Dog Fire Escape Harness For Sale (2024 Update)

As I previously stated I bought two of these harnesses in two different sizes. A small and a medium as I was not sure which would work. The small is a great fit for my 13 lb Shih Tzu. But this is summer and she is shaved down. I am going to use the medium size for winter to go over her sweaters and coats. She is also is not shaved down for colder weather so I tend to buy larger sizes for the colder seasons. Besides the price was great.Marlene D

This is the best harness I have ever had for my lil shih tzu/yorkie mix. The only thing is he does not like me having to put his legs thru it and does not like anything being put over his head other than that its awesome! Absolutely love it! I purchased this for my 6 month old, 26lb rescue pup a few weeks ago to replace a different brand she outgrew. She loved her new harness and I admit that it appeared to be very comfortable. However, she pulled while we were walking yesterday and the straps snapped. She ran into the street, but thankfully no vehicles were nearby. The straps are flimsy and will not stand up to a quick pull. My pup is very petite, and I still can't believe how easily the straps ripped. I can't recommend this at all. I've just purchased a new secure, double stitched reinforced harness that also has metal rings instead of the plastic on the Gooby.Katie Ge

We originally had a size small when Missie was heavier. Now that she’s a proper weight we needed the XS because she could slip out of the small. We wanted to stay with this one and couldn’t find anything we liked better, we didn’t want any straps rubbing on her skin. The XS is perfect! I've had this harness for maybe 4 months now and at first I loved it, besides the plastic loops…they make me nervous that they're going to snap because my dog is a puller. On our normal walks this harness has been fine because my dog does pull so she is almost always in front of me. Today we went to the park and she wrapped the leash around a pole and was able to very easily pull her way out of it. Thankfully there were no other dogs around and I was able to catch her within a few minutes but my dog is dog reactive so this would have been an absolute disaster if there were other dogs around. Very disappointed because now I have to buy another harness to prevent this for the future.Samg1015

I was so excited to receive the harness – it seemed like a huge upgrade from the old one I bought from Tractor Supply that my dog was using. Well. It took twice as long as expected to arrive which is ridiculous when I paid for shipping. The shipping fees were refunded, but I had purchased the item with the intent to use it by a specific date which didn’t happen since it didn’t arrive until MUCH later. When it finally did show up the package was ripped almost completely open and the packaging of the product was all messed up which is also ridiculous. Alright it’s here, looks like **** but it’s here. It’s a much brighter blue than I expected which I like. It took a little while to figure out how to adjust as the ends were so firmly tucked into the harness I thought I was going to break it. Finally got it on and adjusted and “Meh”. It’s not deep enough (front to back) in my opinion, and my dog is not an odd or unusual shape. I do like that it covers less surface area, she appears to stay cooler (but a double coated black dog in the humid Midwest is always hot). It does sag when wet (which is almost always as she swims regularly) BUT it dries and goes back to the original fit which is a pro I guess. I say I guess because I didn’t expect a harness I paid over $80 to sag at all when wet but ‍♀ It doesn’t show any wear yet which it shouldn’t for only having it 2 weeks. It does shift like crazy. Not as bad as the cheap tractor supply one, but again I expected ZERO shifting from the $80+ harness. Honestly I probably won’t buy again. I was super excited to find a harness with everything I wanted: reflectors (which the ones on this harness ****, seriously for $80 y’all couldn’t put reflective piping on all edges?!), a handle on the back, bright blue, goes over the head/ NOT a step through and had a back leash clip. But honestly I’m pretty disappointed. There is a lot of room for improvement in what I consider an expensive harness (more reflective piping, padding under the middle set of buckles, better fit, better choice of shipping carriers). I’m not going to get rid of it and it does fit better than the Tractor Supply but I don’t absolutely love it like I hoped.Seva P.

