I have been using these large Permate dog houses to house my Nigerian Dwarf goats for many years. They have made "affordable housing" for my goats. I will say that my bucks (boys) are much harder on the houses than the does (girls). Both genders jump on top, but the bucks crack the rain shield by jumping on top of the houses. This happens after a while, not right away. I don't blame the company that makes these because they are intended for dogs, not goats that love to climb! I do wish the tops would be stronger to prevent this problem from happening. Another area to improve design would be for the top to somehow lock on to the base. When my Great Pyrenees (GP) dog goes inside to lay down, the lid can lift/tilt off. The large size is not big enough for a GP. The price keeps going up, and I'm not pleased with having to pay more. I wait until the neighbor club coupon comes out to buy any needed replacement houses. Over the years I've bought countless Permate Large dog houses, so I know these pretty well! Looks very nice and hardy but it floods when it rains, I don't know how but the water gets inside and it is too much water. I put a crate pad inside for my outdoor cat to stay warm and went to check on my cat a few hours later after it rained, and the pad was soaking wet not to mention the house was full of water more water than what was outside . The dog house comes in two parts – top and bottom. They do not snap together; the top merely sits on the bottom. No hardware is provided to attach the two and even if there was there are no holes through which one would thread screws or bolts (or whatever) to keep the dog house together. I use these for my goats because these houses are inexpensive but the goats knowingly and regularly have fun pushing up on the exit/entrance hole to "break" the house into two pieces. Yes, I laugh at their antics but I still plan to drill holes and use nuts/bolts to keep the top and bottom together.L McGaffey

It's not extra large, that's for sure. It's a large. My two Berner males at 94-lbs and 120-lbs don't go in because they can barely turn around in it. Nor my 88-lb Pyrenees. The material itself is great. But isn't the point that the dog can get in/out of it so they use it? My smaller 72-lb female uses her Ex-Lg. So is it really the size a medium dog should use? I own 6 of these quality XL dog houses for my Great Pyrenees dog, as well as, my pygmy goats. My goats actually prefer them to there fully enclosed barn. MINNESOTA Winter or Summer, they love to cuddle sometimes 2-3 per igloo. I have never needed to use the flap doors. I think the ventilation is more important. As a bonus they are a great climbing structure, even my guardian dog can be found balancing on top to get a better view of potential predators in the distance. One temporary drawback is the base can be difficult to disassemble from the top, for the first few cleanings. But a large screw drivers works well to pry them apart and they "break in" quite quickly. I got this recently on a great sale price… it was half the cost of another dog house that I bought (and returned). The one I ended up returning was designed as an actual house, but cost $100 and the plastic was very flimsy… I felt it wasn't worth the price, and my dog never liked it. I looked online and saw this "dog house" (it's really a crate, IMO); and Petco had the least expensive price, at half the retail cost. I was also able to pick it up the same day at a local store, and received a further discount for picking it up at the store. There's only 2 pieces (a top and a bottom), and the top basically just sits on the bottom, with tabs that are supposed to hold it in place. It's not the most secure, but I don't see this being blown across the yard or anything. The plastic is heavy duty and sturdy… I mean sure, if you live in a tornado or hurricane area, then of course, yes, it'll get toss across the neighborhood; but otherwise, it should stay in place. Great for when you need to leave your pet outside for a while. It's very wide, but not very long though. My dog can curl up in here and he can fit, but he can not stretch out or lay out in this… which is fine, because dogs usually like sleeping curled up and they like snug fitting enclosures to sleep in. My standard size labradoodle fits into it. He uses it to sleep in. This is not something he can stand straight up in or something he can stretch out in… but for sleeping, he loves to curl up in it. Got these doghouses as an outdoor reprieve from the elements for our 2 Huskies. They are very sturdy and made of solid hard plastic. They've managed to remain dry inside even in a couple of downpours and driving rain. The only time that wasn't the case is when I had one on an uneven patch of grass. So you definitely want to place it on a platform if there's no flat surface. My guinea pigs enjoy climbing on top of this hidey. I have three male piggies- as they got older, I had to eventually cut another opening on the side of this hidey due to boar dominance issues during the teenage hormonal months. Given that it was plastic, cutting another opening on the side was easy. This product is easy to clean with a quick rinse. Recently, I’ve been designing their cage with only wooden houses and items, but they