Buckle that holds the collar closed is cheaply made. Used it to take my dog for a walk and after a couple of pulls the collar came right apart. Put it back on and soon after the same thing happened. With the collar off the dog you can simply pull the two ends apart in your hands. This product is just for show, not for use.Jenn
While I love the look of this collar, the clasp design is very unreliable. While the outer receptacle of the claps is metal, the inside is plastic. It's very week, and the collar flies off with the slightest pull. Sometimes it flies off of my Doberman when she barks with some spirit. I purchased this collar maybe 3 months ago and the buckle now pops open when my dog pulls on his collar, whether it be on his leash when he sees a squirrel or at the vet while they are just holding him into place. My dog is 55lbs and barely pulls on his leash, only when he sees small animals. Not impressed the buckle! I really liked the collar but I would prefer it if the buckle didn't break or if it was more like the belt style.Grace

I did reach out to Carhartt to inform them of this defect and they seemed concerned and offered to replace it with a better collar. They ended up not replacing it and continued to give us the run around. We also did send photos in to show how harmful it was. I loved there product but it's super disappointing they don't stand by there word. Carhartt is more expensive then most clothing so it's just frustrating I payed good money For a product that is supposed to be durable and safe. Just don't understand.Stella

To begin with; our pooch is a tall & lean 92lb Catahoula mix with a deep chest. He's a big boy, but I'd not say especially long. I mention the legnth because the XL Carhartt jacket isn't long enough… stopping 3" short of our Catahoula's tail. Despite his deep chest, the lower straps are at least 4" too long & must be overlapped with more than 2" protruding on both sides. The front strap is also a bit too long but less than 2". The Velcro holds well but we've only used the jacket a few times so far – I've read less than positive reviews about the Velcro not holding up past a year – a buckle would be nice (& we may add this). The jacket is rather stiff & when our dog turns or manuvers, the rear portion swings out a little left/right (like a hoop skirt) away from the ribcage, leaving the rump exposed, but this isn't a big deal & the stiffness will probably relax somewhat after repeated use &/or a wash. There's no opening for a harness, but an opening could be cut & nicely stitched pretty easily – we're going to do this. Having said all that we do like the jacket – it's made of tough Carhartt fabric (VERY important for adventurous doggies!), it stays in place even during vigorous rabbit chases through deep brush & offers very good protection… keeping in mind there's NO coverage underneath. We plan to get an additional "sweater" type garment to be worn as a base layer on colder days.Catahoulas are awesome
We have 2 dobermans and live in a very rural, snowy area. They play/wrestle constantly and they shredded through 4-5 coats due to their playing. We finally found the Carhartt Dog Chore coat and they've lasted 2 years now. I would've given this product 5 Stars, but there are 2 issues I can't ignore: 1) One dog is 65lbs and the Large size is a little small on her (because, as a Doberman, she has a huge ribcage). Our other dog is 85lbs and the XL is huge on him. So the fit range seems to be inconsistent. 2) The velcro lost most of its grip after the first year. Also, the stitching holding the velcro on is coming out. We need to use rubber bands to keep the coat strapped on. All that said, this is still the most functional and durable dog coat we've found.DougP
I have two dogs, a sm/md hound and a thin, barrel chested md sheppard. Sadly, I haven't actually found anything that fits my sheppard properly and thats the case here, medium is too small and large she swims in. So this review is for the hound. He is a perfect fit in a medium and I believe he weighs around 33-36lbs. The girls at the coffee stands absolutely think he is adorable, which is true. I love the jacket and so does he. but what is frustrating is the velcro straps have worn out in about 4 months of heavy use. I do believe thats partly on my end because they really are hard on jackets and harnesses. That said, I wish the jackets included two brass buttons or snaps in additon to the velcro to help prevent snags ripping the straps apart when they play and run in the forest. If you are not going to use this every day, or the dogs are not 2 and 3 years old at the dog park multiple times a week, like mine, I fully recommend this jacket. It is great, it just isn't up to real heavy, rough use for more than a few months. The teeth of the velco just start to pull out over time and then there are not enough left to hold it seccure. I will buy again, but im a little bummed about it. the jacket has a nice patina to it… there should also be an access hole for a harness loop to pass through, but there isn't. Tried the L on my 55lb dog and its WAY too small, tried the XL and its WAY too big. Super disappointed in the poor sizing. Returning the coat for the 2nd and last time. Unfortunate as its lovely but it also needs to fit an average sized dog. L would likely fit 35-42 lb dog and XL a 85 plus. No point in trying this if your dog is "average" sized. We love ruffwear! Have been using their products for 5 years already, love the designs and materials they use but mann what’s going on with the stitching ?? It sucks when the stitching starts coming loose within days/weeks of use, i got two dogs and it feels like you got a 50-50 chance that you will get a product with defective stitching, Got two collars, the “ruffwear” tag started coming loose within a few weeks of use on one of those. Got two leashes, the buckle to use around the waist broke in two days!! On one of those, the other one is still good, Got two fernie jackets, the stitching around the neck started coming loose within ONE wash on one of those, so you get the point… luckily i know how to sew and I’m able to repair the items, but it sucks to spend top dollar on dog gear only to last in good condition for a few days or weeks.Gabriela

For the number of tags I need to have on my dog, separate attachment points for tags and leash are a must. Everything on one ring would be a difficult mess. Once set, it stays set no matter how hard he pulls, no matter if the collar is dry or wet. The webbing hardly absorbs odors, and a quick wash and air dry gets rid of what little there was. My only regret is that my rough-and-tumble beast of a puppy will outgrow his medium collar in another month. Really like the collar. My dog has neck problems, so it is nice to have a strong lightweight collar to keep his ID tags on. However, one day he was scratching his neck and separated the metal on the ID tag attachment, and I replaced it with a stronger loop ID attachment ring. Looks nothing like the photo. The actual collar you receive has an extremely faded out version of the skulls…they look grayish black instead of white. I ordered this product simply for its looks, and am pleased that it looks and functions great as an indoor collar. We have another fur saver collar for training and walks that gives us more control. Our dog is large and strong and if he pulls a few times, this collar loosens, as the material is slick. I gave this color five stars because it functions exactly as I need it to. I happened to stumble across Mendota Pet in looking for a slip lead for my new addition, and ordered one. I ordered the 12" collar as she's still very much a puppy, and I have to say I was surprised in how well it appears to be made. The satin nickel is a good contrast to the purple colour and it looks very nice on my English Springer Spaniel. The quality for the price is absolutely phenomenal . A few other reviews mentioned that it was hard to buckle due to the tightness of the weave of the material, and this is absolutely the case, however, it reminds me of closing the door on a well built car, it requires some effort but that's a mark of being well built. I would absolutely buy this again, and plan on it once she out grows this or I want a change of colour. Well worth the money.John R.

I have bought this in both of the smaller sizes as my GSD has quickly outgrown them, and am getting ready to get the largest size! Love the color. The collar was a little awkward to put on at first. First of all, the chore coat is fantastic, I highly recommend that Carhartt dog jacket. It’s made of a little stiffer material, but it wears so much better. The only challenge with that one is that the Velcro fails after 3-4 months. This one, despite being more expensive is ok as long as your dog stays on leash and you don’t subject it to any abuse in the brush at all. I’ve had mine for a week and the reflective tape began peeling after the first hour. My dog is quite active and runs through the brush and this coat snagged constantly and tore. The latest is that the stitching around the collar came undone. Attaching some pictures and keep in mind that this is after a week.Steve D
