This took my husband and I about a couple of evenings to install. You bury the lead wire around the perimeter you don't want your fur baby to cross and the collar is light and works nicely! I have a jack Russel/Chihuahua that likes to snoop and sneak out of the yard and this little device has solved that problem. I only needed to use the tone mode and that worked fabulously. I bought an additional collar for my blue heeler. She is a bit more strong willed and faster, so static mode worked for her. I'm thankful for this! I installed this fence for my dog on a town lot that was around .25 acres. I must say you should definitely read the instructions fully before just starting this installation as you have to do some prep work, and this is not simply a plug and play fence if you want to trench it in. I think if there was an existing fence or something you could probably get away with just hanging the boundary wires directly to it but chances are that is not the case always. In my case I used a spade to kinda make the trench on my laid-out boundary line. I did this after a heavy rain as that made the task by hand much easier than the ground being rock hard like it is when it is dry. I stepped on the ground with my body weight after the installing the wire to kind of tamp the ground back in place and let mother nature do the rest over time to get the ground to settle. I did have to cross my driveway and really just shoved the wire in the expansion joint and shoved it down as far as I could. I just have to be conscience that I do not pierce the wiring when doing my edging. For my lot it took quite a bit of the 500 feet of included wire even though I consider it to be a pretty small lot. My dog has used wireless electric collars before so the training was not so difficult, but I did put out the included flags on the boundary line during training to make sure the boundary training went smoothly. The collar fit my dog nicely. As far as hooking up the boundary lines to the transmitter it was easy. I installed the plug-in wall unit in my garage and actually drilled a hole through a brick wall to get the boundary wire outside. I used caulk to seal off the hole with the wire to protect the weather and critters getting into my garage through the access hole. As I mentioned that since I have used wireless systems with my dog before the training was minimal and the system is working nicely.Country Man
We do not have a fence in our backyard and have to constantly leave our Poodle on a 30 foot leash when she runs around backyard. But I hate that she is even on a leash and can't run and live free. I have a 2 yr old LARGE French Mastiff that weighs 180ish! I bought with the (red in color) “stubborn” collar. We previously installed a wired underground fence. (Which I have to mention took 2 FULL DAYS TO INSTALL AND READY TO USE!!) My Bo would realize he was close to the boundary, take a step or two back then take a run right through it, with no second thought!!! We watched him do this several times. I guess he was thinking, well this is going to hurt but only for a few short seconds. Idk?? But it did NOT phase him one bit! I had talked to 4 or 5 people that had this system, so reluctantly I decided to give it a try. I thought to myself well if it doesn’t work I will simply return it, no harm no foul. My boyfriend had it installed and collar on Bo in 30 mins flat. We walked ole hard-headed Bo around maybe 4 times to show him the boundaries. Once he heard the beeping, he kept walking then he felt the shock 1 time and that must have been enough because he never ventured close again! It has been about 2 months of use and I would give it 100 STARS IF IT WAS AN OPTION! We live in a subdivision where houses are fairly close. I was ultimately worried that the zone would lead into the neighboring yard. (which was the #1 thing we are trying to prevent) And although it may, Bo doesn’t even attempt to go that far. I believe he now understands to stay in his own yard! Living in a subdivision, many people take walks and Bo just sits and watches them now!! Matter of fact, just to see, we have sent him outside WITHOUT the collar and ironically enough HE STAYS IN OUR YARD!! The ONLY complaint I have is the small clear piece on the collar broke off the first time I went to adjust the strength of the shock. So far it hasn’t effected anything so fingers crossed on that! Just an FYI, we set ours on a level 3 to begin with and my boyfriend was ready to give up, so I told him to have some patience and we just kept adjusting the level on the collar and we ended up discovering for Bo he needed to be set on a #6. Again, I repeat he weighs 180 lbs, and the Mastiff bread is KNOWN for their stubbornness. I would suggest starting at the lowest level for a smaller dog PLEASE! I've been looking for a while to find a gate that would fit my space. I have a 66in opening. They all look great then you read the specs. 