Unfortunately, I am still on the hunt for a good harness to use for running with my dog. The harness rubbed under his armpits and rubbed them raw. The look of the harness is great however the material cannot stand up to chewing which is not covered under warranty. I bought one yesterday and this morning I left to get breakfast and when I got back 20 minutes later he had chewed through one of the straps and had taken a chuck out of the nylon canvas chest piece. Very disappointed in the product and was hoping it was made better and would hold up for years like their jackets have.Brady

To begin with; our pooch is a tall & lean 92lb Catahoula mix with a deep chest. He's a big boy, but I'd not say especially long. I mention the legnth because the XL Carhartt jacket isn't long enough… stopping 3" short of our Catahoula's tail. Despite his deep chest, the lower straps are at least 4" too long & must be overlapped with more than 2" protruding on both sides. The front strap is also a bit too long but less than 2". The Velcro holds well but we've only used the jacket a few times so far – I've read less than positive reviews about the Velcro not holding up past a year – a buckle would be nice (& we may add this). The jacket is rather stiff & when our dog turns or manuvers, the rear portion swings out a little left/right (like a hoop skirt) away from the ribcage, leaving the rump exposed, but this isn't a big deal & the stiffness will probably relax somewhat after repeated use &/or a wash. There's no opening for a harness, but an opening could be cut & nicely stitched pretty easily – we're going to do this. Having said all that we do like the jacket – it's made of tough Carhartt fabric (VERY important for adventurous doggies!), it stays in place even during vigorous rabbit chases through deep brush & offers very good protection… keeping in mind there's NO coverage underneath. We plan to get an additional "sweater" type garment to be worn as a base layer on colder days.Catahoulas are awesome
We have 2 dobermans and live in a very rural, snowy area. They play/wrestle constantly and they shredded through 4-5 coats due to their playing. We finally found the Carhartt Dog Chore coat and they've lasted 2 years now. I would've given this product 5 Stars, but there are 2 issues I can't ignore: 1) One dog is 65lbs and the Large size is a little small on her (because, as a Doberman, she has a huge ribcage). Our other dog is 85lbs and the XL is huge on him. So the fit range seems to be inconsistent. 2) The velcro lost most of its grip after the first year. Also, the stitching holding the velcro on is coming out. We need to use rubber bands to keep the coat strapped on. All that said, this is still the most functional and durable dog coat we've found.DougP
I have two dogs, a sm/md hound and a thin, barrel chested md sheppard. Sadly, I haven't actually found anything that fits my sheppard properly and thats the case here, medium is too small and large she swims in. So this review is for the hound. He is a perfect fit in a medium and I believe he weighs around 33-36lbs. The girls at the coffee stands absolutely think he is adorable, which is true. I love the jacket and so does he. but what is frustrating is the velcro straps have worn out in about 4 months of heavy use. I do believe thats partly on my end because they really are hard on jackets and harnesses. That said, I wish the jackets included two brass buttons or snaps in additon to the velcro to help prevent snags ripping the straps apart when they play and run in the forest. If you are not going to use this every day, or the dogs are not 2 and 3 years old at the dog park multiple times a week, like mine, I fully recommend this jacket. It is great, it just isn't up to real heavy, rough use for more than a few months. The teeth of the velco just start to pull out over time and then there are not enough left to hold it seccure. I will buy again, but im a little bummed about it. the jacket has a nice patina to it… there should also be an access hole for a harness loop to pass through, but there isn't. We have a very active chocolate lab and this harness fits well and works like a dream. Front-attach harnesses work to destabilize the dog so you are not in a tug of war. Everyone we have suggested this harness to is a believer because it makes walking the dog less of a battle. First of all, the chore coat is fantastic, I highly recommend that Carhartt dog jacket. It’s made of a little stiffer material, but it wears so much better. The only challenge with that one is that the Velcro fails after 3-4 months. This one, despite being more expensive is ok as long as your dog stays on leash and you don’t subject it to any abuse in the brush at all. I’ve had mine for a week and the reflective tape began peeling after the first hour. My dog is quite active and runs through the brush and this coat snagged constantly and tore. The latest is that the stitching around the collar came undone. Attaching some pictures and keep in mind that this is after a week.Steve D

Buckle that holds the collar closed is cheaply made. Used it to take my dog for a walk and after a couple of pulls the collar came right apart. Put it back on and soon after the same thing happened. With the collar off the dog you can simply pull the two ends apart in your hands. This product is just for show, not for use.Jenn
While I love the look of this collar, the clasp design is very unreliable. While the outer receptacle of the claps is metal, the inside is plastic. It's very week, and the collar flies off with the slightest pull. Sometimes it flies off of my Doberman when she barks with some spirit. If the clasp was made with metal on both pieces, I suspect it would work better.Gabrielle

I was really excited when I saw this because my dog is hard on toys – Carhartt using their tough pedigree to create durable dog toys? It sounded too good to be true. Sadly, it was. My dog had punctured a hole in the brown part of the toy where the handle connects to the orange part in under ten minutes. Those holes are expanding and I don't think that this is going to last much longer. There seems to be something inside that she is drawn too because she keeps working on a particular spot and treats this almost like one of her bones that she chews. She'll cuddle up with it and gnaw on that one spot now. It's kind of strange. She doesn't do that with any of her other toys. Just her bones. Anyway, the orange nylon part seems plenty durable and if more of the toy was made of that I think it would be tougher. The handle is nice but both and dog and I seem to want to hold that part when we play. I hope that they refine this design and come out with something better because it really is an interesting idea overall and I would buy it again if it was better designed and actually bombproof.Ben

