We've used this collar for a few weeks and have definitely seen improvement. When our 130 lb Asian Shepherd tries to lunge at a passing car we simply put tension on the leash and she stops. We have tried every type of no-pill harness out there, and had given up. When I went to my locally owned pet shop to buy a new collar for my girl, I saw this harness and decided to give it a go. What a difference. She didn’t like it at first, but it only took a couple of days for her to stop pawing at it. Fitting the harness was so easy as is putting on for a walk. It’s very lightweight, and with the additional padding on the nose loop combined with the heat-cut ends of the straps being sewn so that they do not touch her fur means no chafing and no sore spots. I can’t remember exactly what year we would have gotten our first gentle leader, but I’ll always remember the doggo we got it for and what a life changer it was!! He was 120 pounds of pure muscle and we.had.tried.everything. Group training, private training, and all the types of collars I would never use today even if I didn’t have this amazing option (choke, pinch, shock…). Our vet had even recommended having a horse halter made for him. And then a friend suggested a gentle leader. Overnight, we went from dreading the walk and only taking them when the strongest in the family was available, to myself, the kids and even my parents being able to EASILY, with one hand and no strength required, walk this dog who literally dragged me across a soccer field once when I slid on wet grass but didn’t want to let go of his leash. It was probably right around twenty years ago, and sadly Bear has long ago been to the rainbow bridge. But we’ve had a few other large, strong pullers since and thankfully we knew from the beginning how to make walks fun and bearable for everyone. I only wish it hadn’t taken SO long for there to be some collars with a little design and color other than the same solid colors for so many years. And I can’t lie, I sure wish there were more choices than there are. But thankfully the gentle leader is still available. I really like the PetSafe – Gentle Leader® Headcollar, in size Medium. At first I was a little skeptical that this might actually help when we take our 8 month old puppy on walks because all she wants to do constantly is stop, and smell everything. We were using a harness on her, but after trying out the Gentle Leader, it works so much better that my husband and I were amazed. The Leader is very simple, goes on easily, and there is a little loop that goes through a ring that you bring up, and it goes around the very top of your dogs nose. This is to help lease train them better so that with just a little tug, it brings your dogs head up, and in our dogs case, it stops her from smelling every little thing on her walks. It was like night and day! That's how impressed we were. At times she gives us a little snort when we give her a little gentle tug on the leash to keep her head up, but it really seems to be working, and the walks are so much more enjoyable now. The Gentle Leader Headcollar has helped me walk my senior dog more often. Living in a big city, it is common to run into other people also walking their dogs and mine would pull and pull every time he caught sight of another dog. Hence, the difficulty in walking him as often as I'd like to. The Gentle Leader came with clear instructions on how to put it on and use it which was very simple. At first, my dog didn't like wearing it, but it only took a few walks for him to get used to it and to my amazement – he stopped trying to pull completely! We have been able to go on many more enjoyable walks since using this headcollar and both me and my dog are very happy about it. This gentle lead took some getting used to and is still a work in progress. This was my first time trying this type of product, I typically go for harnesses. It is well made so I feel secure that it will hold up during many walks and not come loose/give out. There are large picture instructions that are a great help with sizing and how to properly put it on, along with describing how the fit should be so it is comfortable but won’t slip during use. The fit and use instructions are a great help especially for someone who has never used this type of lead before. I thought I'd give the puppy a chance with regular training methods (treats, praise, verbal corrections) before I started futzing with a special collar and have to buy it in two sizes. That was really stupid. I wish I would have bought it sooner and spent the money on the two sizes. I got this one in a size Medium and it fits perfectly with just an easy adjustment of the buckle. Our little man is a Labradoodle, now at about 32 lbs and expected to reach