4 panels that are 28in wide. Well that wont work. I bought this gate to confine my dog in the kitchen which has a large open doorway. It fit well into the space and looked nice. Installation was pretty easy although I had to screw into drywall so if I were keeping the gate I would need to purchase anchors for the screws to ensure stability. For the most part this gate was just what I expected and I was initially happy with my purchase although the door was sometimes difficult to open with one hand. Unfortunately I have an incredibly agile dog and within a day of the gate being up she figured out that she could easily jump right over it. I love everything about this dog pen, except that one of the panels was missing the upper hinge. I did not want the hassle and wastefulness of returning the entire large and heavy item. I tried to see if I could just get a single replacement panel, but I don't know how to do that. I have used this to host puppy playdates over 2 years. Cannot be happier with purchase. My front yard is not completely fenced; There was a need to fence off, but not permanently as we use front yard for other purposes. Fences are flexible, can be set up in any figures as needed. I bought this as a last resort and man how i wish id bought it first. We have 3 dogs. 1 a very pigheaded pitbull ( 18 mo) that likes to test us at every turn. 1 German Shepard (4 mo) who is way to smart for anyone's good as she can open all our doors and gates. And 1 Cane Corso Doberman mix pup so far he's a good pup but he's only 7 weeks old. We have tried everything to keep the other two in ( 8 ft chain link. Hot wire. Adding an inward incline at the top. Burying the fence.) but they always found a way out. We installed this fence 3 days ago in about 2 hours and have already introduced the dogs to it. Our gsd is already steering well clear of it. Our pit on the other hand is being more stubborn about it his color is is set at max and he is still trying to run through tho he bring himself back inside the barrier very fast once he crosses it. I installed this system about 2 weeks ago and, have done some light training. I first tried the wireless system but, it had issues with coverage and dead spots in my yard. I have a miniature Daschund and I have found that she quickly learned the boundaries almost to the point of being gunshy of going out into the yard. Probably my fault. The other system zapped her a few times and, now I'm going to have to back off and work into it more slowly. We had a problem of her running off and paying absolutely no attention what so ever to our calls, scolding or going after her. Very frustrating, and dangerous to her going across the street not to mention also my wife and I get very tired having to go after her!!!!! At this point with only the audio she will NOT cross the boundary wire! Good for us and safer for her! Right now she has a problem with going out in the yard but, in time and as we work with her I'm sure she will regain her confidence. The system was fairly easy to install, took me about a day to do it right. Toughest part I had was going across the 24ft driveway, several years ago I put caulking in the expansion joints and it was pretty tough to clean it out. Had to go about 6" at a time. I did mine above ground and, I did opt for 14ga wire, the 20ga that came with the system was way to flimsy. My choice because I like to do things thoroughly with no problems when I'm done. Used almost 500ft of wire and about 160 yard Staples. Barely visible and I can mow over it with no problem. I think this system will do the job for what it is intended to do and way less expensive than having a fence put up. I didn't want to fence in my whole property at all. Just going to have to work more with the dog and, after awhile I'm sure she will feel at ease with going out in the yard. My review is on the Basic In-Ground Fence System by Pet Safe. This in ground fence system worked great for our little dog. The directions are well written and easy to follow. They offer several options for installation, in ground, above ground, with a fence, and around your garden and the trees. They are thorough and easy to follow. After installing the unit, I tested it following the instructions, and everything was working. There are 5 levels of electric stimulus. The collars are fully adjustable for the shock level, and the controller adjusts the distance the collar starts to activate. The collar has a separate adjustment for the level of shock; 1-5. The wall controller adjusts the width of the zone, 2' wide to 10' wide. If your collar is one level 1 (low) and the width is at 10 (maximum), your dog will not get a shock, only a low level beep. You have to adjust the collar to 5 (high) to train the dog the first time. One or two zaps and the dog will learn to associate the warning beep with the zap. Then you adjust the shock level down to 2 or 3 for most dogs. I have read that dogs need a visual barrier, they won't remember the wire is buried, once they associate the visual barrier with the electric fence, they know it is there. I would recommend this in ground fence for your dogs to be able to run around the yard.Rose28