always prefer this plastic hidey instead of the elaborate and expensive items. The general idea of this product is great! A hideaway and a platform? Awesome! But then after I purchased this for my guinea she would go look in it and step right out. She wouldn’t lay in it. She wouldn’t sleep in it. I felt horrible so I had to exchange it for one of the little barn looking ones. The steps took away from the amount of space inside the hideaway. She tried to walk up the steps and slipped and avoided them after that. As I said, the idea is great. But the actual product needs improvement, at least from my viewpoint. This tent is easy to set up (didn't even need the directions) and super roomy. There is plenty of room to stand up, a benefit in buggy or rainy environments. In its first week of use, it survived a big wind storm, hail, and a lightning storm. It weathered all three spectacularly – as did the people inside! We stayed dry and protected with no problem. The crate had obviously been used and returned. The metal was rusted in places and the plastic bottom tray was dirty. When I decided to return it, It was a challenge to get it back in the box. When I took it back to the store, I asked about a discount and received 15% off (the tax). I had previously bought one that was marked down by 50% because the box was damaged. I was quite disappointed in the whole experience. Apparently the merchandise was supposed to be checked if the box was damaged and that wasn’t done in this case.Janice
I've owned dogs for the last 40 years. I've used MidWest wire crates for my last 4 dogs. This iCrate didn't disappoint. It's sturdy and and easy to put up and take down. I use them when I travel with my dogs too. My dogs only use their crates for sleeping in at night or napping in during the day. During the day, their crate doors are left open. I close the dogs in at night. I don't have an issue with my dogs trying to escape from their crates, so I can't speak to whether or not this would be sturdy enough for a dog that's determined to get out of their crate. These crates are more than sturdy enough for my miniature Schnauzer, Havanese, and Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. All three of my dogs love their MidWest iCrates, as did my previous dog! They go in them voluntarily and when told to "crate up". My only concern with the current crate I ordered is that that one of the latches isn't lined up quite right so it's a bit tight when closing the crate door. He was a Parvo pup and barely survived, so rest and his own quiet space was highly recommended for recovery. We first used the divider which was great. However, as he grew, so did his strength. It definitely is not strong enough for large dogs. Even for short amounts of time. At the moment he is 6 months and 60 pounds. Thankfully he did not get out nor hurt himself! I had been rigging my dogs summer tent to shelter my stray cat..I fed her, so she’s mine lol…but it just wasn’t cutting it anymore and it is oddly cold this winter here in Alabama. I added a heavy layer of straw, some fleece blankets and she moved right on in! I feel better knowing she is safe, warm, well fed & happy! DO NOT BUY!!! Our puppy was sleeping in her kennel when she woke up whining in pain. Come to find out one of the wires were loose and she got it stabbed through her paw pad. I’m beyond mad at this point. Highly don’t recommend. If you already own it make sure to check all wires are properly welded to the kennel. You can barely see some blood on her fur and she won’t let me look at it more. Thankfully we just happen to have a vet appointment today. There are so many issues with these crates I don’t even know where to begin. We didn’t just get one and have it malfunction, every single crate is horrible. We have 6 currently and they are all destroyed in one way or another. First off is the metal, it breaks so easily!! My dog broke off a metal bar up top, my sisters dog has ripped off multiple bars, one bar broke and pierced right through her paw pad, she ripped off another bar on the door and ripped one off the bottom. And the bottom part of the crate is horrible!! It looks sturdy but in reality it’s this incredibly flimsy plastic material that is easily ripped apart so now our dogs don’t have bottoms for their crates🤦🏻♀️ Our dogs are also no older than a year, 4 of them still being puppies with the youngest being 6 months and they managed too easily destroy these crates. Another issue we have is they do not stay up! They are collapsible crates and two of our puppies have learned how too collapse the back of the crate and escape so we’ve now had too tie them off. Overall these crates are horrible, highly dangerous and a complete waste of money.Justine Farnan
This cage came bent up like something heavy was sitting on it. Also the bottom lock on the cage looks stretched out. For $78 this cage seems extremely flimsy. I wish I would’ve went with a plastic crate instead. This was definitely not worth $78 . However customer service said the store will contact me tomorrow to deliver a non damaged cage and pick up this one. When someone is customer service gives their word, from my experience with walmart they do not follow through. Then when you call back the next person has no idea what you’re talking about and apologizes that you have misinformation. I hope they come tomorrow like I was advised. However I would return this cage for a crate instead. The quality sucks. I should’ve went to unleashed or petco or ordered from Amazon. Instead I was being cheap at Walmart so I guess this is my fault and you get what you pay for….sort of anyway….Tiffany

