Beware of this product. We bought this product for our 3 month old sheepdog puppy. She loved the product, however, one very early morning, around 4am she was in her crate and starting whining. So I got up and took her outside to relief herself. She came back in and went into her crate. I didn't realize she was wet from the dew on the grass. In the morning around 8am when we took her out of her crate we discovered we had a "blue" dog. Her white legs, underbelly and chest were blue. Smurf blue! We tried bathing her and it didn't come out. I mixed up some peroxide with some shampoo as I am a hairdresser and tried applying that without gloves to make sure it wouldn't burn her. Even with that mixture very little blue come out, it had definitely stained her coat. We took her to the groomer they tried but ended up shaving down her legs and underbelly not to the skin but short. She is still a silver blue and we will have to wait for her coat to grow out a bit more and trim it again. It's NOT coming out… Do not purchase this product! My husband & I were strolling through WalMart and he happened to see this mat on a shelf and pointed it out to me. We do not own dogs. However, I have issues with night sweats and have tried almost everything including adding a window ac unit to our bedroom. Our German Shepherd absolutely loved this cooling mat! He would lay on it every time he came in from outside. About 6 months ago we purchased this and then a 4 months later, the seam started to rip in one area, causing the mat to leak. I have a 13 year old Giant Schnauzer that can’t get up without help so she can’t cool herself off and can’t rotate to get more comfortable. I have purchased more than 15 of these Cool Bed IIIs over the past 10 years only because K&H Products has a patent on these beds and are not available from anyone else. Everyone I've purchased has leaked at the seams within a year. The 2 year warranty is only good for the original purchase and not for the replacement mattresses. The latest purchase leaked immediately after adding 3 gallons of water to the large Cool Bed III, which is half the recommended amount of water. Contacting K&H to obtain a replacement is quite involved requiring one to destroy the leaking mattress so that it cannot be used and take photos of it to send to the company. My dog loves this mat – at first he was a bit stand-offish about it, but soon he went over and laid down on it and it was immediate acceptance. It is a bit slick to the touch, and I think that was what he didn't like at first. We spend a fair amount of time outside on the deck and in the back yard this time of year, and it gets hot out there. I put this pad under a table for some shade and the dog heads for it every time we go out there. I also tested it myself – it is cooling to the touch, and I put it in my living room chair to try out it's ability to deliver on it's claim of being a cooling pad. The cooling mat is a good idea, but I think most dogs won't like that it is stiff plastic. I have a boarder collie who gets very hot and loves the coolness of the tile floor. However laying on the hard tile floor is very bad for her joints and makes her stiff. I thought she would definitely go right to the mat as it is cushiony and she seeks out cool places to lay. But she would NOT use it, no matter where I put it (any of her favorite cooler places). The mat is a great idea – it is cushiony and cool, but if your dog is at all finicky, it probably won't like the "plastic-ness" of it. I also noticed after my dog layed on it for a longer period of time it had actually become warm. My 12 and half year old Finnish Lapphund doesn't take to new things quickly and most times outright rejects them. He worked out pretty quickly this was working in his favour. He has worked out to stay on it for about 3 hours and change to the second one ( I purchased 2 ) then repeat back to the first as it has cooled back down. I love that he loves them and he is happy. I’m pleased (and relieved) to report that my very particular English Labrador has rated her Cool Pad with a big Paws Up. When it arrived she didn’t want to go near it. “What IS this? WHY do I need to lay down on it? Is this some sort of trick? Am I going to have to walk around this now? Just the weight of the dog causes the pad to become cool. The dogs love it! Even though it cools off in the evening, I move the pad to their bed at night so they sleep much better. We have two toy poodle pups, so I bought a LARGE size pad so they could both use it and have plenty of room. I also bought the pad cover as well, and it is a finely woven cloth, very similar to nice pillowcase. This cooling pad is a must have, especially if you live in the warmer cimate areas. Here in Texas, when the dogs come in after playing, this is the first place they go. I’m pleased (and relieved) to report that my very particular English Labrador has rated her Cool Pad with a big Paws Up. When it arrived she didn’t want to go near it. “What IS this? WHY do I need to lay down on it? Is this some sort of trick? Am I going to have to walk around this now? If you like it so much, you lay on it” … etc. The wonderfully helpful people at the Green Pet Shop suggested if she is particular about texture, I might try getting a cover. That did the trick! I didn’t even realize they sold covers. Yes, you can make one, but theirs fits absolutely perfectly and I’m sure it will keep it in even better condition. The cover is thin and does not affect the cooling process. Because it fits the pad perfectly, it doesn’t slide around. What a difference! She walked over and got right on it. I nearly fell over. This is smaller than I thought. I must have clicked on the wrong size because it doesn't fit my crate at all. It is very thin and wouldn't support my cats' or kittens' weight, so I'm not real happy with this mat. It could be used as a liner to keep litter off the plastic bottom of the crate, but that's about all.