I love everything about this dog pen, except that one of the panels was missing the upper hinge. I did not want the hassle and wastefulness of returning the entire large and heavy item. I tried to see if I could just get a single replacement panel, but I don't know how to do that. I guess I will just keep it and only use 7 of the panels *Sigh* (If anyone can get a single panel replacement – please let me know!) The raised gate is perfect for not rubbing on the floor and scratching it up. the panels are not too heavy I could construct the pen easily. Our dog has a thing with getting up on our cupboards so we decided to get this to try and see if it would keep him off. I have to say the results are amazing. We put the wire on the edge of our cupboards and ran it along to the plug. The installation was very easy. I have to say it is working flawlessly.The first night we heard a yelp in the middle of the night, assuming he got shocked and some of our food from the cupboard was on the floor but by day 3 he learned his lesson and did not get on the cupboards. It is so awesome to be able to leave our bread on the cubpoards and not have to worry about the dog getting to it (our dog loves bread). We will be leaving it ont the cupboards for about a month just to make sure he doesnt get on it and then we will be putting it outside in the front yard to keep him in the yard. I love that we can use this without having to put in an actual fence. I love how this comes with everything you need and that it is rechargable. Its great quality and works perfctly. This fence works great, but it was finicky to set up. The wires have to be inserted just the right distance, but not too far or the box thought the wire loop was broken. It took us a while to figure that out. In the process the spring popped out of one of the wire clamps so it was useless, but we found the spring and my husband was able to fix it. I really wish there was just a screw we could wrap the wire around and tighten, which would feel much more stable. Everytime we moved the thing, the wires popped out, up till we got it into it's final resting space. We're a little worried the box will get bumped and a wires will come loose again. I will say that when we thought the device wasn't working, the PetSafe team replied to my e-mail within minutes, and on a Sunday. I was super impressed with the fast customer support. We've been using it for almost 2 weeks, counting training time, and our hound foster now stops about 8 feet from the fence he was previously jumping, which is about when he should be hearing the beep. We keep the collar next to the back door and turned off, unless we're putting the dog out. We haven't needed to charge it yet.Erin M
After being in our new home for around two months now and finally had a weekend free my husband and I decided to set up the inground fence. We have one femal dog roughly around 65 lbs that is fairly obedient and really just loves going outside between early morning and late evening. This kit comes nicely packaged with instructions and seems fairly understandable to figure out. You can also look up any trouble shooting online which I highly recommend along with training your dog before hand as that plays an important roll. It comes with everything needed to get started and you can purchase an extra collar or wire on line per animal if needed. I'm really only focusing on my backyard so this is more than enough to get me started as were literally going along the yard with no trees or bushes in the way. It also states that you can place it to an existing fence which I thought was pretty nice. I suggest two people working together as one digs and the other places the wire in the ground behind them. We layed the wire on top of the ground to determine were we wanted it to be and make any last adjustments before we started and we were able to finished in a day and a half with my son helping us towards the end. My husband took care of hooking the wire up and let me place the collar on our dog. We started out slowly and she did really good but started to follow her dad around front while on setting one which is just the tone so we went back and read directions and realized our mistake. We will start at two and up it one at a time during the next few weeks till she gets the concept and doesn't do it again. I can tell you at two when we first tried I don't know what she thought but it did take her by surprise and wasn't something she was use to so I think shes realizing not to go past the flag zone. The good thing is it's enough to startle her but without harming her or make her hate me. I'm still in the training mode and with her being an older dog I'm going a little slower since she gets so scared easily. This is going to be nice letting her out while I'm getting ready in the morning and giving her more room to roam and come back in on her time. One good thing to is thankfully we have a window that we can run the wire through at the corner to connect to the transmitter