My girl discovered early on that she can back out of her harness in a heartbeat. She can't back out of the Flagline harness (yay!) and – more importantly – if needed, I can pull on the leash / harness without fear of hurting her. (There have been a couple times when we've encountered dogs who are too friendly — having the Flagline harness on my girl made it much easier to pull her back to a safe distance without fear of hurting her or having the harness pop off at a bad time.) The harness is easy to put on / take off. It's strong. The reflective trim helps make her more visible. The adjustable straps make it easy to size up during the winter time when she's got winter coat(s) to accommodate. Having clips for closure is so much nicer than harnesses with velcro closures. (Velcro closure doesn't last long – and trying to wash anything with velcro – oy veh!) The price was a little more than I thought I'd spend for a harness – but having a harness I can trust and that will last is worth every penny. 100% recommend!Karen G.

The harness is super adjustable and fits my pups barrel chest so well! We wanted the waist clip as the single rib clip always slipped off or got loose and it wasn’t enough security for us. We also really love the handles! The front loop works super well to mitigate some pulling (pups only 8 months old) and my favorite feature is the inner material that rests on his body, it’s not mesh or fabric that his short coat sticks into so his hair isn’t being rubbed off or sticking in the harness getting stuck in cracks and making it itchy or difficult to clean. This harness is also super easy to wash and I really love the hardy materials on this harness. Wish it came in orange but the grey works just as well on our pup! This harness just fits Róka so well and I’m so pleased with it!!!! It fits and contours to his whole body and moves with him when he’s moving around! I bought this harness because of the front clip for my dog who likes to pull. The clip on the front is very flimsy and I don’t trust it with her. This is really surprising because the rest of the harness’ hardware is HEAVY DUTY. I almost returned it but I love the heavy duty handle on it. Otherwise a very well made harness – I use it every day, just not for walks where she will pull. I went with a halti instead. I don’t know why they cheaped out on the front clip as the rest of the harness is fantastic. I will say the attachments for around the belly are a bit cumbersome to do with a large breed, long haired bouncy puppy. It’s the old fashioned belt clips and I sometimes have a hard time sliding it through with all the hair.CaucasianShepherd

I actually bought 4 of theses harnesses and really like the overall design and felt my dogs were safe in the car. However I totally hate the metal buckles as some of them do not buckle very easy. I had to file them down to make them easier to manipulate. And for someone with arthritis putting them on is a struggle, certainly not buckle and go, more like fiddle and fiddle and go. Another thing is if dog turns around everything at the top gets tangled into a big mess. They really should product test what they sell with all kinds of dogs. They are made reasonably well but skimp in the seam fabric which come apart in some areas after even hand washing which then causes fraying of edges. I would pay more if they would fix these problems. Thank you. Their customer service though I found excellent.Esher

Three years ago I bought this harness for my dog and loved it!! Metal fasteners can't be chewed through, fit well and very durable. We have used when traveling since then. We recently got another dog, so got another one but the woven straps are so slippery that I can't keep the harness adjusted. the sliding adjusters slips on th webbing. We love this vest harness! The material is nice and soft and it's so easy to put on, no fussing with extra straps and what not. My puppy was measuring between and small and medium (small in the neck and medium in the girth). Medium ended up being the perfect size for him.AJays Mum

This is a great harness and very easy to use, comfy and secure. However, the X Large is now too small for my 2 year old mini groodle who is approx. 13 kgs. I wish they made a bigger size as he still needs to wear a harness.Verity

