I ordered this Ideal Pet Door from Walmart.com to replace the same model Ideal Pet Door originally installed over 10 years ago. Walmart.com had the best price and ordering from their website is convenient with fast shipping. This Ideal Pet Door is the same model with slightly different modifications which makes it a better door than my first one. Removing the old door was very easy to do. Replacing the new door was just as easy. All I needed was a Phillips head screwdriver and my fur~kid supervising me. BTW, The original installation took an hour and was placed into a glass storm door with a solid lower panel. The Pet Door is sturdy and comes with a panel that slides into slots on the inside to block the pet door opening. It can be used when travelling or when you want to keep your pet in or out. It has a magnetic strip on the bottom part of the frame and one on the bottom of the flap which keeps the flap closed. I have never had an unwelcome guest come through the door. The Ideal Pet Door is a great value, construction is flawless and replacement parts are available. It has lasted through years of two rambunctious very bad black labs and I am replacing it by choice. It can be installed in doors, storm doors, sliding patio door inserts and in brick walls. Ideal is well know for their quality pet products and has been in business for decades. I personally wouldn't consider any other manufacturer.tami76137

Extremely easy to install.* Looks and functions better than expected in an interior door. The screws were a bit long considering the width of the door. I would suggest using shorter screws because they were hard to screw in completely, and I was using a drill to drive the screws! Overall, the door is an excellent value and I would buy another one if needed. I went with a slightly larger door than typically recommended for cats. One reason is that we are expected one cat to grow large. (We think he's a Norwegian forest cat. Before that we guessed Maine Coon.) Also, there are steps immediately on one side of the door, so I figured extra clearance would help. The smaller door would probably work OK for normal sized, fit cats. (*I traced the part that slides through the door, drilled holes where the screw posts fit through, and just cut along those lines with a jig saw. It fit right through perfectly the first time! I had a moment of minor shock when I wasn't sure if I oriented the door properly since the middle screw posts are not centered. I did, but it would have been a correctable mistake.)shuumai

We have not installed it in the door yet…but just looking at it, it looks sturdy and indestructible, which is good, because my dog literally eats and tears the doors with the flexible plastic. I have 7 dogs of varying sizes who use this door constantly. The only fault I find is that the rubber gaskets between the slats in the door wear out . Everything else lasts a very long time. I tweaked it by putting piano hinges between the slats and that has extended its use a lot. If I could buy just that part the door would last practically forever! After reading all of the reviews, the VERY common problem is the hinge. This is going to be my 3rd or 4th door and second to purchase (the sizable hole is hard to find a replacement for), most EVERYONE has had the exact same broken and weak point of the hinge. Some of these comments are from long enough ago, you would think that the company would look at the common problems and try and fix the issue. I've had this door for a year now, and after a year of modifying, and remodifying, I give. Simply not a great door for strong dogs. Our doberman broke the door out initially, it was put back in place. The 2nd time he broke it out some of the plastic fasteners broke off. My SO ended up modifying the door with an aluminum strip and all new hardware. It's been broken off several times even with the new modifications. The key backs fall off and we didn't end up using them anyways to begin with. The frame is solid, we got the wall kit which is flimsy and had to seal ourselves but nonetheless it's installed. I'd love to order another model that will fit the already permanent opening. As of current, our heat's turned off until we figure out what to do to fix the door. It's not strong enough for large dogs, they bust it right out!Bunnyfromdahood

Purchased the door about a month ago. We have 4 dogs ranging in size from 6.5 lb to 60 lb. All of them use the door even the little guy. The big dog did not need any training at all he instinctively new when it went click he could go! I was concerned about the reviews but it seemed to me that these were all very large dogs by height and the photos of the installs seemed low to me. I would recommend the product. No more getting up two or three times a night. YAAA I installed it myself, granted I am more of a handyman than most, but I am also over the 65 mark +. So I would expect the young bucks to do it even faster. But you do need to have a supply of the D cells. Batteries are not what they used to be and you only get about a month or a little less use. I am concerned about how long the tag battery will last, time will tell. Great Productricky5437