The mats were the perfect size for the crates. I liked the backing as it helped keep the mats from sliding around in the crates. Unfortunately in less than 24 hours my dogs chewed these mats up. They were able to undo the stitching around the mat and then access the fiberfill interior. I was not thrilled about that. I may repurchase later after my pups outgrow their chewing phase.PyrOwner
When I received it in the mail I was surprised to see how thin it was. I was expecting something a little more plush. The fabric is very soft, however. I have noticed that the material frays a bit and I find brown fuzz on the carpet outside of the crate. My dog seems to like it but when it comes time to buy a new one I'll probably get something a little thicker. Seeing how this year has been hot, it’s nice for everyone to cool down, especially with our pets. Once the package came, it was a huge help for us. When I checked the package, the box was not well secured as the photo demonstrates, but the pad was nice and it felt premium, it came with a note which makes it a lot more satisfying and it cooled as it says. The fact that my pet won't lay on this doesn't really affect my review, but that is key. Dogs are particular and don't always want to lay or sit where you want them too. My 15 lb, miniature dachshund and I went around the block a few times in Florida and I decided it would be the best time to introduce her to this. It had been sitting on the floor all morning and no attempt to go check it out by her was made. We came back, she guzzled down some water and after some failed attempts of coaxing her to come over to it, I picked her up and placed her on it. She stayed there just long enough to take this picture and then split and laid on our tile. She has yet to go back to it. I've touched it on various occasions and my tile is always colder than the pad. I plan on trying this outside on the porch or yard at some point but it's been raining non stop. The mat is fairly small considering it is a medium. She is long but if she sprawled out lengthwise on her side, she would take up all the mat (given she is long). I have a 16 lb jack russel terrier, and he hangs off of the mat and isn't a fan either. The medium mat should really be recoded as small. Some dogs are a fan of cots and mats, mine aren't. But all in all, I think the product is too small, has an awkward seam in the middle that perhaps affects the comfort, isn't notably cooler and neither dog is a fan.VonBon
I live in Texas and it has been quite hot and humid lately. So when I saw this Chillz Pet Pad, Blue, Medium (20" x 15") to keep him cool. When the grandchildren (two toddlers) come to visit, I put the dog in a spare room to keep him and them apart. It is not as cool as the rest of the house, so I got this to keep him cool and comfortable while he is there. The mat is blue and has cool gel in it. It is made from a strong, puncture resistant material and feels soft to the touch. It is not real thin and does cushion some. I put it in his crate so he can lay on it. You can also use it outside, in the car, on your floor or on your furniture. I also like to put it on my couch where it serves a dual purpose, cooling him and protecting the fabric of the couch as well. I got the medium size for my Chihuahua. Got this bed for an older 50 lb. dog needing a soft place to lay, also got another 4-5 inch thicker orthopedic bed for her.As soon as we opened and laid this bed out she got on it and didn't get off of it except to go out to the bathroom, then came right back to the bed. It gives a little from her lying on it but I just shake it out to fluff it up. Its not real thick about 2 inches but soft and she seems to like it better than the sheepskin rug she use to sleep on.She rotates from this to the thicker bed, but I think this one gets a little more use.All in all a good bed that is easy to throw in the washing machine, soft and good neutral color.
