This is my third itouchless trash can. I’ve had one for years in my kitchen & I just love it! The battery life is excellent. It works very well & I especially love that while I’m cooking & baking with clean hands, I don’t have to touch the garbage lid to open it. I used to have a trash can with a foot pedal but it always moved & marked up my wall. This one stays put. Just received our iTouchless trash can a couple of days ago and I’m loving it. Since moving into our small 2-bedroom apartment, we’ve been using a small trash can which must be emptied nearly every other day due to it’s size. We originally placed the (old) trash can under the sink in a cabinet, but that entails opening the cabinet door every time to dispose of trash/waste, and many times my hands were full of whatever was being tossed out. Another ‘bad’ thing was, NO LID! Odors we’re a constant nuisance. iTouchless can was packaged well and no damages were observed. Once I got it out of the shipping box I had it put together in about ten (10) minutes. Set-up was so easy. Placed the can in the kitchen where it hardly took up any room adjacent the sink. Now I have a trash can with a lid that opens automatically which is especially convenient when tossing two handfuls of vegetable peelings, and NO odors! I ordered the waste can with wheels which makes it even more convenient. When cleaning the kitchen floor it’s just a matter of easily rolling the can out of the way, which wouldn’t be as simple if we had a model sans wheels. Then one would be required to physically pick up the can to move. Kitchen chores are so much easier now and I would highly recommend this product. I don’t use the batteries I had my own plug ac plug-in that I was able to use which was awesome. I was hoping this would be fun to use for my grandkids however it seems it will take a few teaching sessions for my 4year old grandson as he wants to open the lid like a typical trash can. I really wanted to love this product. But it has some issues that 1) don't seem to sync up with my personal needs, and 2) are serious design flaws.
First, let's talk about capacity. It states that it can accept "five lbs" of food per day, or 4 gallons per week. The weight claim is very misleading, because the hopper has a definite volume constraint, and five pounds of apple cores (for example) is a much smaller volume than five pounds of lettuce.
I tend to have larger batches of things, less frequently. This means I don't have a cup of waste every day, I have 1-1.5 gallons by volume (think 1-1.5 ice cream buckets) at one time, then nothing for several days. The hopper will not hold anywhere near that quantity, so I have to store waste, rotting somewhere in my house, and add bits of it day by day to the composter. It's not ideal.
But that's just my personal needs, and maybe you only generate small quantities every day.
As for the design… The machine is made from a recycled plasticky substance that feels like a styrofoam cooler. The lower tray, where the finished compost drops down into, is slid into the machine, and then a foam "cover" (for lack of a better word) is placed over the opening. This cover is not attached and it just kind of sits in the hole the way the lid of a styrofoam cooler just sits on the top of the cooler. There is no seal, it's not hinged.
When the moist organic material inside the machine is heated, it produces condensation, and gets kind of "steamy" inside. Since there is no seal around this cover, the condensation leaks out. Which I did not discover until about 48 hours after plugging the machine in, where I discovered it was standing in water on my wood floor (thereby damaging the floor).
This is a MAJOR design flaw, and the product cannot be safely used in people's homes without addressing this. If I had realized it was going to do this, I suppose I could have set the machine on a plastic bin lid to "catch" the leakage, which would have prevented damage to my floor, but come on… that should NOT be happening immediately after purchasing a $450 machine.
After I noticed the leakage, I removed the cover, and pulled out the bottom tray. It got stuck that way. I think some mechanical part is preventing the tray from sliding in OR out, so I have an unplugged machine, and a half-filled tray of smelly organic waste jutting out that I can't put back into the machine without fear of ripping the styrofoam-like material it's made out of.
I don't even yet have any finished compost to comment on. I've since moved the machine to the basement, and will try to figure out how to get the tray back in the machine later when I have more time to deal with this mess.Tosche Supply Co.
it took awhile to become accustomed to the composter but now it is smooth sailing. I have yet to use it for dog waste which is the original reason for purchasing it. But now that it is working well I may try adding some to test it out.