This leash has unclipped a few times from the matching collar I bought my dog. The first 2 times I thought I had incorrectly clasped it, however after walking more then half a mile with my dog in a training session I am confident that the leash was clipped correctly. My dog pulled at a bird and the leash came unclipped, leaving me to try and find my dog for more then an hour.. Not sure this is a very safe or reliable product..Lochlann
So dangerous. The clasp has come off multiple times and lead my dog to run off on the road. He’s a young pup so he’s in training and this is absolutely ridiculous! You think you’d have better quality clasp control since the leash was double the price of regular leashes. Very upset about this as it continues to occur. Also only had the leash for a couple months and it’s faded/tearing. Not impressed AT ALL. Will be throwing this leash out to prevent from further scares.Julia

First, like someone else mentioned in the review. The harness attracts heat, it can easily overheat a dog in the warm summer days. I would recommend designing the harness so it has cooling pads. I love the front leash loop, I wish more of the ruffwear harnesses had both back and front loops. This harness is better in the winter months, I would not recommend wearing this harness during hotter days during the summer. My dog is an escape artist, has gotten away from several harnesses and collars, including several ruffwears harnesses until I found this harness. The three straps works wonders, she can't figure out how to get out of this harness and she hasn't yet. Only problem is that this harness can get super hot and the second problem is that the front padding is not really doing it's job. The adjustments are hidden and the front padding covers it up, however it feels like a rock and it puts pressure on the dogs chest if using back loop clip. I only use the front loop clip leash attachment which prevents any damage to the chest. I hope this helps, hopefully you can design a new version of this harness, I think all your customers would appreciate it 🙂 Overall, I would still recommend this product, though it does has it's flaws I purchased this harness from REI, so it may not say that the review is verified. I purchased the Switchbak primarily for hiking but ended up using it for Search & Rescue training. I really wouldn’t recommend it for either for a number of reasons. First off, the top is heavily padded and holds in body heat. The padding is totally unnecessary and an overheated dog in the back country can be pretty serious. Second, the pockets are almost useless unless they have equal amounts of weight on each side. I don’t load my dog with weight but just the weight of a 2’ leash in one pocket is enough to cause the harness to twist. Third, the D-ring placement is totally inadequate for a trailing dog. It’s too far forward and it causes the lead to get caught on the dog’s rear legs when making turns while trailing. In my opinion, the people designing these harnesses either lack experience handling working dogs or simply did not think through the design of the product. Unfortunately, this seems to be an issue across the Ruffwear line.Justin
Let me start out by saying that I love walking…I mean its kinda my stick, and since my dogs love sticks, (numerous can be found while walking), its a win-win; however, what isn’t so fun is carrying all the stuff required on a hot summer day, while walking or riding my bike. Bottled water, poopie bags, used poopie bags…don’t you love that left over poopie bag smell. No matter where I put the bag, there is always a little residual smell, and although the leashes I bought have a place to tie them after use, the feeling of a cold poop filled bag slapping against my waist as I walk….annoying to say the least. So, giving my dog pockets was the best solution…carry your own poop! The bag is not huge at all, so if you are a hiker and want your dog to carry some weight, this is not the tool for you. What it can carry is two water bladders (one on each side) with about 16oz of water each, a poopie bag roll, and one or two full poopie bags (as the water bladders empty). I have even had my girl carry my phone when both water bladders were not necessary. This is the maximum though. The side pockets do not expand, so the more you shove in there, the more the harness will stick out away from the dogs body. I will also add that my dog has issues with a lot of harnesses rubbing away her fur. I first ordered the Front Range harness for my Great Pyrenees and Lab. It worked well for the Pyrenees, but with the lab it rubbed away a huge patch of fur on her chest and even started to get little scabs. I then exchanged it for this harness, and her hair has completely grown back with no additional rubbing anywhere else. I only wish it came in pink, as everyone thinks she is a boy, but I thought the blue was the best looking color. Thank you again Ruffwear!Brittney K.

Sizes are a lot smaller than other Barbour dog products. After reading reviews indicating that sizes are smaller I purchased a medium instead of the usual small for my 6 month old french bulldog, it still did not fit. I sent the medium back and ordered a large which fits great, but there is no way a 6 month old french bulldog is a large in any dog wear. Ranger my mini-Aussie got to try this gear out on a hike in the mountains of NC. Sizing seemed to be good and after 3 days I didn’t see any areas where it was rubbing. The handles on the top allowed me to pull him out of a creek when he fell in off a down tree we were using to cross. There are some reflective areas which made him easy to find around camp at night. My only suggestion would be to have the option for hunter orange as a color.Brian34
I love the look and fit of this Harness. My dog is a 38lb terrier mix that can be a little hard to fit for harnesses because of his shape. A lot of harnesses rub his armpits, this harness fits him great. I used the measurement guide and chose a medium, it fits great. I followed the sizing guide on the website to get this harness for my mastiff/lab cross. He is more the size of a lab than a mastiff but ended up getting the largest one. He LOVES it and knows it’s hike time when we brake it out. We just bought a first aid kit and a pannier for it as well. If you attach it through the two loops, as I suspect they are supposed to be, they lay on his back NOT his sides. If you attach them to just the bottom loop they sit on his sides kind off BUT as soon as he starts moving the entire harness turns sideways and he has the first aid kit on his back and the pannier on his belly. Also there is LOTS of area’s kind of shredding, lots of stringer threads hanging from everywhere. We will be trying to return this item this week. Another problem is the snaps pop off the pannier and first aid kit when the dog brushes against anything. I thought there would be velcro on them, as there is tons of Velcro on the harness, but there is none.Dorkside