I had a Large PetSafe Dog Door in my previous home. I loved the panel that came with it that would "slide-in" and allowed the door to be "locked". When I purchased my new home, a new dog door was on the top of my to do list. I went to the store to purchase one. I notice the x-large door was cheaper than the large door (I thought it was on sale or what not) so I opted for the larger door. When it was time to install the door (my brother installed it for me), I came home to notice that the Panel did not slide in and lock like my previous dog door, instead it just "pops" on. From the outside of the door it would take very little effort for someone to "pop" the panel off. And in fact, from inside…my dogs have mastered "popping" it off themselves…making the panel absolutely useless. I've now done some research and noticed there are two types of PetSafe dog doors…aluminum and plastic. Apparently the aluminum door is what I had previously with the "sliding" panel…and now I am the disappointed owner of the plastic door with the "popping" panel. Had I known there was a difference in doors…I would have opted for a Large Aluminum PetSafe dog door; however, now I'm stuck with a useless X-Large Plastic PetSafe dog door. Now because there is an X-Large hole cut out of my door, I would have to go with an X-Large Aluminum PetSafe dog door, but I cannot afford to spend that kind of money, and a Large Aluminum Petsafe dog door will not fit the space. If I were rich, I could just buy a new door and a new dog door, and problem solved; however, I am not rich, and even the thought of having to buy another dog door when I've already purchased one is making me very upset, but the Panel for the Plastic Door is truly useless…and the Panel component is extremely important in my situation. The Plastic Dog Door itself is a good dog door…I only have a problem with its "popping" Panel. If the Panel is an Important feature for you as well…please go with the Aluminum door, NOT the Plastic door. I sure wish I had known about the difference in the first place!Kari

Just order our 3rd doggie door. Our first door was installed when we first moved in almost 17 years ago. We had a two small dogs so the cat size was perfect. As they aged we needed to replace the dog door size to make it a bit easier for the now old dogs to use. Also the house door was changed so we wanted a new dog door for appearences. Now our replacement door flap doesn't fit as air tight and we have lost a bit of the plastic on the out side frame. These things are due to LOTS of use and NJ weather. Hot summers and Freezing winters. Plastic really gets tortured. Ours was installed by the men installing the storm door so that was a plus for us. I called in to get a price on a new door and Pam in customer service was able to answer all my questions and provide me with just what I needed. Thank You Pam. My new door should be here with in the week ready for our Jack Russell pup and silly grandchildren that think its a hoot to come in thru the doggie door. This is a good product-needs to be installed properly like another item in your home that gets this much use. If that is done and you inspect it when cleaning it you should have years of use. Nice pet door! I was a little irritated with the plastic screws and cheaper design, but I understand why the company went with the plastic screws. Installed well. And this really needs to be internal pet door for those questioning which one to buy. Window cat door arrived in tact and was very easy to install. Fits snuggly onto window sash using foam strip underneath to block any drafts or openings. The only reason this is not getting 5 stars is that the weather stripping to be used on top of the insert was not wide enough to block the gap between the upper and opened lower window. We ended up using a piece of pipe insulation to block the gap. A section of styrofoam pool noodle is also useable. We also cut a piece of PVC pipe to insert in the window track to keep the lower window from being able to be lifted up as a security measure. It took a little while for our cat to adjust to using the door. Prior to that we had inserted a piece of cardboard with a door size hole in it to see if our cat would use the opening to go from the house to the screened porch and if the regular cat door size would be large enough for him. He used this easily so we ordered the window. We used treats and showed him how to push the door open. He was hesitant to push the door open with his head so we would hold it open for him to go through, lessening how much we would open it every day. He took to using the door unaided to enter the house in 2 days. However he remained hesitant to use it to go out without assistance. Using pieces of tuna as enticement and continuing to partially open the door for him he slowly decided he could use it to go out after a little over a week and after 2 weeks has no problems using the door in either direction.Nancy B