a 60-ish weight probably. He is VERY high energy, very strong and very smart, but our little darling is no longer little and I have been finding myself struggling with his 32 lb self pulling on the walks. I cannot imagine when he is full grown, so I decided finally to nip this in the bud and I ordered the gentle leader. It arrived today and I was amazed at how he has NO power to pull AT ALL. I am so glad I took the chance and purchased these for my adorable and INSANELY CRAZY JRTs.I have tried it all. Obedience lessons, vibrate collars, halters, treats… but JRTs are very independent minded and unless you spend THOUSANDS on training, forget it.I have disabilities so walking my beloved pups was a challenge most daysMy male is still adjusting. So I adopted a 3 year old pitty who had no training outside of “sit”. I use the Black Dog head halter and the Halti brand and they each have their merits. I work with a lot of dogs and use them interchanegably. The Black Dog one is less restrictive and allows the dog to pant (much better for big / anxious dogs especially in summer months) and it's more comfortable and bothers the dog less..the goal being that the dog only feels constructed when they are performing the wrong behaviour (eg leash pulling) but the downside is that if the leash is not connected to the loop, then the dog can chew it and destroy it in three seconds. The halti ones are closer to indestructible when worn , whether a lead is connected or not as they clip to the collar and are more restrictive. Saying that, the restriction limits how far their mouth can open. This again has its pros and cons – good for aggressive dogs as it's almost a partial muzzle – can't do much damage to other dogs when wearing them. If training is completed correctly with a head halter, doing stepping-up / trust building exercises and being very strict on head rubbing / pawing at mouth behaviours, then it's a very useful tool for certain dogs. But the goal of any head halter should be to not need it anymore. You should use it in conjunction with your voice etc so that the dog learns to listen to YOU and not the head halter itself. If you have a very feisty, pushy dog who is all over the place throwing a thousand behaviours out there in ten seconds then yes I recommend this behaviour as a starting tool to teach calm and connect with me. But otherwise Black dog all the way.
I have used the Halti brand for years. I first used one on a German shepherd dog which constantly pulled. It even developed a throat problem. Put it on a Halti and after 15 mins of protest she was great. She also accepted the halti and got excited when she saw it as she knew it was walk time. I now have a English cocker who is exactly the same, after months of trying to get her to walk correctly I fitted a halti and it is instant calmness. I have used cheaper alternatives on my German shepherd but they really do not fit the face of the dog correctly and when the dog pulls it twists their face and it must have been uncomfortable for the dog. But Halti product fits the face of the dog correctly and gives the dog no discomfort so its a good win for everyone including the dog.noxas123
These DO work well, full stop. HOWEVER, considering the ease of knockoff product availability, and probably cheap material using overesas labor, the price is questionable, ESPECIALLY since the metal rings wear through the nylon. It is not as bad with this exact design, but I think Coastal branded Halti headcolars have 2 more metal rings. If you ever have to go through a metal detector, the metal is an issue. BUT the added safety strap to clip to another collar or harness, which includes a metal spring clip is important for when the metal ring cuts through the nose-band. Also check the nose-band often as when the padding rubs away, your dog will get a rub. There is no safer collar than Premier's Martingale to use on new dogs in our rescue or for dogs going on a transport. I will not ship a dog on any transport without this collar. Traveling is stressful, even going to the vet is stressful for a country dog who finds itself in traffic after a ride in a strange vehicle. Regular collars often slip off the necks and heads of a frantic dog. This collar will not! When I get in new strays who don't have a clue what a collar is I can't risk them getting loose. Again, I depend on this collar for control and for the dog's safety. When I taught dog obedience in the Public sector, the Martingale and the Gentle Leader were the collars I sold to my students and they quickly had their dogs in control and training was swift while the dogs' neck's were protected. I have used the Premier Martingale since 2000. It is my basic collar of choice. Regular collars: I don't feel safe using them.
