The entire pen is secured with two included hooks and then can be configured to any shape necessary. This size should provide adequate space for small dogs to enjoy for quite play. The height of this particular size may be overkill for small dogs unless they are agile jumpers. I ordered this for my greyhound for leisurely sunning without needing a leash. The height is adequate but the interior space is just enough for her outdoor bed and her body. I will order another two to provide more area for investigating the outdoors next spring.Sharon
I use these pens for my angora rabbits. They are a larger breed and some of them will jump over the other pens with little effort. I really like the door and the child proof hook. It's tall and sturdy and has enough stakes for every section. I bought it when the price came down and loved it so much that I bought two more! I like Midwest products as the metal seems to be stronger and last longer than other brands. I have the original ex-pen I bought around 1995 – it's survived 50+ large dogs. I prefer them to crates as the dogs have more room to move around, yet they are easily configured to a smaller shape when potty training. They easier to clean than crates. They fold flat and I can store them next to a fridge or behind a furnace. They work indoors/out and are great mobile containment. For dogs living in fenceless areas (condos) ex-pens can be linked using carabiners/bolt snaps (i.e., dog leash clips) for fencing moveable for mowing/snow removal. They are great for patio surrounds. You can buy metal tops for if a dog needs more containment, but most won't if using a tall enough ex-pen. I've also bought just the metal or plastic crate pans to put under the ex-pen if needed. It's a good size, but the instruction that came with it wasn't helpful at all. I ended using zip ties to secure the fence section alongside the door latch. The rubber rolls that came with it were quite useless. My pup could easily get them off. I recommend you purchase the life touch one instead.K

Wish it came in a larger diameter, but I think the 38 will work for now. The puppy will only be about 4 pounds when I get her but will grow to be 8-10 pounds, so the pen should give her enough room to play until she is trained. I also like that it has a zippered top that can be taken off while inside or zipped on if outside because she is small enough to become prey to hawk, owls, or coyotes. Also like the pockets, the tote bag, and the fact that it is so light weight.

I bought the pink one for my 3 month old American cocker spaniel and it was definitely not a good choice. It's cute and the color is nice but it's too easy for the sides to cave in and if your dog or cat is super crazy, they can actually move this around the floor like a hamster ball. This is probably fine for small, inactive puppies, dogs, kittens or cats. It's spacious enough for a sedentary furry friend. Reason for purchase is becuase I will be out of state for the summer and the person whom will be babysitting doesnt want her on the sofa and using the bathroom on the floor. For dogs living in fenceless areas (condos) ex-pens can be linked using carabiners/bolt snaps (i.e., dog leash clips) for fencing moveable for mowing/snow removal. They are great for patio surrounds. You can buy metal tops for if a dog needs more containment, but most won't if using a tall enough ex-pen. I've also bought just the metal or plastic crate pans to put under the ex-pen if needed. To keep the ex-pen from falling or being moved if I have a rambunctious pup I bungee the corners to furniture or door knobs.HannahB
I ordered several of these to use as barriers to prevent my young Border Collie from running through the mud in our back yard after it rains. This is perfect for my purpose. I needed a tall fence outside to keep my dogs out of a certain area. The 16 foot length is perfect. My dogs are pretty respectful of fences, so I didn't need anything heavy duty. It isn't clear from the picture nor the description, but there is a door. I have it upside down on purpose so that I can walk through instead of crawl through the opening. I purchased this product to put my new puppy in for short periods of time when I needed to do something. It was so flimsy my 3.5 lb puppy was able to drag it all over and my adult daughter bent over to pick him up barely touching the fence and it caved in with her falling hard to the floor just missing the pup. So for my particular purpose it did not work. Its a great idea and Im sure would work for another idea but I would not recommend for puppies or any dogs to be placed in this fence.Tina