We just got ours 2 days ago. It was deklivered by UPS during the aftermath of hurricane Ida. The UPS man needed help unloading it and when I actually got it out of the weather I noticed the box was damaged. Got the wife to come and take pictures of the damage as I unpacked it. It wasn't actually too bad except for the roof being cracked, but not beyond what I can possibly repair. Multiple places there are either screws lost or obvious cracks in the material. I will repair it as well as I can and then trrow a few coats of Epoxy paint on and IN it to protect the wood. The kennal itself was in stock and went together easily. As my pups will be spending only a few hours in it I decided to keep it and repair it. I know there are at leaast 10 screws and bolts missing because the hardware packet was partially opened and some parts had obviously fallen out of the shipping container.Bogey1
I give five stars because for the price I believe it is a nice dog house. Steel framing seems sturdy and it comes with a composite floor that will not rot. I found it easy to put together, but I could see how others may not think it is easy. Parts labeled very well and squared up well on assembly. I recommend putting together on flat concrete and only move after installing after all self tapping srews are in place. Only negative thing I would have to say is that the walls are a little thin for my liking. I feel they could be a little thicker. Also i like how it attaches to the retriever kennel. This dog house is a huge waste of money. I plan on returning mine today. First off, the wooden panels are paper thin and the floor will bow under little weight. I'm actually afraid my dog would chew out of the house very quickly. There were some parts of the instructions that didn't say which way smaller parts should be facing, and you would go through all the trouble to put it together then find out that one small part had to be flipped, but the instructions were not clear about some parts. I rebuilt this dog house probably 5 times because parts just didn't fit well at all for some reason. Oh and you DO need a drill because part of it want's you to drill screws through the metal frame because for some reason the holes were not included in the frames? The metal frame is cheap and easily bends under little weight. The only reason I even got this doghouse is because I have the retriever kennel that goes with it. Do yourself a favor and get a better quality dog house or build a good one yourself.James009

This thing is so annoying. I purchased it for my daughter this morning (in store for $5 more, ugh) and have had to put that freaking door back on about 50 times already. You look at it funny and it falls off. The slide doesn't connect well, it's always falling off. You put your dog through the front door and it's wedged against the stairs. I’ve had two of this exact model before (but blue) and enjoyed it, but I passed them to a rescue adoption family. (The kittens were trained with them so it seemed fitting). I automatically repurchased the same because they lasted 8 years already and still looked great. They’re well built but the handle is on the top door, press fit onto the wire. Therefore it flexes with heavier pets. You can’t move the handle elsewhere because then it wouldn’t be central for carrying and then it doesn’t lay flat so they can’t be stacked well for storage & transit. Lastly, the measurements are of the outer dimension. So if you look at the bubble-shape design in the photo, you can see the pet’s floor space is a little less than the overall outer dimension. That’s cozy for smaller pets and really helps it stay centered in a forward faced position (buckled-in) on car seat cushions. Unfortunately, my 12 year old fat cat is too big to lay out and turn around in the size I got. I returned it with no problems and will switch to a carrier with more cubical or straight upright wall design so my pet can make use of more of the whole dimension it takes up. These also have no quick releases, so when you put it together (top bolts onto bottom), it isn’t meant to be taken apart between trips. That’s okay for ready stored carriers, but I’d like to use one that makes an open bed when not on the move, and stacks tiny for storage otherwise. This carrier is also not rated for air travel, if that’s what you need. However if none of these little issues apply to you, I can definitely recommend this as I had two for over 8 years and they still look pretty new. They fit the cheap standard washable fuzzy beds from Menards and are very easy to clean & disinfect as well. (Don’t use bleach or alcohol on plastics. Use quaternary ammonium compounds for viruses and bacteria, or peroxide for pet parasites with cysts, like CDC says. Bleach and alcohol can etch plastics, making them fragile or brittle, and making surfaces more receptive to harboring various pathogens over time).
