hard tile floor is very bad for her joints and makes her stiff. I thought she would definitely go right to the mat as it is cushiony and she seeks out cool places to lay. But she would NOT use it, no matter where I put it (any of her favorite cooler places). The mat is a great idea – it is cushiony and cool, but if your dog is at all finicky, it probably won't like the "plastic-ness" of it. I also noticed after my dog layed on it for a longer period of time it had actually become warm. Last year I saw cooling pads for dogs on Groupon. The price was good. It matched this one! But, I doubted they really worked. I was wrong. They work great! My dog will often get up from where he is lying and go over to lie on his cooling mat, even in winter if the house is too hot for him! Sadly, the gel on those mats didn’t last long. I noticed mostly because my dog started scratching at the mat and moving it around trying to find the cool spot. With the gel gone, so was the nice cooling affect. So, I went looking for another one. When I came across this large mat on sale here on BB&B, I was already sold. The price is terrific, and, as a member, I got even more off. My dog is very happy to have his cool spot back. I ordered a Medium, and I'm pretty sure I got a Large. It's bigger than the Medium size bed, and since it's for my kitten, I'm really hoping he grows into it! I have this exact same bed in a medium size that I purchased years ago, and the foam in that one is a LOT thicker than the foam in the one I received from Groupon. I'm not sure if that's a change in production/quality by Furhaven products, but I do wish the foam was thicker, especially for such a large bed. My kitten seems to like it, so I'm keeping it, even though it's HUGE for him.
My two dogs, who are very particular about laying on blankets and pillows, both gravitated to this bed as soon as I put it out for them. They love the combination of the orthopedic bed with the soft and fuzzy plush covering on it and will stay there for hours, when they used to only curl up on the couch with a blanket with a human. Their immediate satisfaction with the bed was a very pleasant surprise and I cannot stress enough how picky my dogs are about where/what they lay on and how much they love this bed. Found Green Pet Shop looking through another pet site. I was searching for a cooling mat for our senior dog Xena. The cool pet pad has some great reviews so decided to order. I ordered a Medium, and I'm pretty sure I got a Large. It's bigger than the Medium size bed, and since it's for my kitten, I'm really hoping he grows into it! I have this exact same bed in a medium size that I purchased years ago, and the foam in that one is a LOT thicker than the foam in the one I received from Groupon. I'm not sure if that's a change in production/quality by Furhaven products, but I do wish the foam was thicker, especially for such a large bed. My kitten seems to like it, so I'm keeping it, even though it's HUGE for him.
Purchased a replacement cover for an existing bed and a new identical bed and neither cover fits this new bed right. Apparently the foam for the new bed is not sized correctly. The cover is too short to properly fit the bed and keeps it curled up on the ends. Also wish you would ship these in boxes rather than tightly rolled up making it hard to get them to straighten out.Gary S.
My dog loves the bed to lay on – but the cover can't stand up to any sort of "nesting". He's not a dog that digs in general, but with any new bed, he paws a little as he gets settled. There was a small hole in the cover within 2 weeks, which of course was immediately expanded to a huge tear (what dog can resist a hole?) and gouges of the foam. I didn't expect it to hold up to chewing, but I did expect it hold up to normal dog settling in behavior! Wish I had purchased something more robust.SL

In the photo, the bed looks thicker than the real thing. It’s nice and soft and thick enough if we put it on top of her old bed cushion. I haven’t tried to wash it yet, but I think it will be difficult to put the cover back onto the foam pad. What really matters most is that our old Basenji, who is 11 years old, loves it. I have been trying to snag one of these since the temperatures started rising here in Miami. My pup likes what she likes and turns her nose at anything she doesn’t. She loves this mat!! She didn’t need to be trained to use it and happily rolls, rubs, scratches, and sleeps on this. I have put the cooling piece in the freezer but not too long. This large doggie orthopedic sofa bed is the best bed I've bought for my boxer. He loves this bed. The first night of sleeping on this bed was the best night for me…why…because He didn't wake me up until 9am instead of 7:30 am to go out to potty. I believe he had a more comfortable sleep, also because he appeared to have more engery…jumping around like a Jack rabbit, circling around me wagging his tail as to say thankyou. The "cooling" side of the mattress is a lie. I know how cooling mattresses looks like and yours just have the color but not a cooling layer. My dog is very hot in his new bed during hot days and sleeps on the floor. Therefore, I feel cheated for having paid almost $50 for this bed. Also, the cover material is synthetic which naturally created heat and on top of a synthetic sponge creates a really too hot environment for my dog. The material is slippery so my elderly dog can hardly get up. The only reason I gave two stars is that the shape and height are good. Still, sizes you provide are inadequate and not a reflection of dog needs which is strange when Furheaven is in this business. My Yorki is a normal size. Yet, when I bought small which you recommend according to the size and weight chart as well as the sleeping area measurements you provided,he can fit well provided he is all the time in something like a fetus position and he doesn't move much. He cannot stretch or lie down in such a way so as to have at least an inch of space between himself and the sides of the bed. Dogs sometimes sleep in a stretched position and do need some extra space. Dogs also move during the sleep, swirl around, wiggle. So I had to get him a medium size which is really too big for him and the space where we keep it in our apartment but I am happy he has some extra space. Humans don't sleep in beds which are exactly their size. Standard beds even if a twin size have some extra space on all four sides because nobody stays in one position during the night. Why would it be any different for dogs especially when it's known that they sleep most of the time. I don't get it.Zenja B.
We absolutely LOVE this bed!!! It is extremely well made with separate zippered compartments for the bolster and bed padding. This makes it very easy to wash the cover and not the padding. I highly recommend the "Convoluted Orthopedic Foam" Mattress. As we live in California where the weather is warmer, the "Quilted" Cover material has been perfect all year round. This is actually our second bed that we bought. The first bed we bought for our an older dog who was starting to get arthritis and have back issues. We felt this bed greatly reduced his symptoms and made his last years much more comfortable. At a certain point we ordered a replacement cover for the first bed. It was still in such great condition when he passed that we could not get rid of it. Our new puppy found the bed and claimed it as her own. We decided to get a new cover for her along with another bed, so she had one in each room. We got the Medium size originally for a 35 LB older dog.