since it has to be connected indoors. The fence transmitter has a piece that's slides off so you can screw to the wall. Overall we made a few simple mistakes but it was fairly easy to set up and I feel better knowing she can enjoy the outdoors having more space to sniff and not run off! We have a very active Standard Poodle who loves to chase our chickens and run like the wind. Even though we live on 15 acres, we had to keep her on a lease at all times. I was terrified she would get lost or hit by a car. And training her while leashed was not working. We fenced in about 4 acres. She was trained to it in under a week. We now almost forget what life was like before the fence. The stress relief we feel has been life changing. And our beautiful, sweet, sassy pooch is so happy every day. She gets to run like the wind, chase squirrels, hunt mice in the wood piles, and play fetch to her little heart’s content. We have had no issues with the collar like some reviewers have stated and it’s been about 9 months. Putting it in wasn’t bad either. We rented a trench digger and had it all done in a weekend. We bought this system a few years ago after our old system died and was no longer available. We have two dogs, so had to purchase a second collar at almost half the cost of the system price. One collar died within the first year and a second collar broke less than two years after purchasing the replacement. Always the same issue – the pins where the charger plugs in. They break off easily just through normal use. And now….the replacement collars are not available anymore (always "out of stock"). If I have to purchase a whole new system again I will not be happy and will probably look at a different brand.DRickard418
We use the YardMax system at two houses. We simply transport the transmitter and power supply back and forth between the two locations. We used a combination of wire installations: (1) on top of the soil in low traffic areas, (2) buried under an inch or two of soil in high traffic areas, (3) buried w/in long sections of PVC under the gravel driveways, (4) tucked into the expansion cut of a concrete slab sidewalk then sealed with cement silicon sealant, (5) strung along the base of fences, and (6) buried amongst the gravel, stones and rocks of stream bed in a fast running creek. My spouse and I followed the training instructions to the letter, yet accelerated the pace to include three trainings the first day, then two the second day and our lab was trained. However, it took nearly six months before we could get him to follow us through the established "safe passage way" of in-ground fence to leave the property. Until then we had to load him into the car, and drive out of the driveway, then let him out of the car. We followed all of the instructions to set up the safe passage though the gate, or driveway, etc. without luck. We were finally successful by using the following combination of ideas: (1) making a HUGE event of taking the collar off, (2) letting him smell it and lick it, (3) showing him the leash and the retrieving toys that we planned to use when we exited the yard, and (4) setting the collar and receiver within the cargo area of the open hatch of the car. Now as soon as we take the collar off and grab a toy or leash he is willing to cross the fence at any location. He will not cross the fence linew/out us. Use caution if you have an active swimmer. Either double check that the rubber cover on the receiver is securely fixed or remove the collar altogether. (See my review of the YardMax® Rechargeable In-Ground Fence™ Receiver Collar SKU# PIG00-11116.) I recommend highly recommend the Yard Max system. I wish the receiver was fully sealed. I installed this system about 2 weeks ago and, have done some light training. I first tried the wireless system but, it had issues with coverage and dead spots in my yard. I have a miniature Daschund and I have found that she quickly learned the boundaries almost to the point of being gunshy of going out into the yard. Probably my fault. The other system zapped her a few times and, now I'm going to have to back off and work into it more slowly. We had a problem of her running off and paying absolutely no attention what so ever to our calls, scolding or going after her. Very frustrating, and dangerous to her going across the street not to mention also my wife and I get very tired having to go after her!!!!! At this point with only the audio she will NOT cross the boundary wire! Good for us and safer for her! Right now she has a problem with going out in the yard but, in time and as we work with her I'm sure she will regain her confidence. The system was fairly easy to install, took me about a day to do it right. Toughest part I had was going across the 24ft driveway, several years ago I put caulking in the expansion joints and it was pretty tough to clean it out. Had to go about 6" at a time. I did mine above ground and, I did opt for 14ga wire, the 20ga that came with the system was way to flimsy. My choice because I like to do