We where having a hard time getting our cat into our old kennel with just the front door, he does not like going into the kennel but we had to move and he had to go with us. This kennel with the top door worked perfect. This kennel is made very well and sturdy, my old kennel had clips holding it together that broke and fell off, this one has big screws that you hand tighten that look like they will last a while. It's not extra large, that's for sure. It's a large. My two Berner males at 94-lbs and 120-lbs don't go in because they can barely turn around in it. Nor my 88-lb Pyrenees. The material itself is great. But isn't the point that the dog can get in/out of it so they use it? My smaller 72-lb female uses her Ex-Lg. So is it really the size a medium dog should use? I own 6 of these quality XL dog houses for my Great Pyrenees dog, as well as, my pygmy goats. My goats actually prefer them to there fully enclosed barn. MINNESOTA Winter or Summer, they love to cuddle sometimes 2-3 per igloo. I have never needed to use the flap doors. I think the ventilation is more important. As a bonus they are a great climbing structure, even my guardian dog can be found balancing on top to get a better view of potential predators in the distance. One temporary drawback is the base can be difficult to disassemble from the top, for the first few cleanings. But a large screw drivers works well to pry them apart and they "break in" quite quickly. As my herd grows, I will keep adding these amazing shelters. Thanks Petmate!
I use these for my nigerian dwarf and lamancha goats…. In addition to our barn, as additional cover and housing. The little ones got breat but so do the full soze 3 year old lamanchas. I bought this 42” crate for an English Cream Golden Retriever puppy that we brought home at 8 weeks old. First night in our home, she went right in the crate and laid down. So for young puppies or small dogs, use the divider until the puppy is crate trained and/or needs more space. Ours is now almost 6 months old and still has never had an accident in her crate. I only used the divider for about two months because my puppy got big, very quickly. This crate is so easy to set up, collapse and take with you on a trip. It’s kind of heavy as all crates are but very manageable and so worth it. You can’t beat this price either! It is well made, affordable, has two doors to choose from depending on how you have it set up. I purchased a crate cover which creates a den like special place for my dog when we leave the house now while we sleep overnight. I also purchased basic crate beds, which are machine washable, light weight and durable. I would buy again and highly recommend this crate for crate training.AC
This dog crate is great! It’s sturdy but not too heavy. That’s important for me because of taking my Sassy girl around with me for traveling and vet appointments. If I put the empty cage in our truck, she’ll jump right in there. There is plenty of room for her to move around and get comfortable. It’s nice that it has the divider. She’s already house trained but it would have been handy for that purpose. My daughter has a mid sized Rottweiler that we can use the divider for too. They get along really well but it’ll give them their own areas if needed. I like the latch system. It makes it really hard to not latch it correctly which means less escaping. Then to open it you just have to lift and slide. I love the.two door feature. It gives you twice the options if you have to put it against a wall or walls.Onebusymama
This dog crate was a complete lifesaver at the holidays! My sister brought her two large dogs to my mom's for Christmas and they are about 50 pounds each and both fit comfortably in this at different times to calm them down. It literally sets up from the box to a working crate within minutes. It is sturdy and comes with a divider inside if you need to keep two animals separate or comes right out if you don't need it.