I love everything about this dog pen, except that one of the panels was missing the upper hinge. I did not want the hassle and wastefulness of returning the entire large and heavy item. I tried to see if I could just get a single replacement panel, but I don't know how to do that. I guess I will just keep it and only use 7 of the panels *Sigh* (If anyone can get a single panel replacement – please let me know!) The raised gate is perfect for not rubbing on the floor and scratching it up. the panels are not too heavy I could construct the pen easily. I love that there are different shapes that you can make with the panels, depending on your space available. If I could give zero stars I would. It has rusted so badly HUGE FLAKES fall off of it. Not only is it now unattractive I worry about the health of my dog. I have used this to host puppy playdates over 2 years. Cannot be happier with purchase. My front yard is not completely fenced; There was a need to fence off, but not permanently as we use front yard for other purposes. Fences are flexible, can be set up in any figures as needed. Once I figure out where to put fences, it takes 10 mins to set up, 10 mins to take down. I initially bought 2 sets, and neighbors and friends praised, and we had so many puppy visitors. That led me to buy 1 more set so the playpen could be bigger. Despite I have 3x sets, once taken down, they store nicely in small tight space on the side of house. Each set comes with 1 panel with a door. Since I have 3x sets, I have 3x panels with door. I set up door fences on three sides of yard for convenience. Summer days, we had playpen every evening. Throughout year, we hosted playpen for every possible occasions; puppy birthday, anniversary, holidays, new puppy debut… We initially worried that some dogs might jump out and run away, but that never happened. Dogs are capable, but wanted to stay inside for fun. We actually had dogs jump in. If you need to just hold puppies around 1 – 3 months, you could buy 1 set. But, if you are planning any meaningful puppy playdate, you will need minimum 2 sets, most likely 3or 4. Love that’s it’s washable. I got the medium and it’s a great size. Good for in and out doors. I know some said for indoors the dogs would flip it. Which I have a 4lb puppy that does just that. But I zip the top and she uses it like a hamster ball to get around. It’s actually quite entertaining for us lol. Puppy paws get stuck/trapped in between wires that are spaced too far apart at each panel connection. Happened twice to our Labrador puppy in period of 2 weeks. Very scary for puppy-lots of howling; she was hanging by her paw; and not fun for us to rescue her from this hazardous pen. This happened while we were in the room with her. This is a great product. Very sturdy metal and extremely easy to assemble without reading instruction (it didn't take more than 2 mins). I use it for an 8 week old Doberman and I can tell the dimensions will also work for when she is fully grown. Since I keep it on concrete floor, I am using a couple of heavy buckets to keep it in place in case the dog jumps on the walls. I seriously recommend this product. It was money well spent.Angela
I purchased two of the large pens (40inch) to connect together while we camp with our two Gold Lab mixes. We have only used it once so far but we were satisfied with the exercise yard. We didn’t have any issues as far as bent wires or frames. Assembly was quick and easy, the frame was sturdy. We love being able to take our pups with us while camping but with two dogs the stake and tie out is a pain, constantly tangling with each other and other items in the little bit of yard space each camper gets. We have recommended it to our fellow camping friends and have even had a few bring their dogs to check out our play yard. While looking the exercise yard only had one review on this site and it wasn’t very good, however other sites selling the same product had a better mix of reviews and we decided to buy it and are glad we did.HappyCamper23

Easy to fold and move around. It is very flimsy. If my puppy jumped on it while it was set up in the house, she would be able to push it around the living room. She might even hurt herself by jumping on something that would not support her weight. The door is not sturdy and would not even open all the way. I do like that there is not a bar across the top of the door frame that I would have to go under each time I went in there to clean up. I returned this product and kept the sturdier one.Ashley

After using for a month, Today my (about 15 weeks old) golden retrievers PAW got wedged and stuck between the bars and I literally felt like superwoman and had to pry it open. I bought this because I’m staying with my sister temporarily and have 2 dogs. I used to live in an apartment with wood floors and apparently, my dogs don’t like carpet. I work from home so I rarely leave the house but the dogs (both under 12lbs) started ripping at the carpet. I bought this for them to chill in when I leave to get groceries/gas etc. It is a really large size which I love. I would say it seems a bit flimsy but again, my dogs are small. This kennel is extra large and wonderful to hold their bed and then room for training pads. The tray on the bottom is metal and very sturdy. We are loving this as an option. The Cons….Metal tray is not as large as the crate—so we have some wetting outside the tray. ( boy dog) The handles —-one was broken off when arrived. It is not welded very well. We just put duck tape as a handle and use it that way. Overall this is a great crate. Just have to make a few minor adjustments. The biggest being the tray is not as large as the crate.Sand
Seemed like a really good solution for my lab mix whose afraid of storms but in her 1st night I didn’t get any sleep when I laid down. The lifting of the cage walls( they are not secured to the bottom in any way at all and sit around the cage bottom that is about an inch in space on all sides from the cage bars). A stand up, and a simple push was all it too for her to get free the 1st time. 2nd attempt, I secured here cage in the corner of a room with my stationary exercise bike pinning it in a corner. Bloody mouth, paws and less than 10 minutes later 8 had to let her out. She bent the bars inward as they aren’t as strong as they look. Heavy duty is an understatement. Could not return it since it’s technically used, but this was the 1st day I used it. Total waste of my money. My dog is NOT a wild puppy either, as she is 12 yrs old, only 65lbs and not aggressive at all.Nikki