This is without a doubt the best option I could have hoped for my pets needs. First off I have a 50lb Siberian Husky. My dog has to go outside to use the restroom every 2 hours for medical reasons, and I wasn't able to install a dog door at my current residence. After countless attempts to implement something similar, I finally found this dog door/window. I was extremely impressed when I first got it and had no complaints, but recently it really proved its quality. I was skeptical leaving it in the window knowing bad weather was coming, but I decided to test it anyway. It passed flawlessly against direct 70+MPH winds with no water leaks whatsoever. This is my second cat door. I've had a different style on my sliding patio door for several years and all my cats use it. The problem with that one is that it makes the open doorway very narrow for us non-cats. When I saw this I thought it would be better because I hardly ever open the bedroom windows and this room has three windows so I still have two that I can use. From opening the box to having it completely installed took less than 20 minutes. The instructions are simple: raise sash, remove screen, place cat door, release side spring screws, lower sash. Another minute or two to apply the weather seals over the cat door and at the top of the sash. The installation is solid, with no gaps and no rattles. My cats were using it with complete confidence the same afternoon. I have low window sills inside that the cats were already using as perches. I just put a few cinder blocks on the outside of the house for them to have steps down to the grass. If you have higher windows you may want to plan easy approaches on both sides so the cats don't have to jump all the time.lorettayeo

Having two doggy doors has always been a problem. The prior doors were made of plastic and with our weather changing all the time, the would break apart quickly but not with these new Metal doors. And the flap is even made better. Couldn't be more pleased!!priddyclover

Pet door flaps made very cheap,extremely light weight, when the slightest wind comes along both flaps are straight out to the outside, magnets in the wrong place to hold the flaps, I have had pet doors for many years and NEVER had this problem, I will never recommend buying this one, not worth the money for sure, very disappointed. I purchased this door at least 5 years ago and every year we’re replacing the plastic adapter that attaches to the hinges that hold/support the flaps. We’ve had to order the whole door replacement kit to fix this problem and now once again, we have to order a whole kit for these My pictures show the extra parts collection needed to replace the 4 plastic adapters and the adapters after they break and crack from dogs using the door on a daily basis.Edman

Most important part of the doors is the flap hinge mechanism and it's made of cheap plastic which fails after the warranty period expires. For the cost of these doors, they should be better built.Dan S

I have a huge 75lb male english bulldog, a 35lb corgi and an 18lb maltese. I was worried about the small ones getting through this with the double flaps and also it being the super large one, but so far they are better with the door than the bulldog is. This door is great. And since my corgi has the shortest legs I actually put the door a little lower than you are supposed to and it was totally fine. The only thing I don't like about this door so far is the wind does push open the flaps, but it's usually only when it is pretty bad out. And I haven't had a problem with my magnets falling back in line on the bottom of the flaps like some people posted about, so I really like this door!Natalie

This pet door is sturdy and durable. The template didn't line up, so we installed the door without it. I have a very large dog that plows through it at top speed and it has held up to his abuse. I have a tripod dog and she is able to use it without any problems. We did have to remove one of the flaps to get the dogs used to it with treats. It gave us a sense of comfort knowing the dogs could go in and out of the house while we were out of town and couldn't take them with us. I also have a large dog who is terrified of thunderstorms and I hated leaving her when I knew our normal weather patterns would include late afternoon storms. This door was much easier to install than my previous door. Just as advertised it prevents the wind from blowing the flaps open and letting the A/C escape. Lifechanging! We were slaves to our pets and now laugh at the German Shepard who jumps in and out constantly. Our cats took a minute to overcome the heavy flap but are now using regularly. Even our blind chihuahua who is very timid has even become accustomed to it.Amanda

This is a great dog door. I bought it to replace a well used older PetSafe medium door. It took a little longer to install since my door already had a previous door. Mostly it required more trim and fitment time to install, if you have a good grinding tool or hand file set it will really help. The door slides easily in place without binding. It does flex just enough that if someone wanted to enter the house from outside with it closed they could open it. But it is not meant as a security device just to prevent kids and animals from getting out which it does well. It looks great installed, very flush to the door, seals out the drafts really well. All of my dogs including my small pug size mixed breed has no problems going in and out the door. I still need to seal the outside but I'm glad I bought this door.YaheeTech

This was definitely an overdue purchase. We have been propping the basement door open with a shoe for months in the new house for the cat to run down to do his business and it finally came time to close the door (when the cat would come upstairs he would nudge the door fully open because he was too fat to sneak through the gap). My husband said it was easy to put in. My only issues with this product are (1) the flap doesn't swing a easily as i would like and our cat kind of has to put a little effort in to opening it (I'm sure this will ease as he uses it more) and (2) the lever at the bottom to lock it is very stiff and I feel like I'm going to break it one of these days. With those only two VERY minor things I would surely suggest this to anyone. Also, my cat is definitely not HUGE (12 lbs, i think) and he seems to be just the perfect size for this product. It does leave room for him to grow wider if that happens but I'm so glad we went bigger rather than smaller.kandrwild