First, like someone else mentioned in the review. The harness attracts heat, it can easily overheat a dog in the warm summer days. I would recommend designing the harness so it has cooling pads. I love the front leash loop, I wish more of the ruffwear harnesses had both back and front loops. This harness is better in the winter months, I would not recommend wearing this harness during hotter days during the summer. My dog is an escape artist, has gotten away from several harnesses and collars, including several ruffwears harnesses until I found this harness. The three straps works wonders, she can't figure out how to get out of this harness and she hasn't yet. Only problem is that this harness can get super hot and the second problem is that the front padding is not really doing it's job. The adjustments are hidden and the front padding covers it up, however it feels like a rock and it puts pressure on the dogs chest if using back loop clip. I only use the front loop clip leash attachment which prevents any damage to the chest. I hope this helps, hopefully you can design a new version of this harness, I think all your customers would appreciate it 🙂 Overall, I would still recommend this product, though it does has it's flaws I purchased this harness from REI, so it may not say that the review is verified. I purchased the Switchbak primarily for hiking but ended up using it for Search & Rescue training. I really wouldn’t recommend it for either for a number of reasons. First off, the top is heavily padded and holds in body heat. The padding is totally unnecessary and an overheated dog in the back country can be pretty serious. Second, the pockets are almost useless unless they have equal amounts of weight on each side. I don’t load my dog with weight but just the weight of a 2’ leash in one pocket is enough to cause the harness to twist. Third, the D-ring placement is totally inadequate for a trailing dog. It’s too far forward and it causes the lead to get caught on the dog’s rear legs when making turns while trailing. In my opinion, the people designing these harnesses either lack experience handling working dogs or simply did not think through the design of the product. Unfortunately, this seems to be an issue across the Ruffwear line.Justin

Let me start out by saying that I love walking…I mean its kinda my stick, and since my dogs love sticks, (numerous can be found while walking), its a win-win; however, what isn’t so fun is carrying all the stuff required on a hot summer day, while walking or riding my bike. Bottled water, poopie bags, used poopie bags…don’t you love that left over poopie bag smell. No matter where I put the bag, there is always a little residual smell, and although the leashes I bought have a place to tie them after use, the feeling of a cold poop filled bag slapping against my waist as I walk….annoying to say the least. So, giving my dog pockets was the best solution…carry your own poop! The bag is not huge at all, so if you are a hiker and want your dog to carry some weight, this is not the tool for you. What it can carry is two water bladders (one on each side) with about 16oz of water each, a poopie bag roll, and one or two full poopie bags (as the water bladders empty). I have even had my girl carry my phone when both water bladders were not necessary. This is the maximum though. The side pockets do not expand, so the more you shove in there, the more the harness will stick out away from the dogs body. I will also add that my dog has issues with a lot of harnesses rubbing away her fur. I first ordered the Front Range harness for my Great Pyrenees and Lab. It worked well for the Pyrenees, but with the lab it rubbed away a huge patch of fur on her chest and even started to get little scabs. I then exchanged it for this harness, and her hair has completely grown back with no additional rubbing anywhere else. I only wish it came in pink, as everyone thinks she is a boy, but I thought the blue was the best looking color. Thank you again Ruffwear!Brittney K.

As any husky owner knows, they love pulling, and backing out of harnesses. Huskies put Houdini to shame with their amazing ability to escape from collars and harnesses. After trying a zillion harnesses for our 6th Siberian Husky, we stumbled upon the Goat Trail Tactical and threw our money down in hopeful anticipation. The buckles are amazing, and although the back plastic buckles are stiff to get on and off, that's EXACTLY what we need. The front metal buckles are secure and strong. The straps allow us to snug that harness up tight (not too tight, 2 fingers under) in all the right places to hold it secure without her strangling. The leash loop connectors are metal, securely sewn in and instill confidence that it would take a major catastrophe for them to pull out. Having the front connector allows us to connect a leash on the back and front, limiting her ability to drag us down the street like a sled. The rubber handle on the back… genius! Most harnesses have a flap of material that is difficult to grab, and cuts into your hand, twists, and is virtually worthless, but not the rubber handle on the SSGLex. Easy to grab, sturdy to hold, and perfectly positioned to get control when that suicidal squirrel darts in front of your very prey driven young husky. Getting on and off is a breeze with various ways to go about it: either shove the head through and snap the back up, or one leg through over the top snap neck and back in. Even with young husky totally freaking out because she knows the harness means GO TIME, it's quick and easy to buckle up. The little backpacks are cute, but until she gets out of her velociraptor stage of ripping things to shreds, we took them off, and also moved the included Goat Trail patch on the back. Love all the mollie loops and velcro for various and sundry things. We purchased a Medium because she has some more growing to do and it fits very nicely with plenty of room for adjustments later on. My only suggestions is to include the little strap loops for the back like there are on the front. She took to it well, and seems comfortable enough that she doesn't mind wearing it. She is NOT happy about the front leash restricting her ability to cripple us with her pulling, but she'll get over that. Finally a harness that gives us the confidence and security of knowing she won't back out of it and escape, we can walk her without being dragging down the street (the neighbors are somewhat disappointed that we found this solution and no longer gather on their porches each walk time for entertainment), and is comfortable to her as well. Job well done, I highly recommend this harness to all of my husky owning friends.P.B.