things thoroughly with no problems when I'm done. Used almost 500ft of wire and about 160 yard Staples. Barely visible and I can mow over it with no problem. I think this system will do the job for what it is intended to do and way less expensive than having a fence put up. I didn't want to fence in my whole property at all. Just going to have to work more with the dog and, after awhile I'm sure she will feel at ease with going out in the yard. My wife and I will not have to worry about her running off and being injured when we are outside working or relaxing in our patio or deck. Pet Safe is what it means and what it will provide. My review is on the Basic In-Ground Fence System by Pet Safe. This in ground fence system worked great for our little dog. The directions are well written and easy to follow. They offer several options for installation, in ground, above ground, with a fence, and around your garden and the trees. They are thorough and easy to follow. After installing the unit, I tested it following the instructions, and everything was working. There are 5 levels of electric stimulus. The collars are fully adjustable for the shock level, and the controller adjusts the distance the collar starts to activate. The collar has a separate adjustment for the level of shock; 1-5. The wall controller adjusts the width of the zone, 2' wide to 10' wide. If your collar is one level 1 (low) and the width is at 10 (maximum), your dog will not get a shock, only a low level beep. You have to adjust the collar to 5 (high) to train the dog the first time. One or two zaps and the dog will learn to associate the warning beep with the zap. Then you adjust the shock level down to 2 or 3 for most dogs. I have read that dogs need a visual barrier, they won't remember the wire is buried, once they associate the visual barrier with the electric fence, they know it is there. I would recommend this in ground fence for your dogs to be able to run around the yard.Rose28

We recently got a new Bernese Mountain dog puppy and we have a 7 year old Dachshund mix who we rescued 4 years ago. I received the kit very quickly through the mail. The instructions were pretty simple and I was able to run the cable around the perimeter of my property very quickly for testing it out. Our puppy got corrected about three times before he truly figured it out and learned to stay away from the perimeter. Our Dachshund, who is known for bolting as soon as the door opens, didn't take to it as quickly. "Can't teach an old dog new tricks?" That was not the case. After she ran through the fence a few times, she was scared to go outside at all. Being a rescue from an abused family, this is understandable. After working with her for a week, showing her the boundaries with the shock correction turned off just utilizing the audible correction and the vibration alert, She started to get comfortable outside again and also stayed away from the perimeter. The beep and vibration was enough to get her attention and she returns into the property. At this time, I spent half a day with a spade shovel and buried the fence a couple inches into the ground. I found that the signal was a bit less, so I took advantage of the signal strength dial and turned it up and tested it again. It took a bit of trial and error, but I got it dialed in pretty good. This has been an absolutely fantastic device for the dogs. They can go outside and run around like a dog should be able to do! Now I just have to figure out how to stop my Dachshund from digging up critters around my AC unit, LOL. I think I am going to build a decorative fence around my unit for this. I purchased this system about three years ago. It worked great for my GSD for about two months.. then he learned he could run through it.. and did so on a regular basis. If you have smaller dogs.. would highly recommend this fence system.. for bigger dogs… Not so much. Oh and i recently acquired a Caucaision Ovcharcta… she is now 8 months old and goes through it like it wasn't there. For me it was a waste of money. I have two pit bulls and a bull terrier. I bought this in hopes it will keep the dogs in the yard without a physical fence. At first the dogs were very scared to go outside but after a little training and some play time in the yard they have learned their boundary. Be sure to not adjust the width control while the dogs are wearing the collar they may get an unexpected shock. Be sure to read the instructions and then read them again before trying it on the pets. Show them the boundary on level one which is just a vibration and a beep.Then set it to level two which is the lowest shock. I would give zero if it was an option. The signal only works when the collar is touching the wire. It went through the test phase totally fine, and so I proceeded to bury 500 feet of wire, only for it not to work. This fence is awsome. Works great even with my wooded yard. Took my dog only a few days to figure out where his boundaries are and I don't have to worry about him running off to the neighbors.
