Veterinarians recommend reduced protein for dogs with kidney problems. Science Diet makes Prescription Diet Kidney Care that shows protein at 12%. An 8.5 lb. bag costs about $45.00. That is $5.37/lb. It requires a prescription. I bought it from my veterinarian. Science Diet also makes a Veterinary Recommended Adult7+ small bites at 15.5% protein. This is still reduced protein in that most dry dog foods have protein well over 20%. This one costs $37 for a 15 lb. bag. That would be $2.46/lb. It does not require a prescription and costs less than half of the other one. I bought it at Petco. Query: Is it worth buying Kidney Care k/d to have 3.5% less protein in the kibble? We tried to introduce it slowly to our dog in increasing portions over a several days to no avail. I'm sure it's a good product produced for its intended purpose, but Hills need to work on making it more palatable. My dog would eat just about anything, but not this. The pellets are quite oily to touch and have an unpleasant odour. If your dog has kidney disease it's worth a try. Maybe buy from somewhere where they offer a money back guarantee if your pet rejects it.

My 20 y.o. senior cat has had upper respiratory issues since he was 1 year old, but had gotten so chronic and so bad that he has literally had a stuffy nose and sneezing for an entire year straight. For starters: I purchased the LifeGold, Old Friend, DetoxGold, and Spark. My little girl is 13 years young. About a month ago my baby girl Littles was told she had to be taken home and put on “Hospice”. My cat is only 2 and a half and he has been suffering from urinary tract infections/crystals for the past year, which is not as common for male cats. My little Gigi, a Maltese/Silky Terrier mix, turned 13 a couple of months ago. Two weeks ago she suddenly stopped eating and was losing weight rapidly. She was also having trouble swallowing. We went to the vet – bloodwork showed normal except for very elevated white blood cells indicating an infection. The vet also found what felt like a tumor on her thyroid. She was given a shot of antibiotics and sub q fluids, but I was told it was the beginning of the end. I chose not to have the tumor aspirated to find cancer cells as I didn't want to increase her stress. I made the decision that I would not put her through surgeries or heavy treatments at her age; my intention was to try to give her the best quality of life possible and let her go when she was ready. I took Gigi home and started researching. I found Life Gold and read all the reviews, then ordered it with my fingers crossed that what I was reading was authentic. I also got Turkey Tail and Agaricus Blazie mushrooms, both known for their cancer-fighting properties. I purchased them separately, as the "kit" that includes a mushroom mix was too expensive for me at the time, but I will likely purchase it later. I started her on everything within two days of her diagnosis. The first few days I was able to get more food into her – she gained a little weight, but was pretty zonked from the powerful antibiotics. She continued to be a very picky eater – I put eight Live Gold drops on bread, then wrapped the bread in thinly sliced rare beef and was able to get her to take it 2x a day, along with the mushrooms in capsule form. She slowly improved over seven days or so, sleeping a lot, but I was still having to work hard to coax her to eat – roasted chicken with skin and sliced beef were all she would do, but even so, over time she improved by about 80%. Gigi seems to feel better every day and is returning to her old self, but I know that each day is a gift and that things could change quickly at her age. For now she's happy and engaged, barking at squirrels, interested in the world, wagging her tail, alert, and loving, and I'm grateful.