I wanted something more comfy and secure, with a no-pull front ring for my APBT. She’s 65lbs but pulls extremely hard when excited. We moved from a Kong brand harness that I trust with my life but this one is so much more comfy for us both. My concern were the two side clips being plastic which I’m not used to, but I haven’t had any problems, and it doesn’t feel loose after taking it off and on about 30 times. I bought their leash too and it has made walking a breeze as well. Doesn’t make the “bunny runs” as brutal for my shoulder. I’ve only used the front ring with my rope leash, and the no-pull leash with the back ring. Not sure which method is better but both have put me at ease. Worth the money for me.Taylor M.

Harness is top quality, heavy duty and very secure. A world of difference walking my 9 month old highly energetic 60 lb Australian/German Shepherd pup now. Still some training to do but the strong pulling quickly subsides on our walks now and when he does pull he doesn't have the leverage so he's still very manageable. Harness couldn't have come sooner as my boy literally pulled me off my feet a couple days before the harness arrived. Detachable backpack is very cool too. Will easily carry treats and waste bags with bungee strap on top perfect for a small water bottle. Will work great for long hikes up here in the mountains. I would definitely recommend getting the bungee leash as well. I ordered this a few days after the backpack and so glad I did. It also made a huge difference. It adds a certain amount of resistance where my dog quickly tires of pulling and also makes it much easier on both of us since there's no constant jerking motion. Highly Recommend!!!Rick M.

Bought this for my pom Jacob. Needed a trachea friendly harness. Had the right measurements, it fit around his body but not his neck. He's a puppy mill rescue so he has a lot of fears. He didn't like it going over his head or how it constricted his shoulders. It even looked uncomfortable. However, I liked the one I got my Max so much, I got one in red for Jacob and that one was a hit! I wouldn't recommend this item for a fluffy dog but maybe on a short coated dog it would be ok.Christa G

Purchased Halti harness as last resort to control large pup. Due to urgent surgery at 12 weeks of age and essential crating post-operative 24/7 (except for toilet breaks) for 5 weeks following her procedure, the critical period of training unfortunately couldn't be completed during this time frame. Once able to commence training, she had grown significantly, was very strong and strong willed … finding a harness / lead to assist with her training was difficult until stumbling across the Halti harness. For her, this has proven to be the most successful in controlling and assisting with her training … certainly working for my husband and I, and our dog.Sue

Bought this product for a 7 month old puppy that is still learning to walk on lead and pulls so badly on a flat collar that she starts to choke herself. Fitting of the harness was very easy and adjusting the straps very simple. The inclusion of the clasp that attaches to the collar is a very good idea as it helps center the front of the harness as well as a safety precaution if the harness comes loose. I was suprised by how well the harness worked, there was no pulling right from the start. When my puppy gets over-excited (e.g. sees another dog) she attempts to pull but is easily controlled compared to the flat collar. I find the straps need readjusting fairly regularly and as they get loose the harness becomes less effective. This could be overcome by stitching in place at correct adjustment but as my dog is still growing I don't want to do that just yet. Overall I am very happy with the harness and it suits my purpose of continuing to train my dog to walk calmly on lead without her pulling so hard that she is choking herself and possible causing damage.08cactus

Purchased this for our rescue red heeler who had never been walked on a lead at 16 months old. He pulled constantly and walks were unbearable. The first few walks seemed to be improving and now (even with all straps tightened and adjusted to fit) the front point connection slips around to the side of his neck so it loses all benefits of being a front pull harness and he's pulling as bad as ever! Will be looking elsewhere for a harness that doesn't move around as much. Waste of money.Tarsh