The functional design of this collar is beyond superior. However, it also has a feature (or lack thereof depending on how you look at it) that is extremely important to me that most people likely don't think about…..the amount of metal that comes in contact with my dog. You see, I live in AZ where the heat is extreme four months a year, even in the shade. When you can't wear sandals or sunglasses with any metal design features, hanging earrings that may brush your neck, and are always conscience of how close your bare leg is to those keys hanging from the ignition…….one thinks twice about what one puts around the beloved pet's neck (and paws). We have used this collar on our dog since we got her over 1 year ago. Today, while she was playing with another dog, the other dog got her jaw stuck in it. I knew about this product for several weeks, but I delayed in getting it. I thought I'd give the puppy a chance with regular training methods (treats, praise, verbal corrections) before I started futzing with a special collar and have to buy it in two sizes. That was really stupid. I wish I would have bought it sooner and spent the money on the two sizes. I got this one in a size Medium and it fits perfectly with just an easy adjustment of the buckle. Our little man is a Labradoodle, now at about 32 lbs and expected to reach a 60-ish weight probably. He is VERY high energy, very strong and very smart, but our little darling is no longer little and I have been finding myself struggling with his 32 lb self pulling on the walks. I cannot imagine when he is full grown, so I decided finally to nip this in the bud and I ordered the gentle leader. It arrived today and I was amazed at how he has NO power to pull AT ALL. I even noticed that in many situations like when he would normally lunge at something, he didn't, maybe that is just from the novelty and will eventually wear off, but for today, it was as if he had a total attitude adjustment. It was like magic. He is none too pleased about the new situation, for sure, but I am pleased as punch. Will take a few days of working with him to get used to it so he stops trying to pull it down with his paws, but even when he was trying he couldn't get it off successfully unless I let off on the tension to the leash altogether which I was able to correct for easily enough. I have an 18 month old standard poodle. I’ve had her since 9 weeks old. She’s full of energy and gets super excited. I’ve trained her well on a typical lead but I was having issues controlling her when she would get excited by people and animals. I have arthritis in my hands and wrists, I have shoulder problems as well. Every time I walked her I’d be in so much pain trying to pull her back. I have the best off-leash dog in the world. She is non-reactive to other dogs and always stays with me on hikes. She is a lab so loves to jump into creeks. I bought a RadDog collar when she was younger and she outgrew it and at the time it was the largest size they had so that was really disappointing. I used other types of similar idea collars but they all failed after a while (maybe because of swimming in the collar). Eventually I looked and was delighted to see a larger version and bought it so I'm thrilled to have my Luna wearing her RadDog collar again. It makes it so easy to grab her leash when we are passing other people and dogs on a hike – not because she will do anything but they don't know that – really just to be polite. And for areas where a leash is required, it at least looks like she is on leash 😉Jill G
We are on our third All-In-One collar/leash and think this is a fabulous product. The only reason we don't give it full stars is that it would be wonderful if the company would make it so that these could be repaired. It seems like a big waste to throw it all away when the line gets frayed and breaks…which has happened on each of the leashes that we've owned. Maybe the line should have a metal cable to make it more durable? Or there could be a send back in for repair option? Thanks otherwise for a very handy and useful invention!
Used this leash for the first time the other day, and love the idea behind this product. If you walk your dog off leash, you will love this product. No more having to worry about trying to leash your dog quickly when other people/animals pass. I do agree with a previous review. The wrist portion of the leash could be a little bigger, especially if you live somewhere cold and need gloves. Initially I thought the product might be too bulky, but it didn't bother my dog at all. Is this item a replacement for the RFA-577 model? The button on the training collar wore out and will not turn on the module anymore. I have gotten a solid two years out of the collar and I am very pleased with the results of responsible training for my dog. *Dominoe is a very well behaved dog and I am constantly getting compliments on his behavior. I learned about these collars in 2004, after I lost a puppy to a collar strangulation accident. I only wish I had known then what I know now. I have purchased many of these collars over the years and give them away to friends. Sometimes I will come home from work and find a collar in the yard and I know that collar just saved a life! One time I did find a collar-less dog at home and the ID tag on his breakaway collar was firmly wedged between 2 boards on my deck. That time I know that his life was saved by his breakaway collar. I am a true believer in these collars and a very strong advocate for them and for your company. When the dogs and I go out, they will wear harnesses with their leashes, but I have also walked them with the leash attached to both rings on the collar and they work just fine. I bought this caller after reading the story about Chinook the dog that died from choking on his collar. I immediately ordered this may be about a month ago. Yesterday we were at our big dog park in my 60 pound white mix Lily was playing with her same size Shepherd who likes to chew on collars and harnesses on her neck. I have three dachshunds. Before these collars were purchased, two of them were playing, when the lower teeth of one of them became intangibles in the other's collar. Both of them were trying to pull away and the dog was choking. She let out a squeal like I've never heard before. I was able to separate the two, but there was blood in her eyes. It was after hours, so we had to drive her to a 24-hour vet clinic an hour's drive away. She was okay, but after purchasing three of these collars, it has never been an issue again. Since we have a fenced in back yard, the collars work well. I have found one of them lying outside, but better to have a healthy dog that is safe from choking. If you have dogs that run loose, this could be an issue, but not for us. We're getting ready to purchase three replacements for all three of our doxies.