The cat I bought it for isn't crazy for it like the other users comments I read. I have to mix it in real cream and then he will eat/drink some of it. There is always left overs that the others drink also. And, I can't get him to drink it regularly some days he won't touch it. It also doesn't go as far as the other reviewer's said. I bought the small bottle and, if he took it regularly I would have been out in a month. I give him the Azodyl also and being on a fixed income makes me wonder if I can afford both. I was devastated when my sweet kitty was diagnosed with renal failure. My vet told me she only had a few months to live. I did a lot of research and decided to start her on Azodyl and Epakitin at the same time. Normally, I would have tried one first, then added the other if necessary, but I had no time to waste. Within a few months, her kidney function tests were completely back to normal. My vet was totally shocked. Her kidney function remained normal for the next 3-4 years and she continued to take these 2 medications every day. My 15 yr old SIAMESE CAT is in CRF and I am treating him 3 x a wk . with SQ fluids. His phosphate remain very high though his other blood numbers came down . The drug the VET wanted to use was not well tolerated by cats for taste, and side effects , so I was not using it. His recent blood test , 4-8-20 , showed a drop of 2.1 mg in his PHOSPHATE ,which now was NORMAL. I have used this product for several years on my kidney compromised canine with great results However this past year, it has been difficult to get this product still in tablet form, before it disintegrates into a powder. I have purchased it from several retailors and have had to take it back or send it back and get a refund. It doesn't matter what lot number, it has been several different ones. It's not a new fact that there is a quality control issue, as seen in others reviews. The pills turn to powder. I used to order these from Amazon, but had that issue there. I contacted Vetriscience and was told if I ordered directly, the issue would be resolved. 8 bottles later, it's not. My recent order had 4 bottles, all pills in powder form. I received a quick response from customer service, and a replacement order was sent. All of the replacement bottles are powder, and from the same lot number as the first shipment. Why are these bottles still being shipped? When you shake the bottle, it sounds like sand. These can easily be removed from inventory so they are not shipped out. My poor pupper got irritated paws from horrible ginko berries smashed all over the fall ground and then made them worse by licking. They were so red and I felt so bad. This product is on the shelf next to a dozen others that claim to do the same thing, but I didn't get to it until three others didn't get the job done. This showed visible improvement within a day. My senior cat was diagnosed with Hypokalemia . Low potassium . He was put on this supplement and within 4 to 5 days, his appetite improved and his activity level. It's made a huge difference, and he is back to normal running around and grooming himself. He will be on this for the remaining years he has left. I suspect that this is a good, effective supplement for potassium in cats. My vet recommended it and said to just squirt it on a finger and wipe on the roof of the cats mouth so he had to swallow it. For some reason, the manufacturer made this smell (and I assume taste) like maple syrup. Sammi foams at the mouth and drools after I give it to him. Why not make it taste like something cats like…fish, or liver, or chicken, or even shrimp or beef? My dog went into kidney failure at 8 1/2. Not sure what caused it, It could have been from a tick bite or he may have eaten something. He spent two nights in the emergency hospital on IV fluids. We tried every commercial diet available to help calm her GI tract. We prepared home cooked meals but knew something was missing. Our wholistic veterinarian shared that one of the commercial diets we used was made from chicken feathers and she recommended Dr. Harvey's. We switched to Dr. Harvey's Canine Health base mix. Dr. Harvey's team coached us in preparation and portions which was especially important to precisely control protein and protect aging kidneys. Dr. Harvey reviewed lab work and recommended Kidney Health supplement. Lollie's heath has greatly improved, her GI issues have resolved, her labs even got better showing improved kidney values. Full disclosure: 1.) I'm not a vet, and this is purely allegorical. 2.) We still don't know if my dog's kidney panel levels are improving. We will be scheduling an appointment soon. But with all of that out of the way, let me just say that I was at a low point in terms of hope for my 13-year old Pit mix. Diagnosed with chronic renal failure several years ago, she was placed on medication and a special (expensive!) canned food diet. She didn't mind it at first but over the years, started eating less and less. Even adding carby goodness in the form of rice and sweet potatoes or extra flavoring like low-sodium chicken broth became insufficient to entice her to eat. I was barely getting a can a day into her. She started at a 55 lbs and dropped below 40 in a relatively short time. She looked emaciated. Legs became week and wobbly. She had tremors and was pouting virtually 24/7. She was the most miserable she's been in our 13 years together. I was sure we were nearing the end. But in searching for solutions online, I ran across Dr Harvey's Canine Health (and subsequently the Kidney Health Supplement). I read all the reviews and decided it was worth a shot. About a month in, we've almost gotten through her first 10-lb bag and she's still begging for her food at every meal. I feel like I have my puppy back. She's started to put a little healthy weight back on and just seems to have so much more energy. We've cycled through chicken, steak, boiled egg whites, and salmon as the protein add-ons – making sure to keep an eye out for high phosphorous levels – and my dog is drooling at her bowl waiting for me to load it up at every meal. After years of desperately trying to get her to eat, I'm not sure I can express the weight that lifted off of me as this became (and continues to be) our daily routine! Again, I'll add this big caveat: I don't know yet if all of this is really helping stabilize her kidney issues. I'll come back to add to this review when we have that information. And I don't even know if my vet would condone this diet change (though we have had conversations about the balance between keeping her happy in her later years vs. following a strict medical regimen). What I do know is my dog was wasting away on a prescription diet and I had to make a call as a parent to make her remaining years happy and filled with yummy meals. That's my experience. I think it falls in line with the vast majority of other reviewers. If I had it to do all over again, I'd start with this type of diet from day one. I can identify everything in the bag just by looking at it. There's no mystery about what my girl is eating. That's worth the world to me. Added bonus, for what it's worth: Dr Harvey's food actually smells good. The prescription food cans were really unpleasant to deal with. My wife is smell-sensitive and didn't want them anywhere near our kitchen or people food. But she has actually commented that Canine Health smells like something she would eat for breakfast!