First the Pros: this harness is durable and I have no doubt it is strong and durable enough to hold my 70lb pittie when needed. It also does a great job of keeping her from pulling when using the chest loop. We love the Ruffwear brand and I (and my dogs) love the sweaters/clothing as they are always cold in temps below 70°. Cons: I watched the video on fitting the harness and every single walk results in raw skin/bleeding/scabs under her armpits (she has very thin fur on her underside) due to the material of the harness rubbing in this area. I also find the buckles a bit difficult to unclip as they are partially hidden inside the attachment area which means you have to squeeze the buckle through the thick harness material to release the clasp. Because of my love of their other products and the front clip feature, I may try to put some padding or softer material in the underarm area to see if that helps.Melissa S.

For the most part I really like this harness. The construction seems sturdy and the color is nice, and it’s very easy to get on and off. That said, I think it could be improved by lengthening the body (the neck to back, if you will). I have two mixed breed dogs who are very similar in shape, size, and weight. I purchased two of these harnesses, one in extra small and one in small. The small is overall a bit too large around, and the small (although ok for girth) is way too short. I am always trying to keep an eye on their underarms and backs of their elbows to make sure they aren’t getting raw spots. I’ve seen the same issue in other reviews, so I don’t think it’s just my dogs. I would also love it if you could purchase extenders in different sizes, because I think often a smaller size is better all around, but doesn’t extend in girth quite enough, while the next size up is too big. The good still outweighs the not perfect though, and I keep coming back to Ruffwear to buy different styles of harnesses!Samantha N.

I saw this harness at my local REI and without knowing anything about the brand or how it would impact my life, I knew it was “cute”. I bought it for my mischievous lab puppy who weighed around 50 lbs at the time, solely for that reason. The cute factor. I then came here and ordered the Ruffwear Knot-a-leash rope dog leash to match. We used the harness and leash combo for about a week, when my fearless puppy decided to show me how well it works. I was driving on the freeway, and while waiting in traffic to exit on the off ramp, I opened my back windows for her to get some fresh air. She was clipped to a cheap “doggie seatbelt clip” so she was secure, or so I thought. I hadn’t noticed that she had un-clipped herself from the seatbelt until the moment I saw her jump right out the car window, and disappear from my view. She wasn’t trained at the time and would make a run for it anytime possible. I panicked picturing my dog running into freeway traffic and being hit, but to my disbelief I found her hanging off the car window, being securely help in place by this harness and the rope leash that was still inside the car. The impact of her weight combined with the momentum of the jump, did nothing but dent the locking system of the carabiner shut, and held her weight without letting her escape or even touch the ground for that matter, and not a single rip happened to either the harness or the leash otherwise. This “expensive, but cute” dog accessory prevented my dog from a terrifying death that would have surely happened had she not been wearing both of these incredible, life-saving items. We have a slender, silky coated hound who is wiggly, at just a year. She appears to be a mix of greyhound and Rhodesian ridgeback, very muscular. She can slip out of many harnesses that are not covering enough of her torso. We put on the tactical vest, and not only did it fit well and give ud more control and confidence on the leash, but it relieved my fears of Penny breaking out in a dead run to who-knows-where. ) she does have a chip). I really like the idea behind this product. The concept is great and totally useful for Furbabies like our 7 month old Big and Restless Rescue Pup. Front seat to Back seat then Front seat to Back seat. She's all over the place like a jack rabbit and not only is it Super Annoying but can be Very Dangerous as well. This Sherpa® Crash Tested Seatbelt Safety Harness is an awesome way of stopping that. Only concern i have is that it's quite short so it kinda of pulls her down and she can't sit pretty comfortably and HAS no choice but to lay down. The Harness itself though fits her perfectly and had been so very helpful in training her to stay, walk with me and not pull too much.Rileysmomanddad

