It's very hard plastic. The holes are very small so it's almost impossible to clean the inside unless you use maybe a small brush but even then good luck. I wish I could tell you why, but, this bone has been through five dogs (my personal dog, and four service dogs in training I fostered) over the last four years, and not a single one of them has liked this bone. I’m not sure if it’s the flavor, or what. But it was not the cheapest Nylabone, either, so it’s a bit disappointing that none of them had any interest in it. I always thought maybe the next dog would like it, and they don’t. It has a bit of chewing done on it, but not nearly as much as the other ones. This ring was the best investment! My pup goes through most chew toys in minutes as she LOVES to chew. This ring lasted a little over 7 months before she got to the red “safety” layer. I sent it in for the guarantee (paid shipping both ways, around $15) and got a brand new one! My pup has been chomping the new one for almost 2 months and it’s going strong. HIGHLY recommend for pups that love to chew! I have a 1 year old English Bulldog who loves to chew and destroy things. There has not been a toy she hasn't destroyed yet. I saw this one and decided to get it a month and a half ago. Honestly, my dog is little (Yorkie) and initially she was afraid of the JW Hol-ee Roller! But that was short-lived. To get her going I found some treats just the right size and stuffed them in the holes. Well you know, anything to do with treats has to be good! That got "the ball rolling"! No pun intended. Now it is one of her favorite toys. It's great because she usually wants me to interact with her with her toys but this one she is content to play with herself. The way it is designed she can basically throw it in the air herself then chase after it. I no longer put treats in it. So far she hasn't been able to chew it up but if that should ever happen I hope they are still on the market because I will have to replace it. They would make great doggie gifts too. We have bought several of these over the years and in various sizes. They are so much fun for the dogs and with a little creativity you can use them for an endless number of games and configurations. They are durable and easily washable and can be played with outside, in the water at the beach or pool, or inside. We like to stuff treats and toys and chews inside. Sometimes we tie a rope and fling it around outside for the dog to chase after. We have tied pieces of fabric to make snuffle balls so the dogs have to work to get their kibble or treats out of it. We have stuffed smaller holee-rollers inside and other toys like tennis balls or stuffed squeaky toys. Sometimes we shove a cow ear or a thick piece of dried buffalo/beef cheek roll or other long lasting chew. There are so many ways to customize this simple rubber ball. We bought 2 sizes of this toy – the 5\" and the 8\". Both are great. Our dog is not a heavy chewer, nor a great retriever, but she loves to chase after this toy, catch it and run around with it. Because of the holes, it\'s easy for a dog to pick up. If she does come back to me with it, we play a bit of easy tug with it, though I\'m careful not to hold it too tightly as I read somewhere that someone broke their finger playing with it. I initially didn’t think that this toy would hold up to my dog’s chewing, because he typically destroys plastic toys within minutes. He has been playing with it for weeks, and only managed to chew up the bones on the side. It still functions with the rawhide rings, so I am able to use it as a toy as well as a treat. It takes him quite some time to get the treats off, so I am able to work in the kitchen without being begged. My dogs love this toy. It keeps them busy chewing the rawhide treats that you can refill. They also enjoy playing with this. It is the perfect size for my Medium and Large size dogs. My dog is quite destructive and this toy has been perfect for him! It doesn’t not squeak loud either which is very important to me as that can be annoying. We’ve had this for about two weeks and it’s gotten daily abuse from our two dogs, 45lbs and 55lbs. The rope parts are holding up well, but the fabric has torn some where they use it for tug of war. The fabric hasn’t ripped all the way through, just where they bite and twist it, and the toy is still 100% functional. I usually throw it for our retriever, and our mutt starts a tug of war game when she’s bringing it back. They both love this thing.Danielle W.

We have had several Playology toys – the ball, 2 types of bones, and now this ring. Our Aussie is a pretty aggressive chewer and the toys we have purchased have lasted and he still enjoys all of them. The peanut butter scent was kind of nasty smelling at first to us, but the chicken and beef have been fine. I have not used the rope or pebble so not sure about those for durability. I highly recommend the other Playology toys and will buy again.Carolyn J
