My 3yr old has had his Kong for 6mos. or so… big dog size. He's a 90lb. hound/black lab mix that is a mega chewer and this thing occupies him for hours. I shove a giant milkbone into it – helps if I lay the kong on the counter and flatten it with my left hand and shove the bone in with my right. Takes him a while to crush the bone… then he grabs it by the end & does a little shake so the pieces fall out. That can be a bit messy, but he's good at the crumb-clean up! I also put chunks of cucumbers, stawberries, carrots, etc. in the kong and then freeze it. Non-crushable treats (a PB smear or a folded piece of lunch meat or pet jerky) work well, too… takes him longer to get to those. He knows his "SQUEEZY" by name…and he's not the world's brightest dog, so that's testament to how much he loves this dang toy. I recommend the large one regardless of dogs size. I have a 12 lbs shorkie and I still bought the large you just have to make sure to still feed for the appropriate size of the dog. At first she was very scared to play with it and did not understand that she needed to spin the green portion not just the blue. When I increased the value of the treats (replaces some kibble with Cheerios and small piece of dog treats) and put little drops of Kong PB at the opening to guide her nose it started clicking for her. She now loves to play with it and it takes her some time to get all the food out so she’s entertained for a good while 🙂 I gave it 4 stars because the pieces around the opening are intended to help slow down the treats and kibble but when they’re down to the last bit those piece make it almost impossible for her to get the food out.Sandra SE
If you don't fill it with treats, it's harder for the treats to fall out. Which is the point but my dog got discouraged cause nothing would come out. Either had to roll is hard or shake it around. The middle green part rolls by itself, so if your dogs pushes it around with the holl up nothing will come out. Had the toy for a week and she decided it was to hard and popped the hole part out. I've used the Tug-a-Jug for my 1.5 year lab for the past year, and she loves it! She'll paw at it and fling it around to get her food out. My dog loves this toy–he'll eat his entire meal out of it. It took him a couple days to figure it out the first time, but now that he has a strategy, it's fun to watch him manipulate the rope and carefully tip up the bottle so the kibble comes out. However, I've already gone through two of them, because the rope wears out in a way that makes the toy unusable. To get kibble out, the dog has to pull/push the rope so it's about halfway in, so the knots don't block the entrance. This means that the middle of the rope is constantly rubbed against the neck of the bottle, in addition to getting chewed by the dog. So after a few months of use, the middle of the rope is worn out and much bendier. This makes it extremely difficult to manipulate in such a way that the dog can get kibble out. As much as my dog enjoys it, I can't really justify buying and throwing away so much plastic. I might try to cut the rope out and replace it.JaspersMom384