Sherpa® Crash Tested Seatbelt Safety Harness, Black, Medium is very sturdy. I’ve never used one on my dog other than she’s home but when I go out she’s able to come with. The harness didn’t move on her. She wasn’t sure about being buckled in though. She’s use to laying down sleeping on car rides so I didn’t like that she couldn’t. She wanted to lay down and didn’t seem to like it. I’m sure she should get use to it. It’s a great safety feature on long car rides. The straps seem high quality. Didn’t dig into her skin. I love this harness. I haven't used it for the reason I bought it yet, (to be used on my dog while paddle boarding), but I have discovered it's amazing ability to thwart my dog's whale like antics to throw herself backward, going limp, and melt right out of the harness like a cooked noodle when she doesn't want to go or leave somewhere. My dog is a 55lb Golden Retriever / Border Collie, she's a big heavy noodle. I used to own the Rabitgo dog harness which was nice for her to wear while we biked, however within 3mo she learned how to pinch her shoulders together and melt out of the harness. She would also (mostly at the dog park) go stiff leg when we would leave and then rear up and throw herself backward ( like a whale jumping out of the ocean )so she was sprawled on the ground. Your only option was to literally drag her from the park. She is 4yrs old now and is an amazing whale flopper.. she can slip out of anything… until now. I can literally just hold her in the air by my side while she tries to wiggle and squirm out of the harness to no avail with this RuffWear harness. For that reason alone this harness is worth every penny to me, whether or not it works in the water. As far as fitting goes, I bought the large. Her neck is 19inches. Behind the front legs 31inches. In front of the back legs 25 inches. From base of neck to the start of the tail is 27 inches in length. It seems to fit her well. The components are well built the D ring is sturdy the buckles are heavy duty and it's well stitched. I think the only thing that could make this harness better would be having another D ring in the front. I know they have other harnesses with this feature, but multiple attachments is just handy when it comes to dogs. Overall, I would recommend this harness and I won't be going back to my previous harness.McKenna B.

This harness is perfect for our furry escape artist! We've been using this harness for years (this is our third one) and she has never gotten out of it. It is adjustable to get a comfortable fit. The handle is wonderful when you need to make sure you have solid control, such as when small children want to greet the doggo nose to nose. Even though this is our third harness purchase, I want to clarify that the previous harnesses did not wear out and they are still structurally sound. We walk a lot and they faded due to sun and water exposure after a few years. And one of them took a beating from my cleaning attempts after an unfortunate encounter with a skunk. This is a good product. It is a really long harness so it bunches up in the middle when my dogs sit and when we are walking sometimes. The quality of the material is good and I do not feel like they are going to pull out of the harness. I do have an issue with the sizing chart. I got a large because that is what I normally have to get for my labs and then after the order looked at the chart. It showed that I should have gotten an XL at least. The large fits both of them fine and I have a 50 lbs and 80 lbs lab!Huntere

I picked this harness because it looked comfortable and tough, both highly important things when it comes to gear my dog wears. My dog is a husky/border collie mix and walking him with only a collar is unpleasant for both him and me. With this harness I have much better control with him, and he seems happy to wear it. What a fantastic harness! My 90 pound dood is a consummate outdoorspoodle and now he can pack his own water, snacks, and frisbee thanks to the bungee cord feature. The harness is wonderfully customizable. I have a Huge, deep chested giant pal who is wearing the 2-3X size. The straps are incredibly adjustable at the shoulder, neck, and across the girth to fit a wide variety of pup shapes. The material is extremely durable, seems to resist staining (I give it a quick rinse when my mudpuppy has really had fun), and most important, the harness is lightly padded for comfort. My pal literally jumps for joy when he sees it because he knows he's off on an adventure. I also love the bright yellow which pops at night when we are out exploring. The bungee cording is threaded though material that feels like the hook side of velcro. I plan to purchase the Backcountry X Petco Go Bag so we can carry even more fun along on our adventures. The Halo definitely gives my dog more freedom when walking as far as not hurting himself when he bumps into things. My only complaint would be that the wire is rather easy to bend out of placement when he bumps into something hard, or even gets it stuck/caught on something.