It wasn’t till I saw the warning on the box that I was aware the door insert was not compatible with my vinyl door. However, I found it was not difficult to adapt it. I would not have ordered it if the warnings on the box were as stressed on the on-line ad. At the same time I’m happy I bought it, as it is securely in place, is of high quality and the price made it a bargain.LFritz

This is a well made pet door. However, you will find it difficult to get a good seal with your existing slider. I had to buy additional weather stripping to put on each side of the pet door. I bought this for my kitties and took awhile for them to using the flap to exit because of the strong magnet at the bottom of the flap.Diane

But not together at the same time…let me finish. So I have a wonderful rotund cat but I don't let her out, so no go for her. However, If you have a portable A/C and need a way to expunge the hot air though a sliding glass door, here you go. Just put the robot arm through and you're good. The only other thing I added was weather stripping on both sides, so I'd have some padding between the door and frame. Lastly, I just balled up some rags to seal between the square cat flap and round A/C hose. So, as a cat door, yeah it seems solid. easy to adjust and strong enough to not give up. Dog loves it but presentation is misleading. It does not show that it needs to be plugged into a power supply or you need to purchase an additional battery pack. But after spending the additional hundred dollars for the battery pack it allows the dog to easily go in and out, but remember to change the battery out every two weeks or the dog will get locked outside in the middle of the nightCelestecatcrazy

Learn from my mistake and run far away!!! This door was somewhat convenient when first installed, but I quickly found that the transmitter didn't always work, which left my dog inside or outside at times. However, with the first hard rain, this door became a disaster. The door flap leaked water all over my floor, both under the flap and down through the body of the dog door. I didn't discover the flooding until a large puddle had developed, warping and splintering my hardwood. I spent two hours on my knees mopping with towels and trying to seal things with duct tape as the rain continued to flood in under the flap opening. When I called the company, I was told that, since the door had been purchased over 90 days prior, that "the credit card company won't let us do a refund so we can't" (obvious untruth) and that the owner would only let me return it for store credit. They had no interest in finding out what the problem/defect was and trying to cure it or change it so as not to do this to other consumers. I'm was already out the cost of the purchase, hiring a contractor, and having it installed, and now I have to buy a new door and have it put in, as well as repairing my cupped, splintering flooring. Do they really think I'd want to have store credit to buy another one? This failed experiment has cost me well over $1000 so far. The door itself works great and at first all was good. Unfortunately the door only works with the collar which is junk and even after you buy their expensive batteries will not work because it is junk. Honestly the first time your dog gets the collar a little wet, for example running through sprinklers it will stop working. Do not buy.aaron.brown03

I moved houses and had a door just like this. I wanted the same type of swinging doors instead of flaps so I got the exact model that I had before. My dogs were used to it and it is a very good quality door. The first one we had was mounted on an exterior door. The new one is mounted on an exterior wall, and leads right into the dog run. Our old house had a plastic dog door and that was how we used to break in when locked out. It was so easy, and therefore easy for a burglar to break in, so we made the investment in this door mainly for security reasons. NOTE: Once we received our large Plexidor my 6ft 170lbs butt could crawl through it, therefore, if not locked so could anyone else. So when you leave for vacation…lock it. It secures fairly well. Installation: You will install the door side on the inside which leaves the recessed portion facing the exterior -making it really obvious that you have a dog door. My remedy is to build & place a dog house on the exterior side of the door; so no-one would ever see or know the dog door exists! It simply looks like the dog is going in & out of his dog house! Plus it could act as a "mud" room to help clean their paws before going into the house. I actually choose to install ours into the garage, especially after the first rain when I saw all of the wet paw prints all the floor from my 80lb black lab. I don't know how people keep the floors clean when installed into a living room? Since this is our third purchase, we obviously love this product. It is so nice to not have to let our dogs out and in several times during the day. The more dogs you have the better. We have twenty Magnador pet doors in use. We tried other doors but they were destroyed within a week. Another kennel owner recommended the Magnador. she used them exclusively and suggested we also use them. I had to replace five of them last year and five more of them last